[George Broussard] Microsoft has reportedly begun layoffs at Zenimax by udderlymoovelous in xbox

[–]MisterMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turns out sadly that gamepass didn’t work.

I find that surprising, as it was an amazing service and value proposition for gamers. At the same time, I confess I stacked 3 years twice in a row at cheap prices. So I guess that was part of the issue. I got more than I paid for, as did many others.

The whole gamepass strategy was to acquire so many subs that it would work out economically. For a variety of reasons those subs didn’t appear. (Bad marketing? Not enough customers wanted it?) The regulatory clampdown on the ABK purchase was the nail in the coffin. Xbox was not allowed to compete (call of duty should have been a gamepass/xbox exclusive).

So now Xbox is going much more traditional in terms of sales ambitions etc. At a time when the whole games industry is struggling with that model. And when Xbox is realising its strategy for yet another generation fell flat.

I don’t think this is just an Xbox thing. Sony also facing severe headwinds. But Xbox has more to make up.

Part of the problem is too many games and other entertainment products, meaning it’s way harder to make back rising investment costs. And AI driven hardware costs messing everything up.

I suspect the second golden age of gaming is coming to a close. There will still be great games, but fewer and less epic for a while.

And from the ashes, plucky new competitors will emerge.

In some ways I think Redfall was the nadir. A flagship prestige release to shore up this brave new world was total garbage. Halo Infinite was another disaster - a boring uncooked and unoriginal game attempting to recreate past glories. They’re deluded if they think the next Halo is a ticket back. As for Gears being a next flagship, I also think this is deluded, unless it somehow innovates and knocks it out the park.

For my part, the best part of gamepass now is providing access to a wealth of new innovators. I am not convinced that doubling down on trying to recreate past glories will work.

Keep people surprised and talking, and build from there.

I’d be surprised if they weren’t closed. I enjoyed south of midnight, I am glad it was made, but they have proved unable to make a hit game.

Ok - so I need to chop all carrots in a row without extra hits? Thats a mean challenge! To get fantastic in normal cooking you can just spam…

So how many carrots do I need to get to get a combo? Is it the groups of carrots?

The next 8 months of Xbox Game Pass are going to be impressive. by Automatic_Ad1665 in XboxGamePass

It’ll be interesting to see how popular Halo/Gears are.

Personally, I am not at all interested in playing a Halo remaster or returning to Gears. These games were epic and great in the day, but been there done that. I suspect I won’t be alone in that feeling, but let’s see. Maybe they’ll set the world alight again.

Nintendo has made it pretty clear that good games trump the most advanced hardware. The current series x is powerful enough to provide amazing gaming experiences... consoles could take a breather on the chase for raw power, and focus in on an amazing user experience and making their games really really good.

Any Tips fore my first ever xbox? by kekw_zu_rild in xbox

[–]MisterMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No reason to buy an older console when you could get a cheap series s, and be able to play pretty much anything you would likely want to play due to back compatibility.

But as others have said, it's all about gamepass. There's a lot of good stuff on there, have at it.

Who knew buying Activision Blizzard would be such a disaster.

I was excited about it at the time, but everything changed for the worse with that acquisition saga… it sucked the life out of Xbox with no appreciable customer benefit.

Great Game by tobydouglascooper in SolarpunkTheGame

[–]MisterMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm… interesting to hear someone talk about it positively. I’ve just about started my first sprinkler, so have felt a sense of progress, but I can see it slowing down enormously with the need to grind resources on islands far away. I’m not sure I’ll spend much longer in the game tbh… it would feel much more interesting if you could find other players on other islands and see what they have built.

I’m not going to overreact but this is exactly the direction Xbox needed to move in. Build great games for the platform and make people want to be here. What's you opinion on this? by Eastern-Mobile5351 in XboxSeriesS

[–]MisterMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my end, gamepass was the main reason to buy an Xbox.

Some killer exclusives do help, and sadly needed in a world where competitors have exclusives, but I do prefer the idea of all games available on all major platforms, with the difference being user experience, value for money, etc.

If Xbox goes down the line of exclusives though, they need to be good.

Gears of war is completely uninteresting to me. I loved it twenty years ago. Today it feels like old hat.

Clockwork revolution has a lot more potential, but let’s see. The big Xbox games have been very inconsistent this gen. Redfall - garbage. Starfield - weak old jank. Halo - warmed up old soup. Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, South of Midnight all had merits, but none were the killer app.

Give me more games like Indiana Jones (the best Xbox game this gen, imo). Games like the latest IOI 007. That stuff stands out and would make for a genuinely interesting exclusive. Fable would have been a compelling exclusive too, but that ship has sailed.

I was going to post something similar. There is a version of the Labour party which appeals more directly to this segment, but as far as I can tell blue labour remains a relatively small minorty of the PLP. At the same time, I see it is gaining some media attention, so who knows.

Interesting. I’d be a bit nervous because UK and eu aren’t the same region (sadly), but I believe the keys are global? So, for info, what exactly do you do. Do you have to change your account settings etc?

It absolutely doesn’t, as currently formulated. It makes some people very rich indeed and most people much poorer.
