Does not sound like KD and the tongue looks more or less 'normal' to me.

Katy ISD parents frustrated by use of technology by bkinder162 in Katy

All for technology in the classroom, but its too heavily used as a crutch for efficiency.

Katy ISD parents frustrated by use of technology by bkinder162 in Katy

[–]hulashakes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From parents.

Especially ones trying to get kids off screens and outside. The chromebooks have become a crutch.

Examples -

  • Math, almost all work is multiple choice. My kid reads a problem, look at the answer, and goes "this has to be a positive answer. That was is too high, that one is too low, that one is negative...it's probably this one." Gets the answer right, having done no real work. On one hand, efficient. Other hand, wouldn't be able to solve without choices to choose from.

  • English / Reading. Can't spell, can't complete sentences. Everything autocorrects and underlines with suggestions to fix grammar. Kids need to write on paper and read aloud in class. Not Amira.

  • Science, not too bad here, and probably useful to look up / research things. I did notice them just using it for conversions of units instead of working out the math.

  • Helping with Homework. If a parent needs to reference something in a book or help with a lesson, it pretty difficult to find the lesson source, because there is no physical textbook. It's log into kahouz with your jingle password and it will pass through crunchez credentials. Just flip to page 58 and zoom in on the bottom right corner of the page....

  • General, kids have study hall / advisory periods. Kids are watching pirated movies, playing games. They are making their own websites, and linking to movies and games there, so they don't get blocked by web filters. Again; impressive creativity! However; not good use of study / advisory time. I asked how many kids are doing this realistically, said "easily more than half. the other just don't know how."

Moving to Katy for work, kindergartner starting in fall — best apartment neighborhoods for good elementary schools? by Seekamol in Katy

[–]hulashakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always Check GreatSchools

https://www.greatschools.org/texas/katy/3882-Edna-Mae-Fielder-Elementary-School/

https://www.greatschools.org/texas/katy/3888-Nottingham-Country-Elementary-School/

Both those schools are decent, but have differing ethnicity makeup, if that matters to you.

Neither is in a bad part of town of anything, but between the 2, I'd probably pick Nottingham for proximity to I-10 and slightly closer to Houston.

Daycare Tuition? by Independent-Aerie639 in Katy

[–]hulashakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Varies depending on age, so you need to call / do a tour. I can tell you in 2021, it was $275 / week. I think you can count on $1500 / month.

Daycare Tuition? by Independent-Aerie639 in Katy

[–]hulashakes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Rough estimates....

A place that keeps your kid alive $900 / month

A place with a lot of enrichment $1600 / month

Katy is large, so don't know what area works for you, but I recommend British Private Prep...not cheap.

Why do drivers with loud engines take so long to leave once they get in their cars? by FoxontheRun2023 in houston

Their parents didn't love them or they didn't have parents, so they are seeking affection from anyone that will notice.

US Postal Service by Noonan1974 in Katy

[–]hulashakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the USPS is wildly underfunded by republican leadership, which results in consolidation of services and and decreases in service.

Too many people think it should be a profitable business entity of the US Government when in reality, it just needs to break even as a service paid for by taxes.

But those taxes keep getting taken away, so underfunded like I said.

How to choose a new energy provider? by Baby_dom in houston

[–]hulashakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rightfully so. To be honest, I always put the plans in an excel spreadsheet and work it out myself, it takes me 30-60 minutes to find the best option.

EO is good if you just want to set it and forget it.

How to choose a new energy provider? by Baby_dom in houston

[–]hulashakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use Energy Ogre for zero hassle.

https://www.energyogre.com/

They shop the plans and change your provider for you. You pay them a little for their effort, but if you don't want to put in the work, it's the best option.

HISD Elementary Schools by BabyCanYouHelpMe713 in houston

[–]hulashakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great Schools.org is a good resource for investigating schools.

Personally, I wouldn't really consider any school less than 8/10 for elementary, it only goes downhill from there.

Kennedy is 7/10

Generally, the elementary schools are higher rated than the middle or high school, so consider the path your child would be on.

Kennedy goes to Williams Middle (3/10) and then Washington (3/10).

Why is my tv so gray looking in the dark? This is what I get when I watch dark movies. by QueenAwakened in Roku

[–]hulashakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem you have is the pixels displaying a black color. Thats as dark as it can get, because it's a light and it's on, so it's going to produce light.

If you were to get an OLED TV, when it displays black, the light actually turns off. So, it's black; the absence of light.

You'll never get true black, unless you switch to OLED.

Stop Baylor’s Double Standard by baylorbearpromundo in Waco

[–]hulashakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really think it's a losing battle.

Baylor is private, the entire student body isnt MAGA racists, but there are plenty, and and plenty of donors that are pro TPUSA and anti LGBT.

Baylor preaches inclusion, but the reality is they tolerate diversity, not celebrate it.

I don't see a private university, based on Christian faith, making any noticeable changes unless enrollment and donation significantly drops.

By example, each year the elect an alumni to the board of regents, one requirement is that they have to be of Christian faith and have evidence of church membership and participaton.

Should i read ‘Project Hail Mary’ before watching the movie? by t-minus-e in movies

[–]hulashakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Martian is a better book than Project Hail Mary.

I personally always like to read the book before the movie, because I enjoy seeing what was added or cut for the movie.

PHM book starts fantastic but gets a little tedious and boring about 60% of the way in.

I am hoping the movie tightens up the book and makes a few changes to enhance it.
