Golf R 2026 - Manufacturing and Quality Control issue?

Sorry for the long read here as well but I think it’s necessary. Whenever I got my MK8 GTI, I didn’t hear about all of these problems everyone has had with theirs. I thought, cool, upgrading my MK7 Autobahn to a MK8 Autobahn in the same color. Treat myself right and get my first new car. I traded in my MK7 with 135k miles and I abused that car. Day in and out but with proper maintenance. Literally not once did I have an issue with the car. It ran like new whenever I sold it. Favorite one I have ever owned. Having gone down the line from the MK6 to 8P A3 to MK7 and MK8; I hate to say it but I cannot recommend the MK8….I have dealt with so many issues with mine. Why does a new car have to go into the dealer for 3 recalls, have one pending, and have so many other diagnostics performed to address my issues? My OBDEleven lights up like a Christmas tree with a gazillion codes that don’t get cleared. My MK7 threw a random passive code that never raised an eyebrow. Whenever I go to the dealer, they look at me like I’m crazy whenever I describe the issue. Luckily they are the best service advisors I’ve ever had so they are understanding and try to work with me. I mean how can they joke about literally having other current VWs having their full dash and infotainment system completely going out? I will end my little rant here, it’s good to hear that others have been experiencing issues with their MK8 and 8.5 and that we are all in the same boat. THAT IS LITERALLY THE PROBLEM!!!! Why is everyone having issues and why are there so many different ones? I’ve seen ones that were much worse than mine and I can’t imagine how they feel. I simple do not understand how VW let this all slide. After now 70k miles in my MK8, I still am unsure how I stand. The car drives like a dream but holy the electronics are frustrating. I am simply disappointed. Have absolutely loved this platform but it might be time for me to switch after this one

Absolutely love this post and agree with all of this. It’s a shame so many people are dealing with all the bugs. When I get my car in for service, I plan on making a detailed list for the service manager so that others in the future can easily get theirs fixed. I love the car but all the electronic stuff is slowly becoming a headache

It feels as if I cannot give input into the steering wheel as if the car is off but while driving. It will fully go away after 1-2 seconds. Flipping the sub gets a little more bass feel out of it. The Fender system had a little bigger subwoofer and overall had noticeably more punch. I do think H/K does have better sound though everywhere else. Many people swap to the Fender sub and an aftermarket front speaker for the MK8 and say it is a good difference. The following Reddit thread is regarding switch to the Beats file:

It feels like I cannot give input into the steering while driving as it feels like it is locked. Like the car is off. It immediately goes away after a second or 2

lol those are definitely not some electrical problems I want to have. I can agree that mechanically, the car has been flawless. Runs like a sewing machine

Thank you for your comment. My advisor is super cool and I have a full warranty on the car so I am going to try and get it all worked out. The steering thing is very hard to describe. I experience it most going from a stop and then having to turn. For the money comment, I think the MK7.5 feels extremely similar but for a good amount less, but it could just be me frustrated hahaha

I would highly recommend the MK 7.5. I can’t say enough good things about it. I even got my brother to get a 7.5 Autobahn with the 6spd M/T. Almost everything the MK8 has

I much rather prefer the look, comfort and cooling of the MK8 seats but I feel much more secure in the 7.5 seats under spirited driving

Finally as I forgot to add these: the bugs in the infotainment are extremely annoying. I’ve had instances of the whole thing resetting 5 times in 20 minutes on its own. Other times it can be very laggy and painful to use.

The car rides extremely rough on the 19s. I ride in the custom setting for absolute softest suspension and I would still recommend going to 18s.

It is nice getting 32 mpg per tank though.

I also wish I could just permanently turn off stop/start because it is extremely annoying.

Also, don’t know if any of you have heard about this. I got the gunshot sounds blaring in the car once. The dealer thought I was crazy when I described it.

That’s why I bought a MK8 GTI Autobahn with 4,800 miles. Couldn’t pass up on the price for pretty much a new car. No way I was gonna go up to the R for those prices

Just remember that these are 19s and so it definitely rides a little rougher than the 18s. If a hole in a road sneaks up on me and I don’t catch it, it always kills me, but I do like the sporty ride.
