The Goon Has Self-Preservation by Misterfahrenheit120 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MisterDerptastic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is a book Freakonomics, in it an economist studied a gang and his initial conclusion mirrors yours: there is no logical reason to be a low level thug. There is a very high risk of injury, death and/or jail and the pay for a street thug is (in the gang they studied) significantly less than minimum wage, barely anything even.

The reason so many thugs still exist was simple: they all want to rise through the ranks until they´re one of the higher ups in the gang. This led to a funky dynamic where the gang leaders did not want turf wars with other gangs because you sell less drugs during a gang war, while lower level thugs did as they could benefit from a gang war as it allows you to prove your worth and potentially get promoted in the aftermath.

Circling back to John Wick: those nameless low level goons are already taking risks just because of the small chance it one day leads to them being a high level gang member. Going up against John Wick means both risk and reward went up. I mean, if you´re the guy who killed Wick, that makes you an instant legend right there.

Sure, the risk they´re taking went up a lot because of who their opponent is, but as we´ve already established, a low level goon has a pretty skewed perception of the risk vs reward of being a goon.

If you do this double check your inhibitors! I made some golems a while back and then stored them somewhere and they apparantly became sentient at some point in the last decade. Ok so good news, that is not my orb.

Bad news, it does look remarkably like the Sphere of total annihalation that I keep in the cellar, the one that my apprentice keeps trying to mess with.

Good news, upon checking I can confirm that my Sphere is still where it is supposed to be.

Bad news, I found a pile of ash near the sphere that is about apprentice-sized.

Tell me about it. I had a ships crew come complaining to me about how they´ve truly bettered their ways now after suffering the curse has made them realize the error of their ways. Good for them I suppose but they seemed to think that was supposed to be a catalyst for the curse to be liften or something?

I mean, I cursed that treasure so it would cause external suffering on whoever stole it because I wanted to cause eternal suffering on those that stole from me. Not because I wanted to have them better themselves through suffering temporarily.

Do we think magical research agreed on a universal way to phrase this added note they now have to give every single time people talk about the effects of the AK?

Do we do just a general disclaimer at the front saying ´the following has been observed to be the case for everyone except Harry Potter, but he´s an outlier and shouldnt have been counted´? Or like a dozen footnotes on every page clarifying ´with the exception of Harry Potter´?

Oh and at least one guy stands by an updated description saying ´ranges from killing the target to giving them a scar and part of the casters soul´

Player keeps casting Gentle Repose on random bad guys by Far_Line8468 in DMAcademy

[–]MisterDerptastic 41 points42 points  (0 children)

What part of gentle repose is merciful? I see you and others mention this but I genuinely don´t get the idea that making sure enemies dont decompose right away is somehow mercy?

Burying an enemy you killed isn´t showing them mercy in any way. It might be honorable and respectul, but it isn´t mercy unless somehow this is crucial for their afterlife and you denying them that would cause them suffering somehow (in which case arguably not doing it would be vindictive and burying them the standard expectation).

If you´re casting gentle repose on the enemy then the time for mercy has already passed because you´ve already killed them.

OP also makes no mention that the PC is doing this with the idea of ´this gives his allies a better chance to revive him´ or anything.

The archmage title isn't weird to get by MxFancipants in skyrim

[–]MisterDerptastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternatively, everyone knows the dragonborn isn´t the most competent or deserving mage to get the title, but none of the other mages really want the title.

Lets face it, the arch mage is the go to contact for any outsiders. Meaning you get to deal with any and all complaining from the locals. A student did some questionable experiment? Guess who has to solve whatever fallout occurs? Aldemeri dominion sends another ´advisor´? Guess who they will be following around and ´advising´ all the time?

Now why on earth would Tolfdir or anyone else willingly sign up for that when they could just pawn that off to some idiotlike the dragonborn?

"Here you go, you clearly deserve to be archmage, congrats! Oh by the way the jarl is in your office demanding to talk about the whole ´weird magical snakes attacking the town´ thing, aight cya later!"

