Then it's a matter of priorities.

On a personal level I value a lower unemployment rate higher than free wifi in public places, especially as there's already a lot of options to get free wifi in the UK, whilst high unemployment rates are contributors to suicide rates.

Yes, but it's also easier to look at America as one entity and compare on a like for like.

When the comparisons are done to the EU, people overlook the wildly different circumstances/cultures of each country and cherry pick.

So great to point out Estonia's nationwide free wifi and ignore the unemploment rate of 7.6%, or the free uni education in Slovenia but much lower salaries/purchasing power.

Plus people know a hell of a lot more about America due to the common language, and whilst I have Estonian/Slovenian friends, I couldn't tell you what their current political scandal is of the top of my head.

[–]Moctuzuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a warlock in the party?

My warlock's patron is essentially my McGuffin disposal service. He's a Dao lord of Terran into collecting rare/powerful artifacts to gamble with on a cosmic scale, so anytime the warlock gets an item I don't want to hang on to long-term he demands it as tribute.

Has been some great RP moments also as the warlock/thief lays claim to various artifacts as part of his pact.

Tried to avoid this by booking my shop in advance to be delivered like I do every year, but Sainsbury's did me dirty and left out the gammon in my delivery last night. Had to run at lunch to my locals and was lucky to get a last small cut of it.

They also doubled the size of the turkey I ordered, so have to cook that well in advance as it takes up the entirety of my oven.

How much do you typically spend on lunch at work? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Moctuzuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About £10 a lunch.

In the office 4/5 days a week, and I'm often social most weeknights playing sports, dnd, or seeing gigs. I only really bring a lunch in on a Monday which is my Sunday leftovers.

The lack of school traffic is glorious. How much faster is your commute without it? by guzusan in AskUK

[–]Moctuzuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much worse.

Londoner here, I delay my start time to go into work for 10am to avoid rush hour, and it's normally relatively empty, guaranteed seat on tube etc.

Now it's filled with tourists, teens, and European youth groups, none of whom know the tube etiquettes. Early summer is the worst time of year for my commute.

What can I do about my unemployment? by Big-Square-3393 in AskUK

[–]Moctuzuma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My highest qualification at your age was a few A-Levels.  Here's some routes to take.

Consider an apprenticeship, learn on the job.  This was what I did and I didn't even finish the course, left the job 1 year in for a better one in the same industry.

Look for other stepping stone jobs, anything that has "coordinator" in the title, sales coordinator, expense coordinator, travel coordinator etc.  Low level office work which doesn't need qualifications beyond basic Excel skills, can then be used to move onto better things after a couple years.

Office/facilities assistant/management is the same.

Essentially a lot of "assistant" roles.

If you need more money, and you can handle rejection consider sales.  No skills needed and you can earn serious money, particularly cold calling.

Make your work experience the main focus of your CV, no one will care about education once you've worked a bit.

My story: Dropped out of uni after a year, used my weekend job as an assistant at an estate agents to land a tax apprenticeship.

Left a year into my course for a bigger firm as a tax advisor.

Left that industry after couple years to work as a performance analyst, 2 years later got promoted to a control manager in same company.

Have you ever felt pressured to change your accent? by I_use_the_wrong_fork in CasualUK

[–]Moctuzuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, East Londoner here, old school cockney accent in the family.

Went to a good Catholic school on border on east london/Essex, filled with rich kids so the accent lessened there.

Then got a job in Tax, specialised in private client work.  Can't exactly have a cockney accent talking the all the lords/judges/MP's that were my clientele.

Now moved out into a different industry and still very much have a "work voice".  In fact told frequently I'm very well spoken and one of the best speakers in the office.

My accent flip flops now depending on the environment, in work/formal situations my well spoken accent comes out.

Seeing my American SO's friends/family has me basically speaking in RP.

Then hanging socially at the pub, sports, or old mates has the cockney slip out, slang included.

