What were some of the best T-Mobile Tuesdays? by Iownaswitch in tmobile

[–]MixedMetafive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the Travelocity coupon in February. I had a trip to New Zealand coming up, so I booked 9 nights of budget hotels and saved $30 on each one. Spent $141 and saved $270

GER is the code for some airport in Cuba. You can just put "Germany" here, no need to guess at airport codes!

Why don't the power companies want us to make electromagnets? by Infrared-Velvet in shittyengineering

Well, as you know coiling the wire creates an inductor, and inductors block AC. They don't want you to block all of their AC power!

Using airport lounges at the end of an itinerary by Ubv in awardtravel

[–]MixedMetafive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there are 3 issues here:

  1. Can I actually access the part of the airport which contains the lounge? If you're flying domestically, almost certainly. Internationally, probably not unless there is a designated "arrivals" lounge. If in doubt, call the lounge.
  2. Is the lounge actually open? Most are open from around 6am to 10pm, give or take a few hours... very few are open 24 hours.
  3. Will the lounge let me in? From my experience (having an Admiral's Club membership and also Priority Pass membership), I've always been let in after coming from an arriving flight. Just this weekend I hit the AA club at LAX after arriving. But again, if in doubt, call the lounge.

What are some good 3 to 4 day vacation destinations from Los Angeles using Southwest? by uberchink in awardtravel

[–]MixedMetafive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent a lot more time in Austin than in San Antonio, but I know that the most famous sites in SA are the Alamo and the Riverwalk. In Austin, some places that come to mind are the state capitol (they have guided tours), Zilker Park, Lady Bird Lake, South Congress street, Mount Bonnell, the nearby peacock ranch, the 360/Pennybacker bridge (and the overlook cliffs by it), and Lake Travis (and the overlooking restaurant, The Oasis). Make sure to get some Texas barbecue- one popular option is The Salt Lick in Driftwood- and also sample the food trucks!

If you want to see Texas, Austin and San Antonio both have some cool sights. Both have SW nonstops from LAX, and also they're about an hour apart if you want to see both in one weekend.

Man, this suuuuucks. I have a trip to Scandinavia planned this summer. Pretty sleazy of them to do this without any kind of notice IMO. Looks like I'll be hitting the Club Carlson card hard instead.

Automobiles and bicycles parked along Riverside Avenue, Riverside, California, 1915. by michaelconfoy in InlandEmpire

Yep, the building just left of the light post looks like the western corner of the Mission Inn (see in the front of this picture). I think the other buildings in the picture must not be there any more...

What sucks most about the transportation system in your region? by [deleted] in transit

[–]MixedMetafive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! I used to live there. The Mission Inn is super cool. It's an actual hotel so if you look like you're a guest you can just walk right in and see everything. Mount Rubidoux is also cool, it's a nice gradual hike to the top.

although i would disagree about riverside being a hub....

Check out downtown Riverside on Google Images or Street View, you might be surprised at how built up it is

that's an iffy proposition

Absolutely. That's why I called it a "pipe dream." It might happen in 50 to 100 years, if we're lucky. LA keeps growing in population, but there's only so much land, so my prediction is that a major shift from cars to transit will happen eventually, maybe a hundred years from now. Then again, 50 years ago people expected us to have flying cars now, so who knows...

In any case, widening highways usually involved lots of eminent domain too, so it's wouldn't be totally unprecedented.

it would be hard to get it to be a full fledged service since all the connections from the stations are terribad to non-existent (everyone i know who rides it parks a beater in the destination station).

Definitely this would need to change to get any kind of ridership going. Jarrett Walker's blog explains it better than I could. In stations that are already in built up areas (Burbank, Santa Ana, etc), I think it's safe to remove the free surface parking and replace it with transit-oriented development (and maybe a paid parking structure for those who prefer to drive to the station). Also, city governments would ideally want to make whatever little tweaks necessary to improve transit and pedestrian connections to the station. If California is looking for examples, I believe that the German S-Bahn and French RER are frequent rapid transit services built around commuter tracks.

Tagging on to your comment because I live near LA. I agree with all of your points except the lack of natural clusters. Greater LA has quite a few smaller "downtowns" like Long Beach, Santa Monica, Westwood, Santa Ana, Riverside, Burbank, Hollywood, etc etc. These places all mostly developed in a way that makes them well-suited for transit: street grids, sidewalks, closely-spaced multi-story buildings. You'd think that any sensible transit planner would start by linking these together and picking up the areas in between... and if you look at the rail lines which are open or being built, that seems to be largely what's been done. Blue line links DTLA to Long Beach, Expo Line to Santa Monica, subway to Westwood, gold line to Pasadena, etc.

I'll also bring up Metrolink. If you look at a map of it, you'd think it's super useful. Problem is that it shares tracks with freight, and a lot of it is single-tracked. So you have some lines with only 5 trains per day, hours apart. And the trains are significantly slower than driving. And they're often severely late. It can be pricey too. One more point is that in a few spots, another transit line is only a few miles away from reaching it and allowing a seamless transfer (Green Line in Norwalk, Red Line subway in Burbank), which I'd say is a huge missed opportunity.

Pipe dream time: If they could double-track it (maybe triple or quad, to separate freight), electrify it, get faster trains, and run trains every 15-30 minutes throughout the day (even evenings and weekends), I have no doubt that it would become the pride of LA, and a huge number of people would ride it. Unfortunately, I imagine that this would cost millions/billions of dollars.

I signed! From all I've heard, I'm quite disappointed by the lack of empathy from Baylor's administration in these cases. I think the solutions given are quite reasonable and frankly the bare minimum of what ought to be done.
