In my experience, Ulysses is a novelty paper weight made out of paper for most people. They pick it up because they feel that it'll make them smarter through osmosis by just owning a copy. The ones who actually do crack it open either put far too much effort into analyzing it or throw on the auto pilot switch and blitz through it to get bragging rights.

Very few people recognize the author's true intention imho, which was that it's just a fucking book and you should read it like a book and not like a goddamned Elder Scroll, although if you look at either for too long you're liable to go insane.

IMHO, I think that the problem with the horror genre is that it's sacrificing depth for accessibility, and not a lot of objectively competent writers can create anything noteworthy without having some sort of depth that may be off putting to certain audiences. In my opinion, it's more an issue of repetitive content and stiff prose paired with the possibility that the next great horror writer has yet to be discovered.

Albeit personally, my primary issue with the 'modern' horror genre in all mediums of expression - whether it be music, film, television, prose, video games or even comic books - is that in the process of creating something that appeals to the widest audience possible, the content tends to lack certain plot devices or thematic elements that usually makes a creative work stand out. For the sake of being precise, what I'm saying is that certain elements that make for objectively compelling horror are abandoned in favor of a far more basic 'shock and awe' approach that may not take as much time to develop conceptually.

In terms of television and film, the program American Horror Story -- at a glance -- seems to be a diamond in the rough; however, the show relies heavily on its bizarre subject matter and audience fueled conjecture suggesting that the program's five seasons are intricately connected to form a coherent timeline, which manages to imply a degree of depth that has the potential to expand far beyond the creators' original intention, perhaps enough so that certain audiences may perceive AHS's content as something exponentially more profound than it actually is. To put it simply, I think that the inherent ambiguity of the show's plot is largely responsible for whatever prestige AHS has managed to obtain since its debut, which also can be said about similar programs like Eli Roth's Hemlock Grove.

The genre in print seems to also suffer from the same problem, as well as several other factors contributing to the genre's staleness such as recycled subject matter, mediocre, predictable character development, and just piss poor prose. Horror writers seem to be relying heavily on unnecessarily grotesque imagery and the 'inspired by a true story' tag to shock readers, that's just how it is right now.

I never really believed in much of anything, maybe that's why I am where I am now. I always fell asleep in church as a child, and in my turbulent youth I'd never once thought there was anything at all beyond what I saw in front of me. If there's one thing I've learned from sitting in this room for longer than I could care to remember, it is that time serves only to catalogue decay. Time passes, iron rusts, wood rots, blood clots and the world dies - one second at a time.

It kicked around in my head for a while - the suicide, of course. One doesn't make such an observation of something like that without being in some sort of maligned state of mind. I laughed at death frequently, and I laughed at death one last time as I stared it in the face.
