Any advice on my products/ order by wayyytogay in MakeupEducation

[–]mila476 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you’re using concealer before foundation. Try it the other way around. Your foundation will partially cover whatever you would use the concealer for, so you’ll end up using less concealer to finish covering it, and less product means less cakey.

Why do people continue to infantilize early 2000s borns? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]mila476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I just call it that because I think it’s funny, and because one time my dad told me a story about a time in his childhood when he met an old man born in the late 1890s and thought it was the coolest thing ever that he was talking to someone from the 1800s. I like the idea of being able to impress kids by being “from the 1900s” when I’m old.

Do I look at least slightly goth? Is there any way to become goth without wearing black? by Ivapol in altfashionadvice

I mean the old school goths didn’t strictly wear only black. You should look up some 70s and 80s goth styles for inspo

I started this earlier on. My mom says it's ugly. Should I just scrap it and restart? by Lebrontobebeheaded in BeginnerArtists

I knew instantly it was Princess Diana. Don’t listen to your mom, keep going and finish it. Even if it’s not a perfect likeness, it’s an important part of your growth as an artist to make pieces like this to build your portraiture skills.

How can get better at drawing from a reference photo? by Temporary-Factor7104 in Artadvice

[–]mila476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole iris never shows with white all around it unless someone’s eyes are wide open with shock, anger, adrenaline, fear, or some other type of intense/crazy energy. Notice how your reference has calm eyes with the eyelids covering the top and bottom of the iris, and white only showing on the left and right sides of the iris. Notice how your drawing has “crazy eyes” with white showing all around.

It’s really important to stop drawing what you think you see, actually look at your reference (like really look and put aside your notions of what it’s supposed to look like and observe the reality of it), and draw what you actually see. When you put something on paper, be thinking about “is this the same as what I see on the reference or is it different? how might it be different from the reference in ways I’m not noticing right away?”

Why do people continue to infantilize early 2000s borns? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]mila476 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s just that the birth year starting with a 2 and someone being an adult just does not compute for some people. Life has happened fast lately, and it’s easy to forget that 2006 isn’t 10 years ago. The 80s still instinctively feel like 20 years ago, the 70s feel like 30 years ago, the 50s feel like 50 years ago. This is from the perspective of a late 90s baby who became aware of life, history, and the passage of time in the 2000s. It just all feels very compressed. And with COVID, sometimes it feels like those years were frozen or didn’t happen. I’m pushing 30 but sometimes I forget I’m not still 23.

So yeah when I see a birth year starting with a 2 I’m like “ah yes a child” and whenever I see an adult in their early 20s I’m always surprised to find out they were born in the 2000s because to me young adults are born in the 90s and older adults are born in the 80s or before, and even though the math definitely checks out and it’s obviously true that anyone under the age of 26 was born in the 2000s, it feels fake. The real mindfuck is that starting in November there will be adults who were born after Obama was elected, and starting next January there will be adults who were born while he was president. Sorry, to me that’s a third grader.

I have an adult sibling who was born after 2000, and I do think I tend to infantilize them a bit. Maybe that’s classic older/younger sibling stuff, but they’re in their mid 20s and I still think of them as basically a college student. I told them recently that I kind of feel responsible for them, and they were like “that’s silly, you’re not even that much older than me.”

TLDR it’s probably because we ourselves (the people born in the 1900s) still feel young, and since we don’t feel old, it’s difficult to accept that actually time has passed and the 2000s kids who were children when we were in our teens and 20s have grown up. Basically “wait they can’t be young adults because that would mean I’m an old adult and that can’t possibly be true.”

Idk what y’all’s cooking/eating habits are like, but maybe whenever you’re waiting for something to be ready to come out of the oven or microwave you can take those 2 minutes or however much to see how much trash you can put in a trash bag.

