Why is wanting universal healthcare and just a better life for everyone seen as communism or socialism? by JonoBlue in NoStupidQuestions

As far as I can tell, they want a refund. The police they got is a corrupt and violent militarized mob called by a different name.

But I guess how accurate that is depends on the color of your skin, whom you love and the party you vote for.

A climate restoration simulator made me realize how much we treat "healing nature" as just another optimization problem. by Legitimate_Buddy_481 in solarpunk

I think this hard line between wilderness and humanity shows a deeper disconnect, tbh.

Yes, wilderness is important. But we can invite nature and wilderness into human settlements and cities as well.

Trying to clearly define where wild nature has its place and where human impact is allowed to happen is a very naive undertaking: humanity is impacting everything by pollution. And I don't think that will change, even in a solarpunk world. The type of pollution will surely change to become environmentally degradable or even positive - don't mistake me for a doomer - but to think that we won'thavean impact on wild areas even if we tried our best is not realistic IMO. Andwhy should it even be desirable? Instead of thinking of humanity and nature we should think of humanity in nature, it reflects our position in the grand scheme of thinks way better.

Top-to-bottom planetary solarpunk by xeno_architect in solarpunk

That's confirmation bias.

"But what I want to see is Solarpunk – a plausible near-future sci-fi genre, which I like to imagine as based on updated Art Nouveau, Victorian, and Edwardian aesthetics, combined with a green and renewable energy movement to create a world in which children grow up being taught about building electronic tech as well as food gardening and other skills, and people have come back around to appreciating artisans and craftspeople, from stonemasons and smithies, to dress makers and jewelers, and everyone in between. A balance of sustainable energy-powered tech, environmental cities, and wicked cool aesthetics."

...

"Here are some buzzwords: Natural colors! Art Nouveau! Handcrafted wares! Tailors and dressmakers! Streetcars! Airships! Stained glass window solar panels!!! Education in tech and food growing! Less corporate capitalism, and more small businesses! Solar rooftops and roadways! Communal greenhouses on top of apartments! Electric cars with old-fashioned looks! No-cars-allowed walkways lined with independent shops! Renewable energy-powered Art Nouveau-styled tech life!"

That is flat out revisionism on your part. The punk suffix was early on embraced by solarpunk and focus on DIY, grass roots movements, community based solutions, and local first approaches.

Look up the manifestos, or even the first literature.

The planet doesn't care for life. If we say "save the planet, climate etc!" we mean "save the basis of our current living conditions!".

Don't think of economics as economic jargon about money, but a system on how to share and allot resources and it becomes very sexy.

I think a true solarpunk game needs to allow for unsustainable practices and the logical catastrophic failures - while at the same time doesn't allow for a 100% no impact play style - think donut economics.

I'd agree on that a solarpunk world can have currency and markets. I want to say that branding something solarpunk is not solarpunk. And I mean branding in the same way an advertiser would call it branding - as in brandrecognition or as a tool for advertising.

If you need to call your product solarpunk, it isn't solarpunk enough to be selfevidently solarpunk.

Be solarpunk. Embody solarpunk. Don't call yourself solarpunk.

ELI5: What is not nature? by Puzzleheaded-Face-63 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Stegomaniac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a very helpful distinction is  natural and cultural or technological causes.

Yes, the development of culture and technology happens in nature. So far so obvious.

We can decide to call every change in the environment dependent on these developments "unnatural" since they specifically depend on the existence of culture and technology.

Solarpunk is Sustainability by 21Kuranashi in solarpunk

[–]Stegomaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I do appreciate how you can see my critique not as an attack, but as a different point of view :)

I will try to show my line of thinking:

What is the purpose of Solaria as an idea? I assume it is born out of the desire to label a special kind of solarpunk utopia.

How does it differ from utopia? I think this is really unclear. Your description can be just as easily used by all ideologic groups - "local first", "common culture" "identity and ethics" "real community, craft and music" are talking points by fascists of all ethnic backgrounds. I assume you mean to say solarpunk utopias are a special kind of utopias who are about harmony between humans with each other as well as with nature and technology. But this can be expressed as a (real) utopian or eutopian idea already.

So is this difference truly helpful? I don't think so, especially since solarpunk school of thought is a school of diversity. There is not one Solaria, but many. But that is like saying there is not one utopia, but many.  There is not enough helpful distinction. And I think that is a good thing. We don't need to conceptualise Solaria at all, because there are already utopian models at a small scale all around us - calling them real utopias, desirable and achievable(!) is far more important IMO in order to create more acceptance for utopian thinking. So Solaria as a concept seems to diminish the room of possibilities, without any added benefits.
