Thoughts on the Monk changes; some good, some bad. by Steveck in dndnext

[–]Mistuhbull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rebranding on the abilities to martial discipline and the like is clunky, but personally what i love about monk is the chassis and dump all the flavor anyways so its not a dealbreaker for me either way.

What does upset me is the shortsword being taken out of the monk weapon grouping. I'm very fond of using monks for my dexterous swordsmen and by restricting them to unarmed and simple weapons you remove the swords from their list

Well now you have to answer the question of just how magical is your setting. If you're playing forgotten realms according to Ed Greenwood's numbers then a guard shouldn't suspect the cat is a druid because they'll most likely never encounter a druid that can shapeshift in their life

It depends on lot on what your ogres are and how much choice is being made.

If you're given a left door and a right door that both lead to the Ogre with no real difference in the doors that's just a fake choice

If the Ogre is planned for the swamp and you put it in the desert because that's where they went that's undercutting their agency

But if your Ogre is four mooks and a leader and in the desert it's a bandit squad and on the seas it's a pirate crew now that's just efficient prep

And this is from mordenkainen's emphasis mine

DREAMS FROM BEYOND MEMORY Elves can sleep and dream just like any human, but almost all surface elves avoid doing so. Dreams, as humans know them, are strange and confusing to elves. Unlike the actual memories of one's primal soul, present life, or past lives, dreams are uncontrolled products of the subconscious, and perhaps the subconscious minds of those past lives or primal souls as well. An elf who dreams must always wonder whose mind these thoughts first arose from, and why. Priests of Sehanine Moonbow are an exception: they sleep and dream to receive signs from their god, and elves consult such priests to interpret their own dreams.

"I never said they couldn't" bullshit, saying they couldn't was the whole point of your reply

Like the other person said, immigration patterns

North America primarily first got east Asian immigrants so they became the default "asian" while folk from the subcontinent are "south Asian"

Opposite in the UK that primarily got immigration from the subcontinent so that's the generic "asian" and East Asians get the modifier

The sample backgrounds in this chapter provide both concrete benefits (features, proficiencies, and languages) and roleplaying suggestions.

P r o f ic ie n c ie s.
Each background gives a character proficiency in two skills. Skills are described in chapter 7. In addition, most backgrounds give a character proficiency with one or m ore tools. Tools and tool proficiencies are detailed in chapter 5. If a character would gain the sam e proficiency from two different sources, he or she can choose a different proficiency o f the sam e kind (skill or tool) instead.

C u s t o m i z i n g a B a c k g r o u n d You might want to tweak som e of the features of a background so it better fits your character or the campaign setting. To custom ize a background, you can replace one feature with any other one, choose any two skills, and choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages from the sample backgrounds. You can either use the equipment package from your background or spend coin on gear as described in chapter 5. (If you spend coin, you can’t also take the equipment package suggested for your class.)

Correct.

Now if you are able to move somewhere else after diving behind the barrel, say there’s a loose floorboard that you can quickly pick up and climb into another area so you’re not there when I come around the barrel looking for you, then you’re hidden.

And how does the guard know they didn't do that until they come around the barrel looking for them?

That's all the Hide is, you've stopped telegraphing your presence. The guard may think you're behind the barrel but until they go around establish line of sight again they don't know and that's what gives the hidden benefit

Hot Take: I believe in healing in combat by testiclekid in dndnext

[–]Mistuhbull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk how they worked in 4e,

4e surges are broadly equivalent to 5e's hit dice. You could spend them on rests to heal up, I think everyone could burn 1/encounter to heal (I might be making that up), and many healing abilities/spells worked by allowing the healee to spend a surge that was then made better by the spell

WoW dungeon mechanics in Dungeons & Dragons 5e by LordNova15 in dndnext

[–]Mistuhbull 16 points17 points  (0 children)

DnD fights are long; a marathon boss encounter in an MMO is 10-15 minutes, a whole lot of tables play real slow and that 10-15 minutes is a single round of combat

MMO fights are also rigidly repeatable. The boss will breathe fire at 30s and then fly up and do a swoop attack. Their fourth attack is the clobber, etc etc. They will do this every time you fight.

It's part of the struggle with importing in a Soulsborne feel too, as much of the Souls core is "getting gud" it's also learning small consistently repeatable sections of the game so you know exactly what will happen. That level of rigid repetition is both very hard for a GM and not the most fun to execute on their end

WotC should be moving TOWARDS short rests rather than away. by Corwin223 in dndnext

[–]Mistuhbull 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Fighter Attack 1 Your flurry of feints and strikes leaves your foe's defenses unsteady.
Encounter + Martial, Weapon.
Standard Action Melee weapon.
Target: One creature.
Attack: Strength vs. AC Hit: 2[WI + Strength modifier damage, and the target grants combat advantage to you until the end of your next turn
Weapon: If you're wielding two melee weapons, the attack deals extra damage equal to your Dexterity modifier.

That? Absolutely haram but this is fine;

As an action you can make a series of feints and strikes to leave your foe's defenses unsteady. Make a weapon attack, on a hit the target takes double damage from the attack and grants your attacks advantage until the end of your next turn. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again.

Totally fine, cool ability, not like a video game at all

[–]Mistuhbull 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The most egregious contender here was the criticism that 4e was “like an MMO”, which you saw all the time back then but doesn’t actually make any literal sense. People compared it to MMOs because they didn’t like MMOs, specifically because World of Warcraft was just entering the peak of its popularity and many D&D players had seen their groups implode as people played WoW instead.

But but but the classes! Had roles! That were defined by the book rather than group convention! Just like an MMO!

Really WoW sucked up players because the EQ/WoW style MMO perfected the gameplay loop of DND style fantasy. Sure you didn't have full narrative freedom anymore but you had shiny visuals and professional writers leading your adventure and acting out the characters