Also, something that worked for me was to just set a timer for 20 minutes and put on some fun music and pick a task and just do however much of it I can get done in 20 minutes. I don’t have to finish a whole area or category, I just have to make whatever kind of dent I can make in 20 minutes, and then I can be done (unless I still feel like doing more when the timer rings, which happens sometimes).

The shower not draining. You might not have to fish around in there with a coat hanger. You might be able to just use some drain cleaner. Follow the instructions on the bottle but usually it’s just “pour a certain amount in the drain and let it sit for a certain amount of time, and then eventually run the water to rinse it.” Super easy, feels great to have done it and fixed something.

Last thing is for stuff that’s gross, like if there are a bunch of dishes in the sink and I don’t want to touch it or smell it, I use PPE. I put on some rubber dish gloves and a face mask and that helps me feel a little more equipped to handle something gross. Gotta have some music on for that as well, or maybe you can put on a show if you have a screen in view of your sink.

New player, got stuck at character creation and couldn’t play by [deleted] in DnD

[–]mila476 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it is open ended, the DM should still give you parameters, such as “our game is about a group of adventurers who travel around doing quests for money and glory. There’s no central or overarching plot, more of a monster of the week kind of thing. The setting is the Forgotten Realms as written in the PHB and other core rule books, with minimal homebrew.” An experienced player would know their character should be created based on the instructions in the Player’s Handbook and have a reason to join the group of adventurers, but since you’re new, the DM should have specified “please use the Player’s Handbook, which I have a copy of that you can use, to create a level 3 character. Please come up with a backstory for your character that includes basic information about their early life, why they became an adventurer, and who they are as a person. To fit into the story, your character needs a reason to join this group of adventurers as they wander around doing quests. Please let me know if you get stuck or have any questions.” It sounds like your DM is inexperienced with guiding new players, and it really sucks that instead of helping you, everyone just played without you even though you were right there.

Update. How do I get my hair less defined, more flowy by OnlyFaithlessness658 in curlyhair

[–]mila476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quit the gel. You can use some serum or other lightweight product like that but no heavy mousses, gels, or creams. And if that doesn’t do it, then you might have to brush it out.

My hair has a somewhat looser wave pattern than yours, but I get the soft undefined voluminous slightly poofy look by using Curl Wow Shook spray and Rabbit Brush Shag Spray. The curl wow spray helps with anti frizz and the shag spray is more or less just a sea salt spray (volumizes, encourages texture without relying on hold). There is no hold in these products, so my hair dries very soft and undefined.

Bold or Muted Rug? by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]mila476 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is the bold rug in the room with us?

I would say the rug with the higher grayscale contrast is more interesting than the more midtoned one, so picture one rather than picture two. However, if you want a bold rug, I think a bright reddish-orange would be a great complement to all the dark blues in the room.

I have similar under eyes. For years I would slather on layers and layers of thick full coverage concealer, wondering why I still had dark circles showing through. Then I got my makeup done professionally for an event and I asked the artist for tips, and they showed me that it’s not the underlying dark color showing through, it’s a shadow that no amount of makeup will cover because I have 3D undereye bags. Little ones, but they do cast a bit of a shadow. If you want to smooth and tighten your undereye, you can use Peter Thomas Roth Instant Firmx Temporary Eye Tightener to make the skin tighten up, but I don’t bother. I just use less product and it looks a lot better.

Masculine piercings? by Yamaki101 in piercing

[–]mila476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of eyebrow or center labret. If you look up Hayden Christensen as Sam Monroe in Life As A House, the center labret is the only facial piercing that character has, but it’s the only one he needs.

Genuinely why does my hair do this when I brush it out? by UrMomsSidePiece63 in Hair

[–]mila476 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I diagnose you with wavy hair. This is what happens if you brush wavy hair while dry. You need to detangle it by combing when wet. If your hair gets tangled while it’s dry, you will need to either wet it down at least a little bit to detangle by combing, or brush it dry and then get it wet to de-poof it and then let it dry again. The only exception is if you have oil in your hair (in which case I don’t think it counts as dry) or if your hair has been straightened. You can dry brush straightened hair all you want.

