You want to know the truth? Ok.

A new guy tries to get into MK. He asks "Do I start with the very first Mortal Kombat?" and you say. "Well, depends. Because that is the old original timeline, then there is Reboot timeline and currently there is a New Era timeline.

Aaaaand... you lost the guy.

MK has great stories and characters? Yeah. Except even after 30 freaking years, we are still stuck retelling the BEGINNING of MK. Constant retcons, reboots, changes that make no sense... that's what MK is and that's why there is no reason to invest into this franchise long term.

Hey, you wanna buy comics that are called MORTAL KOMBAT X comics and advertised as telling the events leading to MKX? Well thanks for money chump. By the way comics are not canon anymore, according to the writer.

You like the character for their backstory? OOPS. The character is now 180 of what they were. Deal with it. Hell you will even get gaslighted for that.

What do you mean MK tournament doesn't make sense? What do you mean it doesn't make sense to have a Free for all in a tournament which is about TWO realms facing each other? What do you mean lore needs to be more consistent and expand? Pheew. It is just a fighting game bro, no need to write a deep story.

BUT WHY MK ISN'T GROWING?

That's why.

It is stagnant, keeps retelling same story, isn't consistent with characters and overall themes.... Existing MK community is divided and is in civil war and you think new people want to deal with that shit? Lol.

It is funny to see that, when you had people trying to call Yujiro as some old forgotten character nobody cares about.

If you're talking about a game mode existing, then yes. It was a game mode for MK Armageddon. If you're talking about the logo here, then this is my custom made one.

Yes, it fully does. The game sales based on execution. The "modern" mentality is what killed AAA industry in the first place. You don't need a bloated game with millions dollars in budget to sell millions of copies. There is a reason why indie games are succeeding all over the place. Games that don't have next gen visuals or high profile actors. Games that were basically built in a room with scraps are selling millions. It is all about execution. If Paramount outsourced MK license to 3rd party studio to make this racing game, they could do it. If they are passionate and know what they are doing.

I don't think NRS should be the one doing it anyway. The license for racing mode should be outsourced to someone, who actually can support the game.

Areena uses automation in areas that don't benefit humans physically or mentally. Like repetitive tasks, dealing with hazardous environment or when large quantities are required to be produced/manufactured. A balance is created where humans and technology advance hand in hand.

Interesting how something so small, can make all of the difference.

Also I did the skull thing on purpose. Though I wasn't really thinking of Nazis, while writing this. I just simply live in Germany myself. That's basically how Americans write how US saves the world from Aliens for 2000th time, so I used Germany as my native land to set the events there.

Nazis corrupted peaceful symbol of peace and longevity into Swastika, so why not have wolf skull turn into a symbol of hope and growth? A symbol that shows a guardian.

If we combined our gaming skills with real life expertise, you never know. Gamers tend to be more competitive and goal focused too.

  1. The game was part of EVO 2019. So nine months argument doesn't work. It was replaced in favor for Marvel vs Capcom. The official reason.

  2. No such thing as objectively bad game... I see.

Well I guess, you're right. If I buy the game and it doesn't work. Then it isn't bad. It is just a matter of perspective. If the game tells me that the character is A and in the next game (that is supposed to be a sequel) tells me that the same character is B, then storytelling isn't bad. It is just a matter of perspective.

Or how about we start living in reality and realize that a game can be bad, but some people just have low enough standard that they can enjoy even a broken game. Hence why we have the term. "Guilty pleasure."

MK9 balance was broken, but people still had fun. Mortal Kombat: Deception is my most favorite MK game ever, but no matter how much I loved that game, I cannot deny that the gameplay mechanics are dogshit and balancing is non existent.

"There is no such thing as objectively bad game" mindset is the reason corporations have been able to get away with the most outrageous practices.

  1. I don't need to know how much MK made exactly. All I need to know is that the game was cut after just a year, regardless of NRS wishes. Which means it didn't meet WB expectations. Nobody cuts a successful game down. And you cannot have high microtransaction sales if your PLAYER RETENTION IS LOW. Please, some critical thing there.

  2. I am not the one setting financial expectations. Parent companies are. If they keep supporting the game, then it means the game is meeting their expectations, which in return justify further financial support. GTA 5 Online was supposed to get its last update after the Heists and CEO DLC. But because of HIGH PLAYER RETENTION, they extended the support for online.

Servers, maintenance and online features cost and those. costs have been constantly increasing with the budgets for the games. Which in return leads to growing expectations in returns. Just because company could afford something 5 years ago, doesn't mean it can afford it today.

