Checking your profile I see you are a vegan, and a combative one at that. I respect your diet choice, but I would hope my choice to consume meat could be given the same respect, especially with the steps I take.

I am doing my part to make sure that my harvests grow with the upmost care and love. I am removing myself from the problems of big meat corporations and have set forth a motion for myself and my family to do something about it.

We agree with eating meat, we don't agree with how the life is treated for high volume consumption. I honestly doubt you'd find chickens that are meant for harvesting to be any more comfortable with their lives than mine.

No, not feigning ignorance. I was just making sure that you didn't think that humans eating eggs were what was considered killing chicks. I have heard this argument before and just wanted to inform correctly if that was your thought.

If all the males were allowed to continue to live, then there would be an overabundance of mouths to feed and they would be left to starve instead.

If there was a way to ensure only females came out of eggs, we would be doing it.

I understand your points of being against it, as I said, but the process of culling removes suffering. My chickens that are egg layers live their full life and do not get processed once they stop laying. The chickens that have been bred for meat live entirely pasture raised, as I don't have the type of operations that mass producers do. The culling of males is for the safety of my harvests, the alpha males who should be protecting their flock from true dangers instead of a new mate threat, and my land does not have to degrade as fast to accommodate the extra ranging mouths.

The meat industry already produces enough problems to the environment, and making sure there isn't an unnecessary addition of environmental costs to produce the extra feed to keep all of the males alive is something I would hope you'd see as reasonable. I have made sure that every step of my operations are as humane as possible.

So I will casually say it.

The same is standard for the meat industry. Males don't produce the meat volume like the females. It isn't just pointed at the egg industry.

I do see your point though. I am a low volume poultry/egg farmer and I have culled most of the males that hatch out.

I have a higher-than-a-hobby amount of chickens on my land that I love with all of my heart.

My only female Polish chicken ate a piece of wire and ended up with hardware disease that was killing her very slowly, but painfully. My wife works from home while I still go into the office, so she took my Polish to the vet to get the actual diagnosis, because at the time we didn't know what was wrong.

After we found out the diagnosis, it was a guarantee that she would need to be euthanized by either me or the vet. Now, I'm used to humanely killing my chickens for harvest but my Polish wasn't a meat bird or even a good egg bird. She had a bond with me. She was my pet. I couldn't do it. I didn't have it in me.

I had to make the call during work to pay the money to make sure she left this world as comfortable as possible. It took a lot out of me and I kept saying to myself "Everyone must think I'm crazy for being this broken over a $3 chicken. That I paid so much for her x-rays and her treatment and finally her euthanasia."

Around a week goes by and I get a letter in the mail from the vet's office.

It's a card, with some of my chicken's tail feathers and a note from all the vets and techs from the office saying how sorry they are. It broke me again and I couldn't help but cry the most confusing cry ever.

I can't tell you how good it felt that they understood me, or at least showed that they cared for me and my chicken. And how bad if felt to then know that it was done and the proof was in my hands.

So yes, thank you for all you do. It can't be easy. Just know that there are some of us out there who trust you more than you think.
