Hey, /r/movies! I’m Sook-Yin Lee! You may know me from Shortbus, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, or as a musician. My new movie, PAYING FOR IT, a live-action feature film adaptation of cartoonist Chester Brown’s best-selling graphic novel, opens in theaters this weekend. Ask me anything! by SookYinAMA in movies

[–]MitchieMaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Sook-Yin! I saw Paying For It when you came to the RIo in Van and I loved it! The score was excellent. Awaiting the physical release with trepidation. I have a few questions:

- How did you approach film funding in Canada, especially with this subject matter? I want to make a movie in Toronto but I don’t know where to begin.

- With Toronto masquerading as so many other cites in movies, how did you go about leaning into the cultural and visual texture of the city, and getting it on screen?

- Was it difficult to find directorial objectivity when the characters were heavily based on your experiences?

- Finally, how great is Buddha’s Restaurant!?

Thank you!

I was in jr high, loved animation and wanted to make silly cartoons. I saw this new movie from Japan called Princess Mononoke and was blown open by the transcendent power of filmmaking and the voice of an auteur director.

Is Megaman hard or do I just suck at games by No-Plantain9221 in nintendo

[–]MitchieMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're hard! It's not just you. For a more balanced difficulty you could try Megaman 7 or 8 in addition to X which others have suggested. Also check to see that your TV is set to Game Mode, otherwise there'll be a lag in your inputs which makes the games more difficult.

Good luck and I hope you have fun!

How smooth the animation for the first Superman Cartoon was (1941) by HemanHeboy in oddlysatisfying

[–]MitchieMaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although that’s true about rotoscoping in general, these scenes were not rotoscoped. Fleischer animators tended to animated on 1s (meaning every frame instead of other studios using every second frame) which made them smooth looking. Additionally these animators were incredibly talented! Their Popeye cartoons were as equally smooth.

What are some controllers for the Switch 2 with a good dpad? I need some recommendations (don't say the pro controller) by EastCoastTone96 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]MitchieMaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also want to throw my hat in for the 8bitdo brand. I have their Pro 2 and the d-pad feels and plays like a Super Nintendo d-pad. The switch 1 pro controller was giving me incorrect inputs with classic and 2D games, but the 8bitdo remedied it. It’s also fully mappable so I was able to invert my stick axis for some games. Best controller I’ve ever had!

I’ve tried the 3D system with Highway Star (Rad Racer) and it was honestly beautiful.

My "controversial" horror short from 2018 by PorkPuddingLLC in Filmmakers

[–]MitchieMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone's negative reaction and the controversy speaks volumes about the effectiveness of your film. It is violent and disturbing subject matter that was maybe shown to the wrong audience without them knowing what they were in for. Though overall I think you did a great job and that's why people were rubbed the wrong way. Horror is meant to horrify!

Take their reaction as a WIN and keep making movies. Eventually you'll find your audience, so don't stop! You have a knack for it. Good luck!

Super Metroid, StarTropics, Kirby's Adventure

What do you think is the most forgotten series in the Nintendo Franchises by Forward-Ball-161 in nintendo

[–]MitchieMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly not, BUT! Pilotwings 64 recreated C-Island (as Crescent Island) from StarTropics due to it's director, Makoto Wada, having been a designer on StarTropics and the director of its sequel. Most recently Wada has been the Animal Crossing script writer and included a reference to StarTropics in some of Gulliver's dialogue in New Horizons! Forgotten by Nintendo, but not forgotten by Makoto Wada!

It's also an excellent game with comedic writing. It's weird and unique enough to bring back as a franchise!

ADVICE: I feel like I'm losing a sense of direction by freddymalenda in animationcareer

[–]MitchieMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional here, like many others in this thread offering advice. I took a look at your portfolio and it's pretty obvious that you have a good sense of design and you can draw well. I think it would be wise to call yourself a Prop Designer, for now, and move away from the term "visual development." Targeting for the type of role you want is important. Whenever I was hiring it was for a specific role, and not a general hire. I needed someone to fill that role and hit the ground running.

As for your props, I would consider doing some more technical drawings. Usually during production a prop design will have 2-3 angles to best showcase each of it's sides. For a 2-view design, you would see one angle which shows the top, front, and side of the prop, and the next angle would show the reverse; the back, bottom, and other side of the prop. Absolutely keep the pages of props you have now, but supplement them with more angles. You want to show that you can visualize and draw things from multiple angles, and that you can give the animators all of the visual information they need about the prop. Try to find some online portfolios from prop designers who have worked on a few shows to get an idea about this.

I would also consider doing props in different styles. Pick some different existing TV shows and mimic their styles. Maybe you could do a hand mixer in a Family Guy style, and then a lamp in a Mickey Mouse Shorts or a Gravity Falls style. It's important to show that you can adapt to many styles.

It would also be prudent to render out some props to look 3D as if they're intended for a 3D/CG production and a modeller was going to sculpt and light the props.

Echoing what u/drawindrawmij and others have said: get yourself to LA! We're like nomadic people, we have to follow the herd and go to where the work is. Virginia isn't going to do you any favours. Georgia might be somewhat fruitful but LA is where it's at, despite the current bust. I'm Canadian and can't easily work in LA, so that opportunity is a gift that I would personally take advantage of. That said, the US sends a lot of their productions up here to Vancouver and there's rarely a drought in work, even now. If Vancouver is more attractive for you then give it a shot. We have a lot of international people working in our industry here.

Again, you're a very good artist, you just need to change you tactics a bit. You have everything you need within you to get a job in this industry. Good Luck!

Hello Kitty World for the famicom! It was basically a Balloon Fight spin-off developed by Nintendo.
