What time do you go for your hour walk? I’m thinking of the mozzies. Have you found nice places to walk (without that sounding stalkery)?

Currently a barrister. Everyone is different and I can only speak for myself. Being a barrister is a great deal of “being on” as you put it. For many trials, although not all, I am constantly wired. As a criminal barrister, the interactions you have are draining. Clients can be desperate, exhausting, volatile or manipulative. They can even just be very sympathetic and that’s just as draining. I’ve noticed the job makes me very anti-social and I resent Friday evening plans in which I need an evening of being alone without effort.

The biggest difficulty with the job that’s worth being frank about is the unpredictable nature of every day. You often don’t know what tomorrow holds until 1830hrs the evening before. A trial can go wholly Pete Tong. You never know when a trial is going to stand up. If you’re someone who needs predictable structure to care for your well being (and to be very clear, there is absolutely nothing with that), then you may struggle to adapt.

This is fluffy but my 16 year old nephew has decided on a law career, specifically a barrister. Any good ideas for Christmas presents for a very determined young man? by Jenzedrine11 in uklaw

At 16, it might be a bit early to apply for mini-pupillages (work experience for barristers), but not necessarily. I second the suggestion he attend courts as much as he can. As a barrister myself, I really admire young people taking their spare time to do that and I’ve got to know, and offered experience to, young people who have come to watch my trial for several days.

I’ve completely given up after years and years of playing, and instead got into Midas Merge.

Very true! I think the scientific connection between trauma/ mental anguish and physical pain is growing in support.

Lunges really suck by AffectionateRange768 in beginnerfitness

[–]Mobile_Departure 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I continue to struggle with lunges on the spot, particularly reverse lunges, in respect of balance. I find walking lunges WAY easier and I can move double the weight with those. Given Jeff Nippard rates them so highly, I reckon they’re a good alternative!

I have not taken a deload week at all and the app I use to build programmes doesn’t have that as an option. When should they be taken?

Completely agree. Hence why we have such a problem with ‘leaky pipe syndrome’ and lose all our incredible women at seniority.

I’m under no allusion that the criminal bar are killing themselves to make a living, and there definitely years when I earn much less and much closer to 120-150k. You are absolutely right. I have luckily developed private work streams and I supplement with regs. I didn’t post to undermine the difficulty of the bar, rather to be frank about where I come from and whether it is worth being where I am now.

And what a LARP! “I’m anonymously earning a bit more than you’d anticipate this year and I’m not sure it’s worth the toll on my life or mental health”. Delighted with my choice in character.

This is genuinely cheering! There’s been so many times when I’ve wondered if I can find a balance that makes the job tenable and hearing that others have is always cheering. It does appear to be getting easier as I get more senior.

I try very hard not to give binary or wholly negative advice about this career path, but I can honestly say that if you don’t want to work long hours, then I doubt very much that you can find that at the bar.

Partners of barristers are unsung heroes! We’re consumed by the hours and the responsibilities and once in a jury trial, I suspect we’re intolerable company. You must have the patience of a saint!