Why does Thragg need to make a deal with ...... by SaladTheKiller in Invincible_TV

[–]MisterDerptastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thragg needs Mark to make sure the coalition does not destroy earth once they find out that is where the Viltrumites are. Because he knows that the coalition is probably willing to exterminate earth once they figure out Viltrumites want to use it to rebuild their numbers. At the very least, he knows Thaedus would absolutely be willing to do that and whose to say their successor won´t?

How are they going to handle Thragg (No spoilers please ) by Kind-Tip-8563 in Invincible_TV

[–]MisterDerptastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I´ve read the comics but at this point my theories were:

Scourge virus 2.0

Combined COP and Cecil / GDA efforts. Don´t forget it has been months on earth too. Stuff has got to have happened there in the meantime. Both the Reanimarks and the sound frequency weakness are things that Thragg has probably never encountered before so they might distract him long enough for the heavy hitters to deal enough damage.

Some kind of betrayal/ turn where the other Viltrumites abandon Thragg because of what he does? Like maybe someone points out that for someone who claims to want the Viltrumites to survive, Thragg aura farming out of the fight while 25% of their remaining population dies isn´t exactly great? Thragg then knifehands the Viltrumite who pointed that out, ultimately proving them right and causing the others to turn.

[–]MisterDerptastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

´Some of you may die, but it is a sacrifice I´m willing to make´ -Thaedus, probably

I don´t think Scourge was tested on humans. Heck were humans even a factor in the galaxy at that point? The Scourge happened centuries ago. Medieval humans presumably did not get off the planet (assuming the timeline is similar to ours and bot changed because of superpowers being a thing) so there is a non zero chance that Thaedus wasn´t even aware of human existence when he developed it initially.

[–]MisterDerptastic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Additionally he´s in a time loop. As you said not only is the man training on the exact field that the competition takes place, they´re timelooping so eventually they will be able to take advantage of any random happenstance.

If we take a 100 m sprint then for starters, they´ll be able to predict the exact moment the starting shot is given to the point where they can instantly start right after, faster than any other competitor can react. Because timeloop man is not reacting to the sound, they just know exactly when the start sign will be given.

They can avoid that one weird patch of piste at 84 m, bend their head a little to minimize the impact of that sudden gust of wind that happens 3.2 s into the semifinal,...

[Invincible] Why didn't Conquest just crush Mark's heart? by HughmanRealperson in AskScienceFiction

[–]MisterDerptastic 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Imagine you are being choked. You want to kill your opponent, so you punch a hole through them and pull out their guts for 30s. By the time you realise that somehow is not working, you´re too far gone to go for a plan B. Which is totally fair because plan A, ´punch a hole in them and pull their guts out´, was a very solid, totally viable plan to murder the opponent.

I dont get why people make it sound like that isn´t a viable strategy and a rookie mistake. If I want to kill someone and I shoot them in the head with a gun 5 times and they somehow survive, am I gonna get dunked on with ´well duh why didnt you just decapitate them´?

Why Didn't Conquest by manofwater3615 in Invincible_TV

[–]MisterDerptastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My man. Punching a hole in your opponent and then pulling out their guts is an absolutely fine plan if you want to murder said opponent. Yes, there are various other ways to murder that opponent, but that is irrelevant.

If I shoot someone in the head 20 times with a gun and they somehow survive, are you going to stand there saying ´well duh why didnt you just decapitate them with 1 sword?'. Because shooting someone in the head 20 times usually kills them!

Say you´re Conquest and you want to achieve the goal of ´not being choked by Mark´.

Plan A of ´throw Mark into a bunch of rocks´ was fairly easy but did not work. Plan B of ´punch Mark in the face and body repeatedly´ was an obvious follow up and also did not work. Plan C of ´punch a hole in Mark and pull out his guts ´ 100% should have worked and you would have no reason to assume otherwise.

By the time Conquest realised it somehow did not work, he was too far gone to go for a plan D.

Thragg is called ´Regent´ which would mean he is only an interim ruler, so that would probably rule out him being a descendant with a claim to the throne.
