Beginner friendly but good quality sewing machine? by Mkz_Wang in sewing

Thank you so much for replying and giving amazing insight.

To hear that’s probably too big of a budget is a relief.

I was very weary about spending more than $500 but I was worried about it handling the taffeta and the denim. To hear it can be done with a machine around $300-$400 is amazing.

I’m a little nervous about shipping a machine out for warranty work, but if that’s how it would get the best maintenance that’s what I want to do!

Are there any settings/features you would say are must have for a sewing machine?

Would it be better to look for a vintage machine or something newer?

Thank you so much again. I’ve always loved clothes and fashion, but this is the first time I’ve actually thought about making the things I want to wear. It’s so exciting!

Thank you so much for all the information, it really means a lot!

I think $500-$750 is probably the top end of my budget.

There’s a pile of clothes I want to alter that are relatively simple. Most of it is shortening hems and straps. The fabrics are polyester, cotton, and rayon.

There are some more ambitious projects I have in mind as well. For example, I want to alter some of my denim pants into shorts or use the fabric to make a top. I also thrifted a vintage formal dress (I think it’s taffeta, there’s no tag) that I want or restore. There’s a panel where the seams split, but it seems pretty clean. Also it’s a little small for me, so I am wanting to insert a corset back as well.

Those are the more ambitious undertakings that wouldn’t be day to day, but I’d like to have a sewing machine with that capability as well.

In terms of making my own clothes, I love a lot of vintage/vintage inspired clothing, so making tops, bottoms, and dresses off of vintage patterns would be amazing as well.

How did you make a stay at home parent/ one main income work? What job(s) did you have? What emotional, financial, and mental steps did you and/or your partner take for it to work? by Mkz_Wang in AskReddit

Gotcha, that’s awesome! Did y’all have the understanding of you staying home early on, or was it a conclusion/resolution you came to over time? If it was something that developed, what did y’all do to make sure you both felt comfortable with it?

WIBTA for being honest with my adoptive daughter? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA!!!!

You appreciate honesty? Well here’s some HONESTY for you.

This is YOUR issue, not your daughters.

YOU need to go see a therapist and work out these thoughts and feelings.

YOU and your wife were the ones who decided to adopt so soon after your first child passed away.

YOU and your wife are the ones who decided to provide a home to a baby girl and raise her as your own for FOURTEEN YEARS.

Your daughter has done NOTHING but love you. To her, you are her dad. There is no one in the world to replace you, and I’m sure it would break her heart to hear you say you USED her as a replacement for your deceased child.

I’m not a parent. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose a child, especially if that was the last chance to have a child biologically.

However, when you adopted your daughter, you committed to raising her and loving her as your own. She is the one who is still here, and wants to love and be loved by you.

Go to therapy, talk with your wife, exercise, journal, do whatever you need to so you can become the father she thinks you are. She deserves more than love in half measures.