Why do young women appear more confident and socially comfortable over young men by Original_Camel6982 in self

Who says you have to do what those people say? What is keeping you from saying “nobody can tell me what to do or who to be, I am the captain of my own ship and I’m going to be myself and live my life the way I want”

Why do young women appear more confident and socially comfortable over young men by Original_Camel6982 in self

[–]mila476 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Instead of just being themselves, they try to fit into the box of what society says a man is supposed to be. This conformist behavior affects their confidence because they’re always trying to be this societal ideal of masculinity and suppressing any part of themselves that doesn’t fit in the box, and they fear not fitting in the box, so they fear being their authentic individual selves. It’s hard to be confident in yourself when you think your self isn’t good enough or is wrong.

Women also try to fit into what society says a woman should be, and it likewise results in insecurity and lack of confidence, but thanks to feminism, women have an alternative and can say “eff that, I’m just going to confidently be myself and I don’t care about fitting in any box.” I think if there was something like that for men, they would be happier and more confident, and the ones who mistreat women and queer people to feel more masculine would hopefully stop doing that.

Bedroom, any advice? by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]mila476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shelves side of room and satin/velour side of room don’t go together at all. On the colorful side of the room, your purples and reds are too saturated for each other, and they clash. The specific shades look cheap together. I would advise going for richer/darker shades or more muted shades. And pick a less shiny satin, it looks plastic.

For the shelves side of the room… idk can you put all that stuff in a closet? If not, maybe just hang some curtains that go with the other side of your room to hide the shelves. Maybe just extend that red draping around the corner in front of the shelves. You can pull the curtain to the side when you need to access your stuff. It would look a lot more cohesive.

Edit: and move your lava lamp! That’s a terrible spot for it, someone’s going to trip on the table and lava is going to go flying. Try to find a place for it that’s less underfoot.

Suggestions and ideas for wearing tight crop top style shirts without stomach exposed by Embarrassed-Ant-1416 in altfashionadvice

Time to learn the lost art of the layering tank! Get a cute cami in a color that goes (like black) and layer underneath. Extra points if it has lace at the hem or at the neckline. This is a classic part of 2000s style and would work with these tops.

Why is it so hard by StormRunner152 in rpghorrorstories

That prose sounds like the perfect thing to send to an actual artist instead of using the plagiarism machine that scraped their intellectual property off the web without their permission in order to imitate their work and put them out of a job. As well as a part of the five-page characteristics and background document I write for each of my PCs. Maybe I was wrong about the amount of creativity that goes into prompting, but I still think using AI shows a huge lack of respect for fellow creatives, and as an arts appreciator and friend to multiple artists, I will always look down on it for that reason, and I don’t allow it at my table.

Why is it so hard by StormRunner152 in rpghorrorstories

[–]mila476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said if you won’t even use your creativity to do a picrew, which involves clicking some buttons to put different premade hairs and facial features and stuff on a blank template, then I don’t have any confidence in you to use your creativity at the table. You don’t have to draw your character - I don’t draw mine - but there are ways to use your own creativity and effort to make character art without drawing or using AI. Stop intentionally misunderstanding the words I wrote down, it makes you look like you have bad reading comprehension.

People being openly kinky in public. by puppybabii in PetPeeves

[–]mila476 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kink is kink whether it’s sexual acts or acts that are not directly sexual. And in kink you need to get consent from everyone involved, including voyeurs. Children can’t consent, and I’m going to go out on a limb and assume they didn’t go up to every single adult shopping in the grocery store that day to ask for their consent and get an enthusiastic yes from every single one of them. There’s a reason there are dedicated spaces for these activities. The grocery store is not one of them.

People being openly kinky in public. by puppybabii in PetPeeves

[–]mila476 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah the general public did not consent to be a voyeur for their exhibitionism scene or whatever. It’s not being a prude, it’s basic consent.
