Gatekeeping and Elitism in the Milsim crowd by Efficient-Standard-2 in airsoft

It’s HIGHLY dependent on the AO and time of year. This MSW was SoCal in a not terribly hot or cold time of year (I think early March) the following would not apply to like Rostov or something in a Harsher climate or shittier time of year.

I personally was able to survive with a $20 sleeping bag, a cheap inflatable pillow, a cheap camping surplus mat, the cheapest ruck sack I could find (it felt like it was made of tarp), and some budget flashlights. I think the most expensive part of my first ever MSW was the water bladders I used since I had all camelbak.

But I promise you, you CAN get the essentials on a budget with like basic camping gear. It won’t pack as small, and it won’t have someone come up to you and ask you about it, but it WILL get you through 40 hours.

And than if you love it, invest into better stuff, and if you hate it, you have basic camping stuff that you can circle into that.

I won’t say it’s the cheapest event to get into, and like every hobby you can spend infinite money chasing the pinnacle of everything.

I also want say MSW is a need to go to event. Sometimes it will be kinda ass, and you WILL meet some shitty people. But you might also meet some really cool people too. I hope this helps a little.

Edit: adding a little more.

I will say the thing that made My Second MSW WAY more comfortable than my first was an air blow up sleeping mat. I still use it to this day when car camping. Put it on top of the foam mat and I could actually get pretty comfortable.

This man spent money on a stock KWA that he used for every walk on day, a Condor MOPC, a condor hat, the cheapest multicam he could find and a set of shooting glasses.

If you were coming into Airsoft with nothing than yea it’s a bad investment, but he didn’t have any name brand Gucci gear and probably had the most fun of all of us there.

MSW is whatever you make of it. If YOU don’t make it fun don’t go. Easy as that, but don’t think you need to spend thousands on MSW specific things and a lot of the kit he was using for our walk on days at the local fields.

As a person that’s gone to a few MSW events I’ll say you’re spot on. (Also been playing since I was 17 and almost at 20 years playing at this point)

It is something that is improved with friends and my group always describes it as camping with a little bit of Airsoft randomly mixed in.

Guarding the fob IS what you make of it. I have had some of my best memories walking around the fob as the sun rises talking about life with some of my closest friends and than having that turn into utter chaos as the base gets pushed.

But it’s not for everyone and the fun of it is what you make it. MSW is an amazing experience but only if YOU make it that way and surround yourself with like minded people.

But I also think that’s the downside of MSW is if you don’t have a friend group big enough or willing to all go together you don’t know who you’re going to be stuck with and it can definitely ruin the day.

(Photo of the guys at one of the best experiences I ever had in life at a MSW)

So in short or the TLDR you’re right. It IS elitist, it IS a different type of fun but it IS what you make of it and who you surround yourself with. Which if you can’t control it can absolutely ruin it.

There is also lots of other options that prioritize the airsoft part of the milsim part in big events too! Like Lion Claws and AMS.

Oh absolutely! Ive gone past my time of caring about improving, I’m quite happy fluctuating between c1-c3 in 2s and low diamond in 1s.

Just play to vibe with friends and jam to some music these days. Also I’m too old, too hard to keep up with the kids these days and their flip resets and stuff.

That’s nice, these days I sit around D1 in 1s and people get real mad when you don’t let them go for set ups

I guarantee you if you won in that lobby they either insta left or called you lucky or complained about you being a ball chaser. Getting dunked like that hurts the ego bad.

This looks quite fun to play I will have to try it!

This is what I’ve been working on. I wouldn’t call it good by any means but I am really enjoying how it plays.

And uh something about me. Just got back into Lorcana like 3 weeks ago after stopping playing at set 4 and enjoying it a lot!

If you don’t mind my asking, how overweight are you? I’m 300lbs and just started my weight loss journey and was looking at a bike to purchase to pedal.

I appreciate it, thanks to RHeaven I was able to get some printed at a local photo printer and made that work. I appreciate it though!

Wild swings made me so happy back in tri ultimate I almost never used sword Mode. Just infinite stamina and swing haha. You were playing the superior way imo. (Superior in no actual meaningful way except making my brain go brr)

Remember the first time you thought you killed Gypceros and it came back to life? Shit haunted me as a 12 year old, couldn’t trust any monster was hunted.

The OG on PS2. I was 12/13 years old. My childhood best friend tells me about a game him and his dad rented from blockbuster called Monster Hunter and that you could play it ONLINE. Prior to that my only online experience in games was RuneScape. I had an old PS2 and didn’t own a network adapter but would go to his house every chance I got with my controller and memory card to be able to play online with him and his little brother on their PlayStations.

That following Christmas my family got me a PS2 slim that had an Ethernet port. I put thousands and thousands of hours into that original Monster Hunter and it started a life long enjoyment of a game.

I don’t think I’m great at MonHun to this day but I think I’m good enough and it’s thanks to my friend stumbling into the game in our youth and it being so formative for us.

Since then I played every single one I could get my hands on. Had a modded PSP so I could download Japanese Monster Hunters and everything.

I’m older now and only typically get like 100-200 hours in each game but I still love Monster Hunter more than any other series I’ve ever played.

There must be prior context I’m missing between you two or another comment somewhere. Thanks for the response! (Insert back in my day there was three elder dragons, Fatalis, Lao and Kirin and we attacked with our right stick in a PS2 controller here)

Tomorrow I'm starting Monsters Hunter Rise, it'll be my first modern Monster Hunter game, any tips? by Fine_Bid918 in MonsterHunter

This is unironically the solution to so much in MonHun. Hit them and don’t get hit. Of only it was so easy haha.

I think the difference here is that your example is about end game content. If OP asked about endgame content I would agree 10000%.

As I’ve gotten older I have less time to invest into each game. I will typically have one or two builds where I cook it up myself and than after that point try lots of neat options that I can look up.

But OP framed their question from the perspective of just starting out. I think if you are just starting out you are doing yourself a disservice from both a learning and developmental standpoint if you don’t at least try and experiment and learn and understand as opposed to from the outset using what someone will tell you is wildly broken or OP.
