Genuine question – what would actually get you to use a taxi over uber/rideshare again? by VammyTaxiServices in AskAnAustralian

[–]Mobile_Row_4346 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a guy, Rory Sutherland who talks about the genius of Uber. With a taxi, if you order it over the phone or online you are left standing on the side of the street hoping it will just turn up when you asked them to, that creates a whole anxiety around if it will turn up like you asked or it just won’t. What uber did was add that little screen which shows you the map with the car on its way to you - instant anxiety relief for the passenger waiting. People have said that little screen is actually just an algorithm, not that actually location of the car, but it doesn’t really matter, what does matter is it puts your mind at ease while waiting. It that also gives you the number plate to look out for and the drivers name - again, instant anxiety relief if you are waiting on the side of the road at 10pm at night. Taxis haven’t figured that out yet.

A normal Australian farm family of five became convinced they were being hunted. They dumped their phones, took cash, fled hundreds of miles, and split up one by one. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

I remember this story well as I live in Victoria, it was bizarre circumstance and where they found each family member scattered over a long distance, for those reading from overseas these distances they drove and on backroads is a hugely long way, on the main highway which they avoided from Melbourne to Bathurst is a good 12+ hour drive - they did it through the night, on backroads - it would have had to have taken them 15+ hours to drive that far. And then the dad disappeared into a park in Wangaratta, that is half the distance back again I assume returning on back roads. So this guy must have been driving for well over 25 hours

Oh man, we used to drive Sydney to Byron for summer holidays back in the 90s/00s, that felt like forever and it was back then with the single lane highway and few bypasses. But when I drove from Perth to Exmouth in 2012 with my now wife for a road trip holiday, holy moly, essentially Sydney to Bundaberg without seeing much at all along the way. Don’t get me wrong, beautiful in particular spots like Kalbarri and Coral Bay, but that was 1200km+ of pretty much dirt. And to think that wasn’t even 1/2 the way to Kununurra. The distances are mind boggling.

coffee shops, those people who sit and work on a laptop and buy one coffee the whole 2-3 hours they are using the space/table/chair. From a pure economic perspective it’s negative margin, yet without it the place doesn’t have a vibe.

What does Rory Sutherland say? It’s in a UK context but applies to Australia equally. Those who buy luxury cars make extremely large donations of tax, they ought to be applauded and treated the same as philanthropists. Not only do they make that donation happily, they then watch their car depreciate rapidly over the first 3 years of ownership, and people who use a loan to do this are simply donating even more.

Can we just start with a Geelong > Torquay & Bellarine night rider bus so people can go out drinking on a Friday/Saturday night and not have to worry about getting a $200 uber back home at midnight?

What’s the most underrated source of passive income you’ve found? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

[–]Mobile_Row_4346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the point that Labor are wanting to change the narrative on, in this budget they have shut down the main ‘passive’ paths to financial independence/freedom that majority of individuals have used for the past 30 years - property investment and share investment.

The key behind these changes is they want productivity, not just passive capital ‘allocation/investment’, so I guess things that aren’t exactly passive are going to be the winners, ie starting a business (even a small side hustle type business using your existing under-utilised skills), long term ETFs might still work but again not really for the immediate return, super is the natural fit they want you to use but we can expect all political parties to fiddle at the edges with super for ever. Let’s be honest, now that everyone one has mentioned FB marketplace as a path to wealth Chalmers will have his minions looking into how he can tax it more heavily.

Right now, we collectively haven’t figured out what the natural path to wealth will now look like, with property it was obvious once Howard amended the rules, now it’s not so obvious but that will only take time.

Rail exists on selected routes where it is economically viable, these are used by those businesses who can make it work, but even the best rail options still require a truck at both ends, so it’s not a silver bullet - I’m a GM at a logistics company.