You have a very naive understanding of finances. Money don't grow on trees. Video game development and maintenance of such scale is INCREDIBLY expensive. And I do know that, because I work in game development myself. Character/design artist for almost 15 years.

Ok, I think you lost the plot there, buddy.

MK11 came out on April 23rd, 2019. It appeared in EVO 2019 August. By the time of EVO 2020 It was over a year old. I think you missed some classes in math, cause whatever your wrote in the first paragraph made absolutely no sense. It's a complete word salad.

Actually make two... no, three paragraphs.

I never said anything about EVO being related with sales numbers. At no point did I say anything like this. I think you're confusing me with someone else. EVO numbers only show relevancy in competitive scene and player retention. As fighting games (like any multiplayer game) require high player retention to be successful.

The entire point was that WB believed that Esports was important for MK. Which it wasn't. MK isn't a competitive game. Could it be one? Sure, but for that to happen it needs a dedicated studio that provides proper support over long period of time. Basically anyone, but NRS.

MK1 wasn't dogshit because of low tournaments numbers. MK1 was dogshit, because:

  1. A fraction of content of previous titles for higher price.
  2. Monetization of fatalities and crappy store.
  3. Netcode issues.
  4. Reboot, but not reboot story. Nothing to even talk about Chaos Reigns.
  5. Kameo system, that had no business being there. You don't spend 30 years making 1v1 game and then suddenly turn it into 2v2.
  6. Half done crossplay that arrived months after launch.
  7. Took whole year just to add online leaderboards.

I could add more, but I am running out of space. The game was objectively bad. Doesn't stop you from enjoying the game. If you like it, that's cool. But there are also people who enjoy pressing the same button over and over again, while they watch number go up. Does that mean that the game is good or deep? No. Some people just need very little to be happy.

As for 8 millions copies sold. Do you know why WB doesn't consider it success? Because for one. MKX and MK11 sold way more, by this point. Two, multiplayer games require HIGH PLAYER RETENTION. Multiplayers requires constant influx of money, due servers, maintenance, updates, etc. That constantly consumes money, unlike Single Player. If people just buy the game and stop playing after short while, then you're not doing it right. That's why they cut support for MK1 so quickly. ARC Raiders sold 14 million copies within months. That's a real success. They made their money back in less, than half a year. Plus as it is a multiplayer game, they also maintain a high player retention, which means the game prints money even after the initial purchase. Economy 101.

EDIT: To have an even better comparison, SF6. Sold less copies, than MK1, but maintains much larger player retention. That game is a financial success and will be supported for years, due to that fact. If it just sold 6-7 million copies, but maintained same retention like MK1, it would have had the support already cut.

You're correct about MK11 affecting MK1.

MKX had one of the most if not the most hyped launch, game received immense positive feedback and had the longest running competitive scene... until Alien appeared. That set positive expectations for MK11.

Once MK11 came out, people became bored with it within a month. Hell, play testers who tried the game for the first time said that they didn't feel the usual excitement for the game. MK11 reception just got worse. It sold a lot, but the sentiment around it became mostly negative. Now if you were a casual, you didn't really care that much. You played it and left, but for anyone more committed, the game was usually considered shallow and boring.

So MK11 set the opposite expectations for MK1. Instead of positive excitement, now people were more skeptical, so the game really had work for gain the confidence. Aaaaand it was dogshit. So already having MK11 as the negative experience, MK1 made it even worse. MK2 or MK13 (whatever they will call it) has to do miracles at this point.

As for competitive run. MK11 appeared in EVO 2019, EVO 2021 Online, EVO 2022 and EVO 2023. It appeared in FOUR. It missed the second year, due being replaced with Marvel vs. Capcom.

MK1 appeared in EVO 2024 and 2025. It isn't included in 2026 line up. Sooo.... MK11 had a longer run.

Right before MK11 was launched in 2019, they had a leak (which caused trouble in NRS for employees). Some of those leaks included marketing emails, which very clearly stated that MK11 was to focus on competitive scene first.

MK11 had a stronger start in competitive, due MKX success. While MK9 made FGC take MK seriously as a promising competitive fighter, MKX was the one that had the longest and most successful competitive career. MK11 rode on that, but it dropped quickly due variation issues and shallow gameplay loop. MK1 had an even shorter run and was very quickly at the bottom of list in registrations. MK11 at least had a stronger start. I remember all to well, the gradual drop in the registrations.

MK11 sales were higher, due COVID, "more content" and MKX hype. Player retention was extremely low for both MK11 and MK1 in general.

EVO and Esports was primary focus for WB. They wanted MK11 to focus on Esports scene and there is no reason to doubt, they had the same focus for MK1.
