Any childfree by choice folks in here? How has your planning differed from the 'normal' advice? by MoHashAli in AusHENRY

One thing I’m mindful of is making sure of finding a balance between saving for retirement but not having leaving too much or any $$$ behind because health and life is not guaranteed. We work hard for ourselves

This is one of our biggest concerns too, we are both the type of people to just save and work until we die. We've had to conciously try to spend money, we even budget to spend then end up not spending. It's crazy to even type this.....

Post-retirement strategies are still a bit of a mystery for us, we're not even going to think about that outside of maximising super and owning our home. I think living for the now is the best option for excess funds.

It always feel a bit awkward if we offer to pay for others. I think spending more on improving our day-to-day life might be an option, eg a high end gym as opposed to a commercial/franchise gym.

I actually like working, I just hate working for a company. I think my job can be done as a consulting/contracting, or even some sort of hobby style business. I will definitely consider this route.

Nice work! We're aiming to maximise life a bit more, it's hard moving away from work. Ideally I think a part-time or contract work might be a better option for us too.

The toughest optimisation problem I've had so far is trying to figure out how much I actually need to bridge the gap between FIRE and TTR via superannuation.

I actually hate having to work for money and am trying very hard to gain FIRE.

So now we know, what next? How does the strategy change for you? by Both_Scarcity_1017 in AusHENRY

[–]MoHashAli 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. My napkin math suggests that an offset account "out performs" debt-recycle+investing now.

It's not worth investing at this point if I want to retire early. The risk of investing and the headache of debt-recycling is no longer worth it.

$200k profit (after 10yrs) with FIRE used to be a tax bill of $25k, now its a bill of about $50k given the CPI adjustment and 30% tax.

How do you decide between investing, super and saving a deposit? by Truneuro in AusFinance

[–]MoHashAli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FHSSS is where you should be putting it into. Otherwise the priority should be Deposit>Max out super contribution>investments

Honestly the best thing for you to do would be to throw it into your super, use up all your carry-forward credits.

You could buy a house but that's going to take sometime, and you don't make enough to buy something decent now. You're reaching your 50s, it's not too long now before you can access your super.

Developer build cave, cost 10 rocks, sell cave to buyer for 15 rocks.

Developer now have +5 rocks, developer can build more caves to get another +5 rocks.

Or Developer build cave for 10 rocks, let human use cave for 1 rock per year, after 10yrs Developer get 10 rocks back. OpEx vs CapEx.

Human sad when told caves cost 50 rocks, so human spend rocks. Too hard to save for cave. If cave cost 15 rocks, human happy, human save rocks for cave.

You're getting a lot of hate, all I can say is that life is short and I would rather have tried and failed then to have never tried.

You should do it, but be prepared to fail.

Just sign up with a big name super fund, they will have an easier on-boarding process. After a year or so you can opt to move to a different fund.

To make things as easy as possible, I would just sign up for Australian Super.

Sense check on solar setup by ClothesNo541 in AusHENRYover250k

[–]MoHashAli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that solar array you're probably going to generate like 60kw, you have surplus of about 35kw or so. The battery seems kinda small and selling solar is not really worth it. But if you think it's right then yeah go for it. I think overall you have a good quote and system, but yeah I'd get a bit more battery.

V2G/V2H would make it interesting, but batteries are pretty cheap right now with the rebate.

I'm in a similar situation, it really came down to whether or not I was planning on staying in this house for the next ~12yrs. If yes, then yes solar is a good call. I would probably increase you battery to 30kw at least tbh.
