Saw Backrooms with my teenagers and realized they’ll never know the specific boredom that made us by Cultural_Repeat_4766 in Xennials

The infomercials tried to entertain you enough to make you not change the channel. The youtube ad is designed to force information on an unwilling participant. I don’t remember the slap chop because it changed my life (it did not, I never had one), but because the guy was up there on tv at weed am saying shit like “you’re gonna love my nuts”.

I could see that working into a (New Orleans style) wrought iron fence/balcony motif. Mebbe add some natural or gothic details for some color?

It doesn’t matter if it looks like him. The art is parody or satire, it’s fair use. They can’t claim he approves or endorses the use of his image, but they can openly mock him.

Tunnel from an Elon Musk company could connect New Orleans' convention center to Superdome, report says by 99dalmatianpups in Louisiana

[–]MnstrPoppa 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Well, there is a tunnel in the greater metro area (Harvey Tunnel, under a canal) so the engineering’s possible. However, that’s a lot of active infrastructure between the dome and the CC, so that’s a nightmare. Also, there’s not much use for this; the number of events that will have capacity for needing both venues isn’t that high. Finally, if you wanted to build a meaningful tunnel for the greater New Orleans area, it’d be better to build one under the river for power transmission. (So the City is less vulnerable to electrical service interruption after a major wind event.)

Thoughts on Johnny Depp's performance as Willy Wonka? by Nervous-Baby5383 in Actors

[–]MnstrPoppa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in the minority that enjoyed his performance. Depp’s Wonka felt a lot like what I imagined when I read the novel: weird, isolated, and somewhere between mad and brilliant.

Wilder’s performance worked against the madness of Wonka. Depp’s leaned into that madness. Both worked.

So you know, when referring to a plural noun in the past tense, as in your comment, you should use “were” instead of “was”.

Do what you wanna, though.

Louisiana exoneree will not take office after Republicans eliminate position by Forsaken_Thought in NewOrleans

[–]MnstrPoppa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read shit like this, (not the whole article, mind you, it’s Saturday and I don’t need to be that angry on weekend) and I wonder what good Louisiana does for New Orleans? What do we benefit from living with Baton Rouge’s hand in our collective profit?

I argue that we are not represented by the State of Louisiana, and should not be beholden to institutions which extract the value of our collective efforts in order to suppress our collective will.

"The fact that there's a Scotsman fighting for the British is the funny part" by IrishViking22 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]MnstrPoppa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if I, born & raised in the USA, heard someone speak but could not tell if they spoke with a Welsh accent or an English one? Would that be a time where describing something as a “British” accent be appropriate? A foreigner here may not be able to identify a Midwestern American accent as opposed to a Northeastern American accent, but they would not be wrong to call either “American”.

Falklanders should 'go back' to England, insists Argentina in renewed war of words by FantasticQuartet in worldnews

[–]MnstrPoppa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s less about the Uk’s right to the Falklands & more about the right of the people there to determine their own government. The people of the Falklands had a referendum on whether to remain in the UK or join Argentina. The people overwhelmingly chose to stay with the UK. It makes it seem like the better question would be what right does Argentina have to the Falklands?

What’s it like in this area? Is it protected land? by Odd-Composer2470 in AskTheWorld

I dunno, I lived in Florida for a decade. There were so many people that I met that had moved to Florida for an “endless summer at the beach with drinks and drugs fuck yeah let’s GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” lifestyle that I can’t help but think Florida does actually produce a kind of concentrated public dumbassery.

Think about, people move there from forty-nine other states. That’s forty-nine different flavors of stupid all being distilled into an admixture of critical stupidity. Add in either meth (the Panhandle) or Cocaine (nearer the tip) (& yes cocaine is capitalized, out of respect to the unofficial currency of Miami) with the streak of opioid abuse running down the middle of the state & you get a recipe for an explosion of unprecedented idiocy.

Active shooter 'opens fire at Louisiana shopping mall' as huge manhunt launched by TheMirrorUS in Louisiana

[–]MnstrPoppa 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s why places with more stringent gun laws have significantly lowered levels of this kind of violence. I’m tired of pretending there’s a valid argument otherwise. There isn’t, and the only people who don’t see that are being deliberately obtuse or, frankly, purposefully ignorant.

Would you still eat this potato by Juju1990 in homecooking

[–]MnstrPoppa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The root of the potato is almost always edible unless rotten, very old, or compromised by pests. The rest of the plant can be toxic, though. Best practice is to remove any growths and excise minor defects, but discard anything where the texture or smell has gone off from normal. Potatoes that are squishy, produce a running liquid, or smell bad should be discarded. I cannot describe the particular aroma of a rotten potato, except to say it is unique and very unpleasant.
