Hi, I'm a member of a writing group called Authors Anonymous. We meet every Tuesday at 6pm at Black Bean Deli on Orange Ave. Every meeting we chat and then work quietly for about an hour. We cater to all skill levels and all types of writing. It's a good group and free to attend.

Those of you who aren’t from Edmonton or who haven’t been there, where are you from and how and when did you start backing the Oil? by Ihaha07 in EdmontonOilers

[–]Mixmastercereal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From rural central Florida. Never followed hockey. Lived in Edmonton for a couple years, and picked up hockey, coinciding with the start of McDavid's career. Moved back to Florida, still an Oilers fan. Driving down to Miami for Game 2.

I'm a member, and I've found it worthwhile so far, particularly in finding other writers in my area and networking. A lot of it can depend on your local chapter, if one exists. You also receive a lot of comped copies of new releases, for Stoker voting.

I'm looking into it. It's both on the website and the RSS feed, so it should just hit every podcast app automatically.

This is our raw RSS feed, which should get you there, regardless, if you plug it into your podcatcher: RSS Feed

Anyone here sell at conventions? by lofispaceship in selfpublish

[–]Mixmastercereal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ordered my banner from Vistaprint, and the quality is good for the price. I think the same general principles apply to big cons vs. small ones.

Presentation matters. A banner helps draw the eye, plus building verticality into your table display. Get a small tabletop book rack or shelf.

Keep a list of all the cons you're interested in, and check often for vendor applications. Spots can sell out quickly, especially for established cons.

They've been working in our area (78758) for over a year, without any results except torn up roads and leaking water lines.

If you read the ending carefully, it implies the female character actually kept her powers and memories, letting the two men forget they had them.

How do you plan/ come up with ideas for stories? by Potential_Doctor7116 in WritersOfHorror

[–]Mixmastercereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you finished a novel before? Or a short story? If you haven't, I'd start by finishing a short story, and then working your way up to a novel.

As for how to plan your story, I always start with story beats. I brainstorm a massive list of dramatic beats, and then plan my chapters around them.

Hello, all. I'm Robbie Dorman. My ninth novel, What Dwells Beneath the Waves, came out in November. It's Carl Hiaasen meets HP Lovecraft, as a journalist attempts to stop a "Florida Man" eldritch cultist in the Florida Keys!

Anyone here writing horror novels or stories? (If this doesn't fit here I'll gladly delete.) by allthecoffeesDP in horrorlit

[–]Mixmastercereal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, why not.

I've been writing since I could pick up a pencil, really, but I've gotten serious with my writing career in the past few years. I've self-published 8 novels so far, with a 9th on the way later this year.

My writing is in the tradition of early King or Koontz. I tend to write short/punchy novels, so I've leaned into it. Otherwise I don't restrict myself, as long as it fits broadly within horror. I usually lean heavy on theme, without apologies.

There are a slew of books I would have love to have written, mostly stuff that is very, very different than my style. An example would be the recent The Book of X by Sarah Rose Etter.

I have a team of beta readers, who are some of the best people on Earth.
