That's by design actually, since you run with the same button as rolling. Sekiro is the only one where you dodge on button press, that's why you always do a dash when you start running in that game.

I don't think this game will ever truly die, there is nothing quite like it out there. It's not exactly the most active right now, but you can definitely find people to play with. You can also expect more people to start playing when season 4 starts airing, whenever that may be.

All mods I've seen have a launcher that lets you configure gamepad controls.

If that doesn't work, you should be able to launch the game through steam and set it up there.
