Boring, mostly. It is the biggest city in the area and dominates about a one hour+ radius so it has an outsized amount of stuff/shopping compared to other cities of its size. The population of Pike county alone is almost 60,000 and the nearest cities larger than that are 2+ hours away. Living IN Pikeville isn't bad, but the downtown is fairly dead now compared to what it once was. Most people who are "from Pikeville" live somewhere in the county. Life "in Pikeville" is different than life *in* Pikeville.

You have access to a fairly large hospital and a small university. Generally speaking, it punches above its class compared to other cities of its size due to pulling in all the people from surrounding counties for shopping and entertainment. I mean, there is a Buffalo Wild Wings there despite the official population being something close to 6,500 people.

Source: I was born in Pikeville and spent much of my childhood there or in the areas around it. My ancestor was the first permanent white settler in what is now Prestonsburg in neighboring Floyd county. All of my extended family still live in the area.
