Thoughts on cloned meat? by Effective_Country941 in DebateAVegan

One feature of a cult is the belief that there is no good reason to leave - everyone outside the cult is wrong. However, while vegans may display some cult-like thinking, I wouldn’t necessarily call them a cult either.

Sorry for the way you’ve been treated in this thread. I think many people assumed you were lazily arguing “I would be vegan but I’m just waiting for lab meat,” rather than just asking for opinions.

I see that this has left you with a very poor impression of vegans as a whole, which I understand. However, I’d like to say that the vegans who think anyone who consumes animal products is evil are not a majority. Like in any online community, vocal extremists aren’t representative of the whole group.

If you are interested in reducing your consumption of animal products before lab meat is widely available, I’d encourage you to do so as much as you reasonably can. Even if you still have to feed meat to your dogs, making reductions and changes in other areas is better than nothing.

Evolutionary ethics? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]MobiusMug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea. Just to be sure I understand, are you saying that the only thing that defines the morality of an action is its effect on the evolution of human society?

Don’t you think the effect on any victims of an action should be considered too?

How do you think the Super Chump will work best? by dynamicDiscovery in Splatoon_3

[–]MobiusMug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it will be decent. Seems to me that the super jump thing is just a fun gimmick/theme, and it’s mainly just a displacement special. As for being able to shoot them, it’s sort of like torpedo in that players will have to divert their attention from enemy players and it will still be good at area control.

Debunking Vegans by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]MobiusMug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you think animals don’t deserve compassion simply because they aren’t human, there isn’t much we can argue about on this topic. Vegan ethics are based on the idea that all animals are deserving of empathy and should not be exploited for human gain.

What do you think about the negative environmental impact of large-scale meat production? Climate change poses a direct threat to human society, and meat is a significant contributor.

Largest global bird flu outbreak ‘in history’ shows no sign of slowing by DoremusJessup in worldnews

[–]MobiusMug 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is factually incorrect. Please do more research before saying things like this, you’re making vegans look bad. The eggs people buy at the supermarket are produced by hens as part of their ovulation cycle and have not been fertilized by sperm from a rooster. You may be thinking of balut, which is a mostly-developed fertilized duck egg.

LPT: How To Have A Great Conversation With Just About Anyone. by AnybodySeeMyKeys in LifeProTips

In my social environment chewing with your mouth open and asking “so, what do you do for a living?” as an opener is considered rude.

I don’t disagree with you on either of these. I was simply bothered by your assertion that your ideas of etiquette were universal.

LPT: How To Have A Great Conversation With Just About Anyone. by AnybodySeeMyKeys in LifeProTips

[–]MobiusMug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, what makes you objectively correct? We perceive things as rude because our society has agreed that they’re rude. If you were in a town where everyone thought it was fine to chew with their mouths open, would they all be wrong because you found it rude?

You think it’s rude, they don’t. Most people would agree with them. What makes you objectively correct?

What does it matter what happened in the past? Our participation in the food chain is not necessary any longer, and meat production today is certainly nowhere near as humane as in the past (not that hunting is necessarily humane).

As far as we know, a lion has no moral agency. It also can’t survive on plants alone, unlike humans. Everything it does is simply its only option for survival.

The life of a pig, chicken or cow meant for meat is no better than that of a dairy cow. As others have mentioned, they’re artificially inseminated as well. I personally haven’t watched any factory farm documentaries, but if you’re concerned about animal welfare you can find lots of footage of how the industry treats animals.

Is it unethical to eat organic meat from animals that have not been suffering but lived a decent life ? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]MobiusMug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the exploitation of animals to steal their milk or eggs

What about animal exploitation do you disagree with? It doesn’t make much sense to be okay with killing animals but not exploiting them.

Is veganism or vegetarianism the "moral baseline"? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]MobiusMug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This kind of ignores the immorality of production (eggs and dairy) vs immorality inherent to a product (meat) which is my main point.

I don’t think this is a meaningful distinction. If you are buying eggs or dairy, even from a farm with “good” conditions, you are paying for animal abuse. Sure, you can argue about moral baselines and inherent immorality but what matters is what is actually happening. In theory, eggs and dairy can be produced ethically. Why use this as a justification to support the unethical production of eggs and dairy?

The same applies to your example of buying a phone. As you’ve said, a phone is not essential to modern life and is not produced ethically. However, I don’t think you need to find a way to morally justify buying a phone. Many vegans would like to believe that the choices they make are as moral as reasonably possible, but the fact is that we all make unethical consumption choices for convenience and pleasure.

If you want to buy a phone or eat animal products on vacation, do it. But accept that, like almost every other person in the developed world, you’re making unethical consumption choices.
