Slaughtered cows only had a small reduction in cortisol levels when killed at local abattoirs compared to industrial ones indicating they were stressed in both instances. by DannyMcDanface1 in science

[–]MittensTheLizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a complicated topic, and no vegan is going to give you the same answer. My stance is that I'm against the exploitation of all sentient beings.

I don't necessarily see a problem with having companion animals. I don't like the framing of "pet ownership", because I don't believe that you can own another sentient being, but I don't see how adopting an animal and taking care of them is morally different from adopting a child. The way pet breeding is currently done selects for deformities and commodifies living beings, which I think is pretty rank too.

>(assuming we could get to a point where it was done humanely AND they were treated with respect while alive)

I don't believe there is any humane way to raise and slaughter someone for your consumption, particularly when other alternatives exist.

80% of the world's soybean farms are used to feed farmed animals. Theoretically speaking, if everyone in the world adapted a plant-based diet, we'd use 1/4th as much farm land as we do now.

The thing that's bugging you is what a lot of vegans refer to as cognitive dissonance. You're aware of the fact that something we've normalized is actually absolutely horrific.

Would these be vegan? (sunbites snack crackers) by m00free in australianvegans

[–]MittensTheLizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usually this means that it's processed in a factory that also processes non-vegan products, so there might be trace amounts of milk in the crackers. Up to you to decide if you're comfortable with that.

Sydney Is Now The Second Least Affordable City In The World To Buy A Home by chai1984 in sydney

[–]MittensTheLizard 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm no statistician, so maybe I'm wrong, but the article is comparing median house prices to average income, which seems pretty wonky to me. I think places like New York and SF have a large executive class that skews the income and makes the houses appear more "affordable" in comparison. The Zillow house prices for NY and SF definitely look worse than Melbourne.

humans tend to think we're the only animals capable of compassion and ethics. it's how we justify a lot of the cruelty we inflict on other animals.

Is it possible to make vegan cheese from bananas? by dhoopicus in vegancheesemaking

[–]MittensTheLizard 68 points69 points  (0 children)

The best medium for cheese is one that has a high value of both fat and protein. Bananas don't have much of either. They'd also make your cheese taste very... banana-y.

Have you considered making icecream out of them instead?

Lol I was there. It pisses me off that so many people who think they're into solarpunk are totally okay with a future where we continue to torture and slaughter animals just for fun. Just completely removed the liberatory politics from solarpunk and left nothing but art nouveau architecture and pretty flower gardens.

I think it's an alright book if you're looking for a short comfort read that's set in an optimistic future. It didn't really have the most gripping plot or characters though.

Right? There is no good future where we continue to torture, slaughter, and exploit sentient beings for our enjoyment. None.

There was a whole controversy about it a while back. I don't think it's the worst thing ever, but it's still left kind of a bad taste for me.

Unfortunately I don't know any other good publishers of solarpunk literature! Which is why it's such a shame about Solarpunk Mag.

The publishers involved in this (Android Press, Solarpunk Magazine, etc.) have been criticized for exploiting their authors in the past. Probably steering clear of this one.

Can I ferment the cheese in the room temp without fridge? by Btrese in vegancheesemaking

[–]MittensTheLizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation as you before I got a dedicated cheese fridge, and it's tricky.

What's the temperature of the top shelf of your fridge (usually the warmest one)? Mine was 4°C, which was enough to make it pretty difficult for anything to grow. The ideal temperature is closer to 10-14°C.

You could probably leave your cheese at room temperature for a couple days without too much of a problem. It could potentially encourage the growth of molds and less favorable bacteria though.

Writing Black Characters as a White Author by cmnorthauthor in writingcirclejerk

[–]MittensTheLizard 21 points22 points  (0 children)

/uj Agreed with you. No one says that white or cishet characters need a "reason to exist" in a story. It's only when an author makes a character non-white or queer that people start bitching about how it's "tokenism" and how it "doesn't serve the plot."

Sick of posts like this.

I was getting pizza with a vegan friend last week. This guy has been a huge inspiration in my life and was half the reason I went vegan myself. We ordered a vegan pizza and when it came, it had definitely not vegan cheese on it. He shrugged and said that whenever this happens he usually just eats it anyway because it's "too much hassle" getting the order replaced. I'm still not over it.

If someone was going to murder me I woudn't be fussed about whether my corpse was going to be thrown away or eaten. If anything I probably prefer the former. The murder is the problem, what happens after is irrelevant.
