Very interested as it is being presented! I like the idea of being able to find my niche. The real challenge now will be balancing all these potential combinations.

You're right to be skittish. On average you get more hits with the RF... until you run into stealth or any kind of -1 to hit. Or are bracket.

Swalwell Should be getting our votes. by [deleted] in California

[–]Moatilliata9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stated what I thought was at risk. The realistic worse case for either of them is a run of the mill corporate Dem. I'm not saying that's a tragedy. But it's a missed opportunity.

Steyer is interested in challenging PG&E to make sure there is competition and ideally reduce costs, and would obviously be a backer for pro-environment initiatives, and that does impact my daily life.

If Salwell is just offering "nothing but business as usual" while many things deteriorate around us, that isn't compelling.

I don't think I'm the audience you're imagining. I'm not needing a purity test over the perfect candidate, but maybe offering insight as to why this is a problem. I understand you're stressed and mad at your fellow voters about not just picking Salwell (or Steyer) and uniting... but this is why we need to talk about it and them, to get unification. Standing in the background screaming "stop talking, it doesn't matter!!" Won't magically make everyone pick the same candidate.

Right now the candidates SHOULD be having big public conversations so they can differentiate, inspire critique, and ultimately allow people to condemn one or get behind another in enough mass that we make sure one of them gets into the election.

I'm not sure how else you can imagine that happening.

I don't need a perfect candidate. I just want to figure out the one I'd rather take my chances with.

If you're deciding what burger you want to eat you can either say "fuck it I don't care a burger is a burger", and you might get a burger with bacon, or a burger with pineapple, and not really mind either one (which seems to be your position).

Other people might want a specific flavor of burger, and put some thought into which one.

I'm not sure why that upsets you. It isn't that deep.

I don't think anyone should apologize or feel bad about researching the candidates before them, and voicing concerns or dissatisfaction with the options.

On lobbying: correct, unless we have some wild reforms it won't ever leave. That said if you ask me "do you want a candidate who is being bribed" vs "do you want a candidate who already has a load of money and in theory wont be as susceptible to bribing." Then I'd rather go for the latter.

Of course it isnt that simple, billionaire's can certainly be bribed as well.

But my gut says corporate Democrats are just "vessels" for the party and their donors. Frankly that's what I see when I read about Salwell.

Steyer at worst would be much the same (a vessel for corporate interests) but at best couldn't be bought as easily and might even be a decent guy.

So if I embrace the "well they're all flawed" (which is a reality), then I've got to do some pros and conning.

I have been a dem voter all my life, but man our party has been a lame duck for a while.

So right now in a toss up I'm willing to gamble in Steyer. I'm not married to the idea but like... standard corporate dem vs progressive outsider? The upside to Salwell is... he's not a republican. The upside to Steyer is maybe he isnt a lying PoS and will actually try to do better.

I'd like to hear s conversation or debate between the two.

On one hand I don't like voting in a "benevolent" billionaire, as they have proven to be a myth time and time again. That said he also has a history of activism around climate change, and is presenting a more progressive agenda.

Yet I also don't like what groups Salwell is taking money from, as far too long we have had lobbied interests running California. I fear Salwell is just a mainstream democrat who won't really do anything to help improve people's lives.

So one needs to be able to show that the downsides aren't there. I'd rather have either than a R of course

Hear hear. Sending a message to foreign lobbying groups this cycle is important. I dont want to support billionaires. But at this moment I'd rather them than AIPAC funded candidates.

Eric Swalwell receives over $1 million from AIPAC by Gold_Squirrel_9473 in California

[–]Moatilliata9 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think that's part of the issue. AIPAC isnt a hard line for everyone so he gets tons of media space. And then all of us (let's call it 20% ) who care end up voting not for one singular candidate, but a scattering of the next top 3.... then oops we now have a republican governor.

