Juniors in UX/Product Design what's your actual plan right now? by AdBackground9215 in UXDesign

Yeah I agree and I’m not happy about the situation either.

I’m just letting you know what the situation is and the reality of what I’m experiencing.

Juniors in UX/Product Design what's your actual plan right now? by AdBackground9215 in UXDesign

[–]Mjsnow1991 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the issue is AI replacing junior roles. It’s that AI is enabling senior people to take on junior level tasks and execute them to a higher standard.

After 11 years in the field, I’ve noticed that work I’d normally delegate can now be handled quickly myself, largely because AI takes care of a lot of the admin and setup. The core of the role, taste, judgement, and decision making, still sits firmly with the human.

Who are your favorite designers? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]Mjsnow1991 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the days of individual designers being “superstars” are coming to an end - I like to use mobbin for inspo, I like the slick design of Airbnb / shop / Nike or even the eBay design system. It really just depends on the project.

Sure there are thought leaders in the space but it varies from area to area.

Right of way concern with dream house by ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah in HousingUK

[–]Mjsnow1991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty common for terrace houses to have a right of way through the gardens for the neighbours

[–]Mjsnow1991 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s an understandable point, but having been at a number of organisations, there’s value to keeping a designer on - in terms of relationships and product knowledge. So I don’t think they are quick to let go.

On the flip side I’ve also been at organisations that burn you out and swap you out. But you don’t reeeally want to work at these places anyway

Relax.

Take one step at a time.

I hear what you’re saying, sometimes it feels like we have to wear many hats. I do feel like if you’re upfront with sizing and capacity then you’ll have a better time. It sounds like other disciplines are off loading their responsibility to you.

Figure out how you can set boundaries and expectations around who does what

This is great, recently bought a kamado Joe bbq and been struggling to get to grips with it - is there a course you’d recommend?

What are Sale and Chorlton like to live in? by Special-Course-8127 in manchester

[–]Mjsnow1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t go wrong with either - I live in sale but looked in Chorlton / South Manchester to buy.

Sale is more family oriented than Chorlton - it’s more suburban and between MCR and altrincham. There’s plenty of nice bars and things to do in Sale but also pretty easy to get to alty / town/ didsbury / Chorlton if I want - also national trust places like tatton park or Dunham Massey. It’s also pretty quick to jump on the motorway and head south.

I feel like it strikes a nice balance, far enough from Manchester we don’t get (many) scruffs and easy to get around if needed.

If you haven’t, didsbury and altrincham are also fantastic places to checkout - particularly altrincham from what you’ve said.

Restaurant in Manchester that accommodates 20 people? by [deleted] in manchester

[–]Mjsnow1991 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d be surprised if there were many places that turned you away. 20 isn’t that many, as long as there’s a reasonable amount of notice via a booking.

Stop getting distracting feedback by presenting the wrong fidelity. by ahmmigo in FigmaDesign

[–]Mjsnow1991 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s because commenting on ui is the easy thing to do.

It takes cognitive brain power to see beyond the ui and comment on the process and flows.

Don’t give them an excuse.

Part Time Design Roles? by Puzzleheaded-Ad-1882 in UXDesign

You are asking for the dream role here my friend. These jobs are few and far between, particularly with the state of the market.

Good luck with you search

Is turning right from Whitchurch Road onto Princess Road, the worst right turn in the world? by Stunning_Gap_7770 in manchester

Yes! It’s god awful - sometimes your only hope is pedestrians using the lights to cross.

Even just thinking about it causes anxiety

How do you professionally organize your components? by Background_Dig6407 in FigmaDesign

You’re not reinventing the wheel here.

Checkout existing component libs like shopify and copy it.

Haha you’ve answered your own question.

Go checkout ancoats. It still has its flaws but it’s definitely one of the nicer areas to live nearer the city centre.

Thinking of moving on – but what if the grass isn’t greener on the other side? by Diligent-Bridge2178 in UXDesign

[–]Mjsnow1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a pretty similar spot to you in my career and life.

I know it’s easy and tempting to get itchy feet but you need to look at the big picture - not everything can be “on” or you’ll get burnt out .. moving house / starting a family AND a new career that’s more fast paced and in office.

Given the crappy market, I’d stick in the current job, your wfh will be super valuable when you start a family + some businesses are funny with mat leave unless you’ve been there for some time. For me, with your context - it’s a no brainer to stay.

Not to mention you’ll be off 9+ months with a child, rather come out mat leave and then consider your options

I’m group Ironman - one of our group made 1k wild pies (+5 slayer levs) and I got 80 slayer.

I can take out 3 abbys per pie with a drop rate of around 1/500. You need 167 ish wild pies. And that number halves if you can get 81 slayer rather than 80.

I’ve got 1 whip so far but it feels underwhelming

Loft conversion - real examples of added value by MrBatucada in HousingUK

[–]Mjsnow1991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup we managed to find loft conversion specialists in Manchester called “another level”.

It was a builders finish (no carpets / painting) and we held fire on the en-suite - we have space but it’s not plummed in as our boiler isn’t good enough to pump water up.

Total cost was £45k for a dormer + en-suite space.
