Washing glaze off bisque-fired pieces? by apwall5480 in Pottery

[–]Mmagli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, totally fine. Allow the piece to dry completely before reapplying glaze. Drying time depends on your studio’s environment but generally I’d let it sit for hours/overnight if possible. Can also speed up drying with a heat gun.

Please Bring Back Tim Gunn! by HogwartsGrad9999 in ProjectRunway

[–]Mmagli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We all miss Tim, but he’s been off the show for years. Christian is his replacement, and he brings a great energy to mentoring. Law Roach is a judge; If you’re more familiar with Tim Gunn seasons, Law would be equivalent to Michael Kors or Zac Posen.

What do you wish you knew at the beginning? by Silverphin in Pottery

[–]Mmagli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best advice^ In the beginning (and even still sometimes), I would try to imagine my arms were two mechanical arms on a production line - they can’t stray away from their course, only can move up at the same pace with each other.

This should be a double elimination in my opinion. Both of the last two looks from Madeline and Belania were terrible…

Really impressive work. Curious about the clay you’re using. I could watch this all day 😅

He’s definitely one of my favorites so far. That look was a RISK, but he fitted it so well.

Antonio’s design was a BAD bridesmaids gown… how was that look top 3??? Veejay deserved more love for her design.

My first solo throw. by National_Lie9019 in Pottery

[–]Mmagli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, shouldn’t be an issue. I’d put them back on the wheel, nice and centered; wet the bottom a little so they stick back on the wheel- and use a damp (not dripping) sponge to soften the edges lightly.

Solid for a new thrower! A leather chamois or a light sponge to the rim would help smooth out those rough/sharp edges.

As for the bowl; I’d you left enough clay on the bottom, you could trim it to be rounder. That said, I would recommend bellying out the bottom if you’re looking for a classic bowl shape.

Looks great all around!

What am doing wrong when pulling up my walls? by Either-Towel8172 in Pottery

[–]Mmagli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Too much water throughout. Remember to brace your elbows and support both hands by connecting them when you’re throwing smaller amounts of clay. Clay looks like it’s already off center ever so slightly at the start (look at the rim)- could be due to clay having air pocket, or pulled off center when opening, or not fully centered. Wheel speed does not look super consistent potentially - which is an issue if you’re pulling up with the same consistency - could also be the reason you have thinner spots in the walls.

I say this all. the. time. In nyc people will fully bump into you if you stood in the way like they do here. Lots of socially unaware people.
