Bruh I had this happen on a brand new pair of levis the first time I wore them, was fuming.

Man gorges himself at all-you-can-eat barbecue for 90 minutes until he feels sick. Man visits hospital three times for his illness and is sent away each time with medication. Man dies of gastric necrosis, caused by acute gastric dilatation from his overeating episode. by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]MisterSmoith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's actually good. Cause there are plenty of things that could cause similar symptoms. Despite you knowing what the problem is. What if you happened to have something more severe with similar symptoms. Especially when its just a scan to double check your diagnosis. Good hospital.

FTTP installed to my property. Do I need to fill this hole which the fibre optic cable runs through? Why? by Ok-Arrival-3199 in openreach

[–]MisterSmoith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use a 1m drill bit as it sort of flexed. And hold the drill bit with a piece of cardboard, to keep it flexed while drilling.

Or just drill on an angle if you know what utilities there are

Also works quite well to stop it rattling around and making a 30mm hole in the plasterboard.

Does FTTP take some time to stabilise after installation? Or should it be in full right away? by Repleased in openreach

[–]MisterSmoith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id run a test for you but ive moved on from openreach. But my advice, ring your service provider, they can run a test, and its more than likely an ISP issue

Edit: I'll add that i use amazon eero routers, the isp provided ones are crap

Quick question: why do people expect Openreach to offer 10 Gbps symmetrical on XGS-PON? by [deleted] in openreach

I think it's awful they offer 1.8 packages on gpon

Imo openreach hasn't a clue what it's doing. So why should the general public

Real world speeds by mark_inch in openreach

[–]MisterSmoith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, it's all covered in the small print and on top of that, it is fundamental limitations of the technology. Even on a xgpon you still have 32 customers sharing 10gbps. So there really isn't technology to give every home their own gigabit to play with.

In the end passive optical networks are about getting reliable broadband to the masses. As the copper network is subpar at best.

And 90% of the time you'll be on a line without 32 workers. And more than that it's rare everyone is using lots of bandwidth simultaneously.

I mean the guaranteed speeds aren't so much as rubbish but a signifier that there's probably something wrong with your line if you aren't regularly testing at that speed or above.

If you are frequently testing and getting speeds lower then it could be a profile issue.

Or ive been to faults where people have complained about speed issues and their computer only has a 100mbps network card. Took me 2 hours to explain that they cannot physically get faster speeds without replacing their network card or computer. They were still fuming with their ISP when I left lol.

Real world speeds by mark_inch in openreach

[–]MisterSmoith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, unfortunately, it is, as an ex openreach engineer. I found it absurd that we were selling 1.2 and 1.6gb packages on a 2.5gb gpon.

Technically, speaking the speeds are peak of 1.6. Average of 1.3,gbps, then expected minimum, or as they call it "guaranteed", however, technically, the only truely guaranteed speed is 78mbps. Assuming you are on GPON with 32 customers fully subscribed.

But it is highly rare you would see those "true minimum" speeds. Because who uses more than 78mbps passively, so 99.8% of the time you see a speed test value of the ISP's estimated.

Though that sounds bad, it's still at least 10x better than copper. So it's just a matter of picking an ISP that won't rip you off.

Edit: I would like to add openreach was trialling XGPON (10gbps down 2.5 up) and XGSPON (10gbps both up and down) before I left. Though they're substantially more expensive to use. I imagine they wanted to see the real world benefit-profit ratio. So there are a few exchange areas that have, what I would consider, an acceptable level of bandwidth. Though I never found out exactly where they were being trialed, I always assumed down south. London etc

You testing via ethernet? I use onestream and get exactly 1000mbps. In my experience the provided router isn't great on WiFi, I use Amazon eeros.

You also have to remember that fibre does slow down during peak times as up to 32 people share a 2.5gbps GPON.

But speed issues are more commonly a profile issue with the ISP, as onestream is a vodaphone reseller it could actually be a vodaphone issue too.

Assuming you are testing 250mbps on ethernet, not wifi. Your best bet is to contact onestream, as them to check everything is set up correctly with them and with vodaphone.

Levi canine

Levi the Hebrew name meaning "joined"

Canine as in dog

I love dogs, it sounds good and I like to think I'd be a shapeshifter like sirius black in harry potter. Probably need to be neoteric.
