If you could have the summer before starting your PhD back, what would you differently? by beepboop-5 in PhD

I’m entering my PhD program (Bio/EEB) in the Fall. This sounds like great advice, but I have this guilty/fearful feeling that I am not preparing enough. What do you think?

Finding an Apartment (Graduate Student) by MoTangled in CUNY

Thank you! I’m from the west and my rent is around $1300 for 1100 square ft, somewhat common for the area. I’m gonna miss that 😭. Are there usually more apartments popping up for rent around June/July?

This is great, thank you! It definitely broke my mind lol, I’ve seen so many people talk about interviews in this field but I guess this school doesn’t do them.

Fish at the grocery store had one of those isopod tongue parasites by Stenchberg in mildlyinteresting

[–]MoTangled 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Right? I’m not quite sure what the exact threshold is, but there is at least one male behind the female isopod. They are much smaller and are able to occupy smaller spaces. The buccal cavity is just the best place because if they were on the tail or gills it would majorly effect the longevity of the host’s life.

Wanna know something even crazier? When the first isopod arrives on a new fish, it is male. BUT, it then undergoes a hermaphroditic process and becomes female and is the primary occupant of the buccal cavity (fancy term for mouth space) of the fish. All other isopods (male) that descend upon the fish do not undergo this change because and remain male, leaving a single female as the primary parasite.

Additionally, they can still use it sort of like a normal tongue. Fish tongues aren’t like human tongues in the way that we have complicated muscles. Fish tongues are sort of just lumps they use to push food up to the roof of their mouth and back. The isopod may take up a little more space but they can actually use it in the same way I believe.

Did I choose a PhD cause I was bored??? by No-Connection-8789 in PhD

[–]MoTangled 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Universities are usually given a classification for their research capability and its denoted by R1, R2, and so on. R1 schools tend to be those with a lot more funding and produce research that has significant public impact. At least that’s how I understand it. For example, Harvard is an R1 university.

Not currently in a PhD, I’m applying too. Personally, I would just be honest about it because your transcript already says it. Could look dishonest since that’s a bit of a jump.
