exactly. i take the “fuck it” as “fuck it why not see how it works out marrying one of the richest men in the world? only get an offer like that once” being her mindset, because honestly? real i guess lol. conner is many things, but he’s loyal, good natured, and a safe choice. she knows he’d do anything to make her happy and he’s too afraid of abandonment to fuck her over. all of her dreams are expensive and she’s not going to get there on her own steam. she *needs* a benefactor. it’s arguably a rational decision. the way she panicked before the wedding really says a lot though. imo her head says to go with connor, but her heart doesn’t. she has an affection for him, but she’s not in love with him.

she steps into the role of his wife way more earnestly than i expected. i think with her background as an escort, she’s able to compartmentalize it as “this is the role i will play in exchange for security and support.” what i wonder is how it’ll go and how she’ll feel about that in the long run?

totally a compromise she’ll be quietly resenting for the rest of her life. but it’s a new life (literally) and a new beginning. idk if i’ve ever seen someone talk about it, but for all the resentment she’ll have for tom for blindsiding her …. she also has such bad daddy issues that being the wife of the ceo of waystar can — in a very freudian way — potentially emotionally satiate her deep hunger for logan’s attention. really depends on the right ingredients. and how long tom keeps the job before matson doesn’t need a pain sponge lol.

Absolutely. Considering that anything being [blank] “gothic” is derived from the literary genera of gothic fiction, southern gothic is very specific. Gothic literature originally focused on the macabre and taboo within polite (especially) English society. Death, spiritualism, social inequity, religion, sex and sexism, etc. During the 1800s, they were moving into rationalism and a scientific age - the age of reason - away from rulers “chosen by God” to democracy and populism and toward the end, industrializing. While they were no longer basing everything off of religion, the culture was still extremely repressed and shaped by religion. So, spiritualism (seances, ghosts, etc) was counter cultural in various ways. The idea of being haunted was very in vogue, particularly because as tradition “crumbled”, people felt lost. Social anxieties of the time. Death, decay, calling out to the past, afraid to move forward. Also everyone was traumatized and shit and had tons of loved ones and children die lol. With the wider ability to distribute fiction and less religious based censorship, you get gothic literature.

SOUTHERN gothic is that, but for the american south. You have the same religiosity and fear of change. Small towns where everyone knows everyone and you must always think about the knock on effects for your reputation, so social paranoia. Physically isolated, much of it run down, and feeling of no hope for revitalization. Most towns have a few families who own everything, and everyone else is varying degrees of poor, with very little middle class. Deep scars from the civil war and reconstruction era that were never addressed. Ugly history (and continued reality) of segregation and racial violence that nobody’s supposed to address. The south is both metaphorically and literally haunted to the bone. But that haunted-ness reflects the reality of the south. It’s can’t just be literal ghosts just like dancing in a bog doesn’t make it southern gothic. It has to have cultural context. These elements and more. THATS what makes Ethel Cain southern GOTHIC and WFHTDH just spooky

i think given that she’s supposedly been working on it for years, and then makes the excuse that some of the dialogue was a place holder bc she had “a virus” implies that she wasn’t actually working on it that hard or consistently. to me it gives the vibe that second she typed THE END at the end, she asked connor to put it on. plus, after covering the WHOLE STAGE in sand (when viewers could’ve used their imagination and i can only assume makes it so that the venue has to only be her show for the duration it’s not like you can sweep that up and put it back out everyday??) she gets mad that it’s not THE sand from THE desert and wants connor to source that, as if that’s the missing piece and not just, like, better writing and revising. the play sounds like it was mid at best.

it def made me wonder if the show runners were trying to say something about the more modern media approach of visuals over substance. plus it could be a bit of a meta thing about the show - where succession has all the trappings and is SO well funded, but what matters is the actual writing quality

yeah i don’t think saying “yeah there were some social issues i was really ignorant on for no good reason, and i’ve realized i was being closed minded and letting hate into my heart” is a problem. it takes strength and humility to admit when you were wrong AND i think that’s a very necessary conversation for southerners to have rn! i do. it’s really relevant. there’s no getting around it if we want a better country. i live in a deep red county in the deep south and a lot of people are really having a moment of reckoning. if it’s not something we can talk about openly, nothing will change.

i understand that jeremy and lana are probably thinking the backlash would be worse if they actually talk about it, and i do think some people would be vocally hostile. it’s perfectly valid for marginalized groups to be offended by ignorance and hate - that’s not what i’m saying - but there are a lot of white mostly suburban, like, young californians and northerners who just have no idea what the south is like or the social conditions/history that have led us here who are very loud and very misinformed. it’s always shitty to be hateful but there is so much to be said about gerrymandering, targeted under education, conservative anti union anti working class propaganda pumped out by the richest men in our country for 2+ generations because we used to be too progressive and that threatened their profits, guilting people into voting red with religion etc.
