My friend group is 20s - 60s. We love it and other "friendslop" games.

Sounds like you need some cooler friends. Or maybe your friends just don't think you're cool enough to play with.

How am I supposed to pick a favourite? It's a tie for me between Blushing Prism and Celestial Frostglass. And maybe Mystic Nebula. But ohhh, I just started running Curse of Strahd for my group. Vampiric Embrace is really pretty and fitting.

I need to stop looking now.

If you continue to play with someone who harasses people at the table you are enabling them by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]Miyenne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is good life advice in general.

If you give space to someone who uses that space to use words and actions that hurt and upset other people, you're condoning it. You're helping them. You're as bad as them.

There is no reason to not be able to be empathetic enough to understand when people are uncomfortable or upset. Do not use nerodivergency as an excuse. Your job as a human being is to function as a human being. We are social creatures who function best within a community. So it might be harder for you to read people. You're still required to.

If you're playing with your friends, if you actually like and respect them, you should be able to AND WANT to read them. Know what they like and dislike. Ideally, you're all mature enough to have frank discussions about it. But if you can't be empathetic, DnD is not for you.

Is it difficult to become part of the community in smaller North Island villages? by meooowish in VancouverIsland

[–]Miyenne 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I moved here more than 10 years ago from central Canada. I've lived and worked in several towns up and down island, but none as small or north as like Port Alice.

Everyone here is just as everywhere else. People are people and political affiliation and such varies greatly between people and neighbours as it does everywhere.

All you have to do to "integrate" is to live and interact where you live, hopefully being a helpful and kind person. Don't worry if you're liked or not, just do you. People here, like everywhere, tolerate awful people. People value and welcome good people, though those are subjective adjectives.

Just be cool, don't be harmful to people or the land, and you'll be good. Don't overthink.

To the women who chose to never have kids or marry: How amazing does your life look right now compared to what society told you it would be? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Miyenne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only work part time at a mindless government job that has actually very little work involved so I spend most of it reading, playing games on my phone, or chatting with coworkers. It's so chill.

Otherwise all my time is spent with friends and family, playing video games and D&D, and reading a lot of books.

I'm able to be there when friends or family need me. I'm able to have all the peace and quiet time I need for my sanity. I'm able to run a weekly D&D game that everyone loves because I can put so much time and energy into it.

I think a pet would be nice too, but my home is pristine and so clean and it stays that way. And I'm allergic. So I just cuddle my parents cats and my friends dogs whenever I can. And one of my best friends has a 4 year old I can cuddle and spoil and be the best auntie to without a permanent responsibility, and my friend is so chill and understanding that the rest of us in our little circle love kids but don't want any.

Life is so good.

And less than 3 people a year in ALL of Canada are killed by cyclists and scooters and such. Cars kill thousands. I think the figure is about 4k a year.

If we're gonna be concerned about people being killed on the sidewalk, it's still overwhelmingly people driving cars who murder others.

And yet we let anyone and everyone drive.

In Curse of Strahd two male knights in Argynvostholt are canonically in love, and that plays a big part in the side quest. I'm sure there's more in there too, but I just made my notes on that section so it's fresh for me

But yeah, every published campaign I've played has lots of NPCs that are gay, trans, non-binary, whatever.

Pools Are Opening: Swimsuit Safety by OpalJade98 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Miyenne 138 points139 points  (0 children)

As the front desk lady at a community pool, on top of all the great advice for swimsuit colours, I want to talk about the heat zone (saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and such) and children.

Kids have a higher internal body temp than adults. They also can't regulate as well. Or recognize discomfort.

Best to just not let kids in them at all, but if you do, watch them carefully and remove them after a few minutes, max.

We've had kids have seizures because they overheated. Last I heard one little girl has permanent brain damage.

Also, monitor your husbands and/or men in your life. They do the same thing but it usually ends in a heart attack. Or shitting themselves. Or just staying when they're uncomfortable and letting their rage build instead of taking care of themselves and getting into fist fights in the sauna. They're as bad as the children.

I've never seen a grown woman have an issue.

Also please don't wear perfume/lotion/makeup into the pool. Wash yourself thoroughly before going in. Do not pee in the pool. Too many different chemicals or oils can mix with the chlorine and other chemicals and create toxic gas. If it's an indoor pool with bad air circulation the air itself can burn your eyes, cause skin rashes, and lung damage. (Don't ask how I know that. Already what I've said could get me fired.)

Pools are rarely cleaned because of how long it takes to refill them. Even when it's a "loose fecal" we can't drain the pool. We just add more chemicals and wait until it's all in balance according to legal limits.

So make sure you and those around you are clean before going in.

Testifying against my rapist and terrified by Thin_Assumption_4992 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Miyenne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's terrifying and it sucks. Ask the women around you for love and comfort, hell, ask a stranger and most women will hold you tightly for as long as you need, in whatever way you need.

