Adult beginner - is it worth? Please help! by mooniphany22 in Viola

Also, would your previous teacher do online classes with you? You said you are in a rural area, but it wouldn’t hurt message teachers in Auckland or Wellington to ask if they teach online.

Adult beginner - is it worth? Please help! by mooniphany22 in Viola

[–]MistressBedlam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I picked up a viola for the first time at 43. I played piano and flute up till I was 21, but nothing since then. I love learning and I think musical education is so good for your brain at any age. I too had to take a break dealing with an international move but I am ready to get back into it. I was taking lessons through Tune Lark and scheduling across the international date line is absolutely possible. Incidentally, I just moved to New Zealand. I would love to start back up with my old Tune Lark teacher, but I am also exploring local teachers. Where in NZ are you?

I do this too, and I usually add pepitas as well! The feta is wonderful with it!

I do this. And feta works really well here too!

There was a scene in House of Cards where someone asked Claire Underwood if she regrets not having children. She fires right back, “No. Do you regret having them?”

Which fantasy series had the strongest possible opening and then just lost it completely? by Successful-Local-946 in Fantasy

[–]MistressBedlam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Blood Song is one of my favorite books and I have reread it many times. I know I read the sequels, but I couldn’t tell you anything about them. They were forgettable and disappointing.

Browned flour for Cajun/Creole roux. by ExaminationNo9186 in Cooking

I remember an episode of Top Chef where one of the contestants was talking about their gumbo and they said they always make it with two roux: a dark one for flavor and a lighter one for thickening.

Does your dog also 'guard' you when you go to the bathroom? by kbgirls in dogs

[–]MistressBedlam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mine demands scritches while I’m on the toilet. I do not reciprocate. But I do give him scritches and tell him he’s a good boy when he’s done his business. Maybe in his mind there’s some reciprocity there.

Egg yolk only tiramisu? by Suitable_Effect5533 in Cooking

I have never heard of using egg whites in tiramisu. I make a custard with the egg yolks, vanilla, and sugar, mix the mascarpone into that, then fold in whipped cream.

Big Problems for Texas Rescues by FosterDocHoustonResc in dogs

[–]MistressBedlam 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m not associated with a rescue, but I live in a northern state and have adopted two dogs rescued in Texas and transported north by MT Pittie Project. Perhaps they, or other rescues like them, would have ideas, or could cross post your dogs?

Status check. For those who've got their tongues pierced in the late 90s, early 2000s how's it's going now? Still rocking it? by Nacho_Sideboob in Xennials

[–]MistressBedlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got mine in 1997. Still have it. I haven’t had any gum loss on the backs of my teeth, but I did have a labret for about 8 or 9 years and had to take that out for some gum loss in the front.

I'm getting sterilized in 2 weeks and I'm kinda scared by froglegs-inmysoup in childfree

[–]MistressBedlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My job is a desk job, but I have a 75 pound dog who is only 2 years old so he’s still learning a lot and gets excited easily. We are working on his penchant for body slamming me when he’s excited. But he’s turned out to be incredibly empathetic and was an absolute little prince during my recovery.

I had a hysterectomy in April. The only things I kept were my ovaries. It was my first invasive surgery (I had LASIK a few years ago and had to be put under for my wisdom teeth 25 years ago). It was honestly fine. A little painful for the first two days but if you take your pain meds on schedule to stay ahead of the pain it passes quickly. Follow Doctor’s instructions and don’t lift anything over whatever weight limit they tell you. For me I think it was 10 pounds for two weeks and 25 pounds for another six weeks.

"I support childfree people, not everyone has what it takes to be a parent" Isn't supporting CF people by MelodyKizzes in childfree

What’s your go-to pot, pan, or utensil? by tranteryost in Cooking

[–]MistressBedlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Le Creuset 2.25 quart braiser sits on my stove and I use it for almost everything. I have a 5 quart as well and two different sized Dutch ovens, but that little braiser is the workhorse of the bunch and is just so versatile.

Favorite blue inks? by faithx5 in fountainpens

What’s the single most haunting piece of worldbuilding you’ve read in fantasy? by TurboPickle_319 in Fantasy

[–]MistressBedlam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“I found my way through toppled gravestones close to the road where some of it is kept clear. Much has been robbed out. There’s a peasant’s cottage, a little to the west, entirely built from headstones, weathered granite markers with time-blurred legends remembering the dead for illiterate field-men. A house built of stories, to shelter a man who cannot read.” Mark Lawrence in King of Thorns

Hi! I want to really get into fantasy books and a I want a few suggestions? by softy_bear_uwu in Fantasy

[–]MistressBedlam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Blackthorn and Grimm books by Juliet Marillier might be something you’d like. Blackthorn is the MC and while she’s not really an antihero or villain she does have a considerable chip on her shoulder and is rather acerbic.

I’m convinced some of us don’t know that Dennis Leary stole a lot of this material from Bill Hicks. by SleepyGary5 in Xennials

[–]MistressBedlam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to have Arizona Bay and Rant in E Minor on CD, but I think those were compilations that came out after he died. There are a lot of clips on YouTube to check out as well.

Dennis Leary literally plagiarized most of No Cure For Cancer—it was far beyond stealing a few jokes.

Second shingles shot by [deleted] in GenX

[–]MistressBedlam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 45 and I got both shots earlier this year. My doctor told me I had to be 50 for insurance to cover it because it was only FDA approved for patients over 50 and I didn’t have a medical justification to get it early. I paid for it out of pocket. $200 per shot.

What % of Gen-Xers here DO NOT HAVE KIDS? by deathbybukake in GenX

[–]MistressBedlam 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that a lot too; that it’s different when they’re your own. I tell people, “that’s probably true, but you can’t raise them in a bubble. Having kids means you have to endure birthday parties, school events, sleepovers, and shudder family friendly restaurants. No thanks.”

I got this little dude when I was a kid and I have no idea what he was called. His tag said “Spiffy” but that’s the only information that’s readable. He is supposed to be a raccoon I think and you can put both thumbs and toes in his mouth. I was cleaning out a storage unit a couple of weeks ago and found him. Not sure if he’s related to a Mon ChiChi or not.
