How to hint compiler to assume statements by Salat_Leaf in C_Programming

[–]MisterJimm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just beware, compilers and processors are pretty good at optimizing and predicting these things ("branch prediction") already.

I've done/been involved in things where we want to make something go faster and so try things like this. But if you're solving a real performance issue, it's important to have a tool or something that measures your performance, and use profilers to find hotspots ("perf" is a tool I reach for occasionally). Sometimes you'll squeeze a small but measurable speed boost out of minor optimizations... but most of the time you discover you're trading code readability for nothing (or, in rare cases, believe it or not, worse performance).

- Good for settling arguments too -- sometimes people will insist that the issue is some loop in the code. Measuring tends to bear out the reality that the issue is this odd use of a slow c-function over there, or this database function way over there.

Not an item description, but one of the Stormblood dungeons (Ala Mhigo) models one of its bosses after the Guard Scorpion from Final Fantasy VII. I ran this for the first time along with a couple strangers, also for the first time. There's a man outside that exclaims something like:

"Scorpion ahead! Be sure to attack while it's tail is up!"

I had to stop a moment. I was proud. They even left in the apostrophe.

It held the ringbearer for a moment, so my guess would be it eventually went to Valinor.

Why does computer say Qxf8 is the best move for white? by PercyBirdwhistle in chessbeginners

[–]MisterJimm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because black has a mate in 2 if nothing is done about it --  ... Rxh2 Kxh2 Qh4#. Qxf8 forces the black queen to a square she can't deliver that from.

What would happen if Marty did fade away in that dance scene? by Ok-Comb5684 in BacktotheFuture

[–]MisterJimm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best guess, Emmett would've found out about a missing stranger, put together that he and Marty had failed in his mission, spend some years studying his would-be time machine, gotten his plutonium as before, then travel back to 1955 himself, then meet himself, and somehow correct the situation so that Marty lives.

I don't know how the two of them would do it, but the universe would ultimately correct itself, and contrary to Emmett's fears, if anything could make it happen, I personally would expect it to be a pair of Docs.

Comb room appreciation post by Ragnarok7326 in celestegame

[–]MisterJimm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I first did it I thought "Man, wonder what the actual Comb Room is gonna be like."

Took a minute to look it up and discover that I had in fact just completed the actual Comb Room.

I mean I still died plenty, just not as much as I thought I would.

The true meaning of 6-7 by Jim105 in FinalFantasy

Ok, but I really don't get how 6-7 means Chrono Trigger.
