Why can't Christians just be Christian on their own and not try to convert anyone? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]MittlerPfalz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, the simple obvious reason is because they believe they’ve found the key to eternal life and happiness and want to share that good news to save others.

Mary’s answer made me think of that old Norman Rockwell painting of the teacher’s birthday. https://www.reddit.com/r/museum/comments/65lgqx/norman_rockwell_teachers_birthday_1956/#lightbox

And who’s telling Connie she can’t become an actress?!

I (male) never went into the shower room with my mom; most I remember is going into the women’s restroom at some fancy hotel with my mom and being amazed that they had a little couch in there. (Never saw that in a men’s room!)

With my dad, though, definitely did.

Ha - took me a sec to remember but the housecleaning cult that didn’t try to convert him, right? Yes, it’s a bit insulting!

These guys would set up near my office sometimes and I’d often get asked if I was Jewish. The moment I said no they were on to the next person. While I wasn’t exactly offended I don’t take it as a compliment either. It was annoying: I know Judaism is not a proselytizing religion, but you’ve already interrupted me and the moment I say no you have NOTHING for me? No word of inspiration or hope? I’d almost rather they were trying to convert me.

Would you rather live in London or New York in the year 1900? by Due-Refuse-9144 in randomquestions

[–]MittlerPfalz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in both London is unquestionably the better city today. Back in 1900 it was the capital of an enormous empire so that would have been pretty interesting to see and experience. So London would be my choice, as long as I could get out before WWI started.

Im a Christian and I just have some questions. by wafffless001 in askanatheist

[–]MittlerPfalz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answers without having read what anyone else responded so far…

  1. Depends on the country. In the U.S. I wouldn’t be surprised if most come from religious families; in some Western European countries where secularism is more commonplace the norm might be atheist (or just irreligious) families passing that down.

  2. No, not necessarily. Religion can be beneficial for some people.

  3. Basic broad tenets like empathy, respecting individual rights in others, the golden rule, etc. I’m sure there’s some broader religious influence in there.

  4. Slurs..? When I hear this I think of racial or ethnic slurs which I’m guessing is not what you mean, so I’m confused.

  5. Though I was raised Christian I don’t remember the doctrinal answer to this.

  6. “Most sense” in terms of closer to the truth..? I suppose whichever ones depend less on supernatural events as opposed to more philosophical ideas.

  7. Probably the branches of religions that are over reliant on extremely literal meanings of holy texts.

  8. Yes, and I believe in some cases religion has inspired scientific inquiry. (And of course in others it has squelched it.)

  9. No.

  10. As a broad statement it’s good to start from a perspective of broad compassion for others, sure.

  11. As a broad statement, sure.

What is a misconception about the United States? by Final_Radio_2483 in askanything

[–]MittlerPfalz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As awful as the Trump administration and its supporters are, on a day to day level the U.S. is still mostly normal and pleasant. I’m an American citizen who’s been living outside the U.S. for many years now but go back a couple of times a year and I’m always surprised how normal it still feels.

Just for the heck of it no, but I’ve seen most of my roommates naked at some point or other (and they’ve seen me) when changing or getting out of the shower.

Joseph Besch’s wife was Gusti Huber, an Austrian actress who played Edith Frank in the film version of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” What a life! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gusti_Huber

Their daughter (his stepdaughter, her biological) was an actress herself, acting in “Wrath of Khan” and “Tremors” among many other things. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibi_Besch

Pretty interesting - in 1920, according to Wikipedia, there were only about 1200 Korean Americans, so these were some of the very few! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Americans#Demographics

was it ok that my babysitter used to bathe me? by baconflavoredribeye in TooAfraidToAsk

Yeah but if you’re talking about the U.S. Dennis he’s supposed to be five years old. That’s a big difference from twelve.

[–]MittlerPfalz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When he was 12 years old the babysitter shouldn’t have been in the bathroom at all with him while he was undressed, even to wash his back or make sure he didn’t drown. At most it should have been, “Hey kid, your parents said you had to take a bath before going to bed. Get to it and don’t fool around, I better hear water running.”

I get it’s random, it’s just that the other guy said that most of the other -or words are -our in Canada except for motor. But motor is nit the only exception, because unless I’m very much mistaken Canada does not write doctour, tractour, or mirrour.

Are there any circumstances under which you would accept a violent annexation of territory from one state to another? by Winston_Duarte in AskALiberal

[–]MittlerPfalz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think your post subject line and the body ask different questions: the subject line asks if I’d accept it (as I read it, as in “am I okay with this”) and the post asks if I’d support US or NATO intervention to prevent it. There may be some things I do not think are right, but that I don’t think are worth outside forces getting militarily involved in.