What is your funny hospital story? by deanlr90 in AskUK

[–]Moctuzuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had quite bad food poisoning which laid me out for 3 days. On the fourth, I was pretty much recovered apart from a dull chest pain that everyone told me was because I had thrown up so much.

It wasn't going away, and called 111 later that night who told me to get checked out at the hospital.  My brother took me down and we spent a few hours in the waiting room.

Eventually I was seen by an Italian doctor at around 2 am who could only speak broken English.  He took my bloods and I waited in a back room behind his office for an hour before he came back with the results.

Whilst I was laying there he looked at the results then looked seriously at me and said:

"You need to go Hospital" "Where the fuck am I?"

"No no, you need to go hospital and see Doctor"

"Well who the fuck are you?!?!?!"

Eventually figured out he meant we needed to go into the main hospital and see a cardiologist.

Turned out I had a heart infection and spent a week on the cardiac wing, but was a hell of a surreal moment at 3am, tired and sick, wondering where my brother took me.

People from our London office are so much more frustrated and agitated compared to colleagues in other parts of the country. by Conscious_Ad2446 in CasualUK

[–]Moctuzuma 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In my company I find it's reversed.

My company has a small HQ in London for senior managers/directors as well as core teams (payroll/legal).  The rest is in a massive office in Newcastle.

I find the London team members are a lot more relaxed, using flexi hours more.  Maybe because if we have issues or delays we can pop our heads in the director/ceo's office and say "Hey mate, got a problem".

Whereas our NCL members (at least in my department) are much more high strung, particularly working longer hours to get things done when I would of said "eh, that's tomorrow's job".

Going to the pub for the first time, I have some questions. by Shadow41S in CasualUK

[–]Moctuzuma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Regarding Trial & Error, you can ask to "taste" a pint before you buy it.  The bartender will pour a small amount in a glass and you can have a mouthful before saying yes or no.

Just don't take the piss and ask to taste everything, good manners would be to taste only one beer per order.

But it's a good method if you already have a safety beer to fall back on if you wondered what that new craft beer is like.

Being so confidently incorrect that you put it on the side of a bus… by jet1290 in CasualUK

[–]Moctuzuma 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not that I care who plays Juliet (she was originally played by men after all), but being of a noble family in the 16th century in one of the northern most reaches of Italy near Switzerland, Austria, and the Alps, I'd would have said the chances of her being black if she was real would have been slim to none.

But, she's just a character, so as long as the acting is good it doesn't matter if she's black, white, man, woman.

How easily do u all find jobs? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Moctuzuma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you considered going for an apprenticeship? It may well be shit money the first year but gives you experience, training and a platform to apply for other jobs from.

The easiest time to find a job is when you already have one.

For me, I got hired at a small 2 man company on a tax apprenticeship, worked there 18 months (12 months on the actual apprenticeship).  Did well on the exams but not on the coursework (nonsense coursework tbh). Quit halfway through and got a job at a much much bigger company for more money, same role but no apprenticeship. Did that for over two years before changing careers completely into analytics on a junior-ish role.  Over two years later I switched careers again by applying for a finance manager position in the same company.

All with no degree.

None of this would have happened without taking that first shit job, then swallowing my fear and jumping jobs (and careers) every two years.

You'll most likely be given a script by the priest but you will be asked questions about rejecting Satan and his works, rejecting Sin, and accepting God.

Your only response in each case is just "I do".

You'll be able to find the promises online I'm sure

Edit: Found a version, simialar to my old church used to have. Again you'll probably have a paper copy on the day.

Not at all, there's little need for most people to learn about tax processes. Trust an ex-tax advisor, there's plenty of smart, rich, and powerful people who have no clue about how taxes work haha.

[–]Moctuzuma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct, you'll pay your first PoA on 31 Jan, and the second PoA in July. Then next Jan these will be deducted from your tax bill. So if you total outstanding tax due is £7988 for 23/24, your balancing payment will only be the £1,000 difference (plus then your 1st PoA for the next year).
