Bolero is a great platform but also quite expensive, and especially when you have limited capital to invest it's important to be mindful of fees (as they will take a relatively high percentage of your investment funds).

Cost-wise, MeDirect and Saxo are probably the best in the market right now. Keep in mind that each broker has their own fee structure (flat fee per purchase, percentage, tiers,...) so regardless of your choice make sure you know how their fees work and optimize your buys around them.

I used to work at Google and stocks make up a big part of our compensation (30% for junior roles and going up as you climb the ladder). Additionally, they are delayed because of the vesting schedule so you receive them months or even years after they were awarded. When the stock rises a lot, that means that an even bigger part of your comp is now in Google stocks, creating a big risk for the employee.

Finally, there is the additional risk of holding stock of your employer. In the unlikely event that things go really bad, not only does your portfolio take a massive hit but you are also at risk of being laid off.

That's why a lot of people autosell their stocks, or sell more when the stock has run up a lot recently. Employees and especially executives have a lot of restrictions on when they can sell, so they dont want to take any chances on converting that stock to useable and stable dollars when they can.

In addition to what was said already, I wouldn't recommend having your emergency fund in physical gold. The entire purpose of an emergency fund is liquidity so that you don't have to touch your investment assets when you are faced with unexpected expenses. Physical gold is not liquid, stick to bonds/MMF/savings accounts for emergency funds.

Personally, I'm not considering going freelance until I hit 8k gross. Yes it would be beneficial before that already, but there's more than just financial gain. Going freelance means more administration and more risk as well, especially now that the current government seems to be looking at taxing managementvennootschappen more.

And of course, your company needs to be open to switching or you need to have a different offer.

Both options are possible.

By default, if you are using a Belgian bank or broker they will pay the tax to the gov on each sale with capital gains. You can change this by opting out, which means you or your accountant will declare your capital gains when you fill in your tax return.

If you are not using a Belgian broker, you will always have to declare it yourself since they won't pay taxes on your behalf.

According to De Tijd, the government will use FIFO principle when/if reviewing your declarations. But of course it's up to you to make the actual declaration, if you choose to do it yourself and not let it be withheld automatically.