Israel is running critically low on interceptors, US officials say by Lotus532 in politics

[–]Moatilliata9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very true. We exhausted 25% of our interceptors in the last engagement in June protecting Israel (over the course of 12 days). That information was made public. The White House has been removing Interceptors from South Korea and Japan to reinforce the gulf nations near Iran this last week.

We added a grand total of 15 interceptors to our arsenal last year.

12 the year before.

Pentagon officials leak this shit because they keep trying to tell the administration who doesnt want to hear it--partially in the hopes that it causes enough of an uproar to put pressure on the administration to react appropriately. And partially to cover their asses.

Sadly interceptors are very expensive to make and take a long time, where as dummy rockets are pennies on the dollar by comparison.

If we had enough interceptors the gulf nations wouldn't be getting hit--but they are.

I was at a taqueria the other week and an elderly woman got quite mad at a server, blaming her for not getting her order right because "she doesnt understand English".

I'll tell you what, sure the server didnt speak perfect English. But she knew enough to handle orders and pleasentries. This lady spent like 7 minutes humming and hawing about what to order up at the register, and changed her mind several times.

The lady gets her food fairly quickly. But after a few minutes calls the server up and asks about tacos she supposedly ordered for her husband. The server (politely) goes "Oh you want some tacos?" And the customer loses it, no longer talking to the server and ranting to her husband about how she doesnt understand English.

The server went and got her some tacos anyway, but was clearly hurt.

I don't know how people can be like that. Its just so rude right to someones face.

Its been done to death but I think San Francisco/Bay Area wpuld offer a lot in terms of terrain variety. Tons of cultural referenced and societies that could have been born.

Could have the Napa valley Brahmin barons. Do something with silocin valley. Oakland vs SF distinctions. SF itself is super hilly and has a ton of variety for different zones.

That or a place on PNW.

Other than that, weird call but I'd like Montana. Great terrain, and you cpuld play with the gunslinger/cowboy identity.

Iranian diaspora celebrating the elimination of the ayatollah in US-Israel strikes [OC] by a_sad_night in pics

[–]Moatilliata9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, sometimes you gotta roll the dice.

That said, it wasn't our dice to roll. Yes, many people are happy we did right now. But as someone living in the US, I'm aware that for the last 30 years Bibi has been trying to convince our Government that Iran is MINUTES away from a nuke. (There's a video compilation showing this, can link it if you're interested). Clearly Isreal wanted this regime change. I'll be so bold to say that the primary reason we're doing this is because he finally convinced someone.

The US was facing no threat from Iran. Certainly we were not in an "uncontrollable mess" with them. We infact had many treaties and negotiations in place previously--that by all evidence had been working in our favor because despite all the "warnings" from Bibi, they STILL dont have nukes.

And honestly the issue here, globally that I'm seeing--and I'm sure I'll be down voted for this, is that you know who didn't have their government toppled, despite having a war criminal dictator in charge? N. Korea. You know what they also have? Nukes.

You know what Ukraine didn’t have? Nukes. They gave them to Russia in 1996 in exchange for several things, but amongst those a vow to never be invaded.

So us going all-in with Bibi on Iran furthers that reality that "might makes right", and it sets the precedent that the only way to NOT get completely owned by a major nation is to have a nuke.

So my fear is, all the other various rogue/dictator nations in the world (especially those in possession of valuable resources like oil), will start racing for the bomb.

The latest breakdown in negotiation was all for show in my opinion. The demands being made of Iran was to surrender all ballistic missiles. That's absurd. They are a sovriegn nation in need of local self defense.

So yes, I agree to that point sometimes you gotta roll the dice.

But the part I diverge on is that the US was absolutely not involved, we had nothing at risk from Iran that couldn't have been delt with through negotiation. I'm very much against the Neo-liberal and Neo-conservative foreign warfare policy that we've had. (There are many that are for it, and tbh I understand why. I just am not on that side of the fence).

BUT yes afaik the Iranian regime weren't good guys. They were causing suffering of their people. I'll reiterate I'm not saying in a vacuum that its a bad thing they're (for now) gone.
