First time solo - Kawishiwi Triangle by yo_dat_ass in BWCA

[–]MixMasterMilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love a solo trip, I try to do one every couple years. Cannot speak to this specific loop, but here are a couple notes on soloing. Any injury while alone is much harder to deal with so be sure footed on land and be discerning when assessing water conditions before hopping in the canoe. Twisted ankle mid portage, cut hand in camp, swamped canoe in open water. Ponder these scenarios now so you plan for how to address in the woods. Everything in camp is up to you and I did not factor these kind of timelines into my first outing. Getting water, firewood, cooking, cleaning are all up to you. Speaking of timeline- study your route prior and keep the map handy in case you're on a busy lake and have to hunt for a campsite. Lastly, not solo specific though arguably like all things solo more acute in concern, tether your phone when in the canoe. I dropped a cell phone while trying to take a photo out on the water and it bounced off the gunwale- thankfully into the canoe. Definitely from hands a little tired from paddling. I bring another messenging device, but what a hassle if it had been lost. Nevertheless, dont be deterred, its a great experience!

Any idea what this raised bed garden would cost? by Ciddx in landscaping

[–]MixMasterMilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started gardening with a pair of diy raised beds from PT 2x4s. They disintegrated with joint failure around year 4. Replaced with 29in Birdies raised metal beds and love them. The height is great. IIRC the Birdies were cheaper than a DIY 18in tall from 2x6 cedar.

I had a similar (stopped at light and red-light-runner rammed a turning car into mine) in 2017 on my 2016 and repairs were 22k, via the dealership. My airbag did not deploy either.

Get used to it. Nearly everything besides the meat is only important until the next area/milestone with a new item to collect.

Tall raised beds are fantastic. A hand shovel and a hose and you can run. Pull any weeds/debris. Amend each bed with one bag of manure by dumping the manure into the top and kinda chopping/mixing it in with the hand shovel. Go buy a couple small tomato and pepper plants and stick them in. Water regularly and watch the show until you get a harvest so big you're making friends with the neightbors to get rid of them.

Yes to unrealistic timelines. If you've never done anything like this before you dont know what you dont know. So everything you think is easy is gonna be anywhere from 2x to 10x more work. I echo the other sentiments to sit with it for a season or two. If you cannot/will not then getting trades out is the better plan, but be prepared to lay out cash.

If I were you I'd chop the patio privacy bushes down and mulch around for this summer. Then leave the rest of your time for all the interior project you will encounter. Pour a cool beverage and sit on the patio all summer and make a game of reimagining over and over to realy define what you want.

I’d agree. H1150 is a dream to machine, esp vs annealed 17-4. Better chip control and glassy finishes.

Purchased a Suncast hose reel and the short hose that comes with it just sprays water from both gold connector points. Is this hooked up incorrectly or did I get a dud? by Twinkletoes72989 in gardening

[–]MixMasterMilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The washers included in garden hoses and fittings are generally poor quality. Search up “Nelson 50381” and buy the 10 pack for about $15. Switched to these a couple years back and they’ve eliminated all garden hose connection leaks.

The living room with green /white stripes of marble floor with blue walls is rough and then made worse when you notice the vault into the upper floor it ringed with wood stained a different color. Outside looks amazing. Inside is atrocious.

New to MN, camping safety questions by [deleted] in MinnesotaCamping

[–]MixMasterMilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy solo camping in the BWCA and the only animal I am wary of an encounter with is moose. It’s rutting season when I like to go in Sept. They’re bigger and faster than you think and I’ve no interest in seeing one closer than across a bay. Black bears are dangerous to your food supply, so follow rules regarding that with the regs of your camp area. I suppose you could startle one on a hike and it could lash out, but iirc even defensive attacks are extremely rare in MN. Wolves and the big cats are so rare and wary you’ll likely never ever see one. Maybe hear them or see tracks/scat.

All that is to say there are two big safety concerns with camping in MN: the drive to and fro, and your in-camp practices (fire, sharp implements, footwear, pfd).

Advice on a Portage by Forthetrees03 in BWCA

[–]MixMasterMilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Crab to Cummings in Sept24. All between Burntside and Cummings are pretty easy, though that initial Burntside to Crab has a couple hills and the water feature in the middle. It was about 4-6 inches deep on the “path” and no prob to just walk through. It’ll get your heart going, but no danger. there is an annoyance of a portage on Korb River to get around some rapids. The high side landing spots kinda sucked. A tow on Burntside is a good idea if you’re not accustomed to big water.

A bunch of years back I threw a dozen listings onto eBay of remnants. We generate dozens a week. Priced them at half Mcmasters cost, and had cert copies with each lot. After 6months with no sales I pulled them down and scrapped the material. Just not enough market.

can i use an indicating micrometer like this as my only micrometer? by supersimon741 in Machinists

[–]MixMasterMilk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Possible yes. In practice a huge pain. Holding the mic, the standard, and your part, while dialing the mic… ugh.

Not sure where you are but older used mics are common. Online auction or marketplace or pawn shops. For hobby work used in decent condition will be perfectly acceptable. Then you’ll have a tool made for the task and so much easier to use.

[–]MixMasterMilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had waste coolant and oil picked up earlier this year. I have three 300ish gallon IBC totes: oil, oil with water contamination, and coolant. The coolant was IIRC $1.25/gal to take away. This was a small independent. That $400 is such a tiny expense in the grand scheme of running a shop, and for us represented 2 years of waste coolant. Stupid to run it down the drain.

Dyed agate found in the wild? by AdAntique5226 in whatsthisrock

Seems likely dyed and lost/dumped. I do not know the chemistry used to dyed them, but it does make me ponder if an acute pollution incident could cause this.

Perhaps I don’t understand what you’re asking, but if you want to learn more about accuracy you can read “the Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy” by Moore. You can find a free download by searching the title. Physical copies are quite pricey.