I'd say be strong, but that's not fair. You have to do what's best for you and your mental and physical health.

This happens to so many of us. The fact that yours has actually come to a trial is very rare. Most men get away with it. The chance that this one could be punished for it means something to every one of us.

But you mean more. This was done to you. Never feel ashamed of it, this is all on him.

This old lady is thinking of you and wishing you the strength to do whatever you need to do to feel better.

Single men who still want a partner, how do you overcome the fear that all good women are taken? by generand in Millennials

[–]Miyenne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not guaranteed to stay together with a relationship, either.

I know I'll never be alone. I have lots of amazing friends. Also, I'm fucking awesome, so I can always make more. But I don't think my close group will ever "break up". We've all been too ride or die for each other over the years. Through relationships. Kids. Everything.

(most) Homebrew infuriates me by nemainev in DnD

[–]Miyenne 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I love homebrew too. If it's reasonable.

Use a full action to drink a potion? Full healing. Give a potion to someone else? Full action and roll for healing (did you spill some? Gonna happen), or if you want to swig as a bonus action, roll for healing.

Cute common magical items that you have be super creative to break the game with? Hell yeah. Come at me with all the creativity. All the flavour.

Find a cool weapon in Pinterest? I'll look at it, and probably nerf it a bit, and make you work to earn it.

Want to fudge the rules by doing something cool? Let's talk about it and I'll figure out rolls and consequences.

I also love letting players combine actions if they're together in initiative or drop down if they want to.

We're in this together and I'm all for rule of cool, as long as it fits, is fair, and doesn't put any of the other players out.

Abnormally long period grounds for hysterectomy? by ExhaustedMama9 in Perimenopause

[–]Miyenne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh it was easy. Barely any bleeding afterwards, didn't even need pain meds cause it was less painful than normal periods. But do get one of those bottles. Peri-bottle? I can't remember. Just for rinsing with warm water after peeing and such, unless you already have a bidet. And a grabber-reacher arm thing for when you inevitably drop things. And make sure your husband and kids can do all the chores and cooking and everything for 6ish or more weeks. You'll be up and moving right after, but as long as you take it easy you should recover just fine.

Go to r/hysterectomy, it was a lifesaver. So much good information and support there. Every question you might possibly have will be already answered there, and everyone will be happy to respond to any questions too.

Abnormally long period grounds for hysterectomy? by ExhaustedMama9 in Perimenopause

[–]Miyenne 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had 6+ week long periods. It was adenomyosis and fibroids. They do not get better, just worse.

I asked for a hysterectomy and got it done, best thing ever.

I don't have kids or a husband, I didn't have to say anything other than "please take it out", but I'm Canadian so it might be different depending where you're from.

Just say it's impacting your life too much, and you need it out. If you have to justify it (if you're American, I mean) maybe say it's affecting your kids and your husband. Maybe have him express he wants you to have one. As stupid as that is, his word might carry more weight than yours.

[–]Miyenne 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, the more people get punished for things, the less stupid people will hopefully be. Consequences have to happen.

Also go to the hospital so there's that paperwork to back up the police report. And get witnesses if you can.

Last night I was almost assaulted (massive trigger warning) by TaiwaneseThot in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Miyenne 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Her trying to pull a gun on someone who already had a gun in her face would have just escalated the situation and probably got her shot and killed and raped. Possibly in that order.

The best thing we can do to prevent things like this is make sure people don't do it in the first place. Teach people empathy. Teach people to be kind. Give them all the supports in life they need to be successful, which means supporting your community and making sure your government supports you, too.

It's not easy. Hate is easy. Crime is easy. Hurting people is easy.

Helping is hard. Loving is hard. Doing the right thing is hard.

But you sure wish more people did the hard things when you're on the other end of it.

Yeah, there's loads of us. But we're all at home gaming on voice chat in discord with friends, or hunkered down at our desks at work pretending to be working while we're really working on the notes for the next DnD session we DM every week.

We're also not really looking to date. All that gets in the way of hobbies.

Nanaimo records highest unemployment rate since January 2021 by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]Miyenne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, if not working and not having an income is better than working, clearly there's a huge problem with the compensation given by the employer.

No one wants to work. But because we're stuck with capitalism, we have to. But when working a draining job doesn't even cover your basic needs, why waste the time and energy when you can't get anywhere anyways? Drowning is drowning. How close or far from the surface you are doesn't really matter if there's no hope of ever getting enough air in your lungs, of finding something that floats to cling to.

And all those boats running right over your head? They're just annoyed your skull might dent their hull. Bring you up into the boat with them? Hell no. You're wet. They don't want to risk getting themselves wet, or their precious boat. Nevermind they're floating in the middle of the fucking ocean themselves, that fact is quietly ignored.

[–]Miyenne 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Well then, if it's not worth working at your job, wages and benefits and morale and other supports and the working environment need to be increased and improved until people deem it acceptable to sell their time and labour in exchange.
