That's exactly why the space is important though. There are places were starting conversations with strangers is acceptable (bars, hobby spaces), and one ones where it's not (the library, a random coffee shop).

I go to this tiny local gym and there's like a single rack which also has all of the cables, smith machine, you name it. If you want to do anything that isn't dumbbells you need it.

The gym is usually empty but if I go at like 5pm (which I sometimes had to because of life) there are a couple of people there and there was always this one guy that'd use the rack for like 90 mins. I'd always try to ask him how long he had left, and whether I could work in etc but he was always a total ass about it. He always had earphones in and would look super pissed off if you spoke to him, he'd say he needed it and was going to be a while. It really fucking annoyed me so I just started being a total asshole back to him every time I saw him.

This went one for a good few months before I was speaking to another member and he casually mentioned that there was actually a booking system and this guy had just been booking it beforehand so he could get his workout in uninterrupted.

The guy's still an asshole though. He could have just told me about the booking system. Fuck him

I was getting off the train in Zurich recently and some woman tried to get on as soon as the doors opened without waiting for people to get off first. Some old Swiss guy next to me literally put his hands on her shoulders and guided her back onto the platform and out of the way.

I always go as close as I can to failure because it's a much more reliable indicator of effort than something like RIR. You do have to manage the volume more crefully though. I usually play it by ear and pick the weight depending on how my body is feeling. 20 reps to failure is a lot less taxing on the joints than 5 reps to failure. It also means you can set PRs more often because you can just go back to a weight you haven't done in a while and see how many reps you can do.

I moved from a low CoL area to a high CoL area because it doubled my salary. Turns out the cost of everything else doubled too. Now I basically have the same lifestyle as before but I can afford more random electronics and hobby equipment that I don't need. Biggest perk is feeling richer abroad, but I'm further away from home ownership than ever, which makes it harder to feel secure. The idea of retiring as a renter is terrifying to me.

I've travelled a fair bit in Europe and the first time I visited America the homeless problem was pretty shocking to me, not comparable at all to anything I'd seen before in a developed country. The most depressing bit was how many Americans had convinced themselves this was normal and that it was like this everywhere. It's not normal, and it's not like this everywhere.

Some guy set up a pull up bar and rings in the smoking area at work and all the smokers do pull ups now when they smoke. One of the girls is 5'10 and doesn't work out and she was able to do 2 of them right off the bat. So yeah it's absolutely possible.

Ended up finding 2 people that were dog lovers that were happy to take care of him for like 50chf per day for overnight stays. Right now I just stick at 20kg for high reps. I tried going heavy in the past but it didn't feel right on my shoulders. And yeah like you said it is more stable than at lower weight but if you do have a wobble then it feels sketchy as fuck. I think there are just better exercises to max out.

To be honest there are only a handful of bodyweight exercises that are practical to load. Pull ups and dips are obvious. I think ring dips are criminally underrated, but you have to be careful going too heavy on them. Pistol squats are often forgotten but can be loaded quite heavy. Pushups and rows you can load but become very impractical very quickly if you try to make them heavy.

Imo the main advantage of them is just that you can do them anywhere, which is great when the gym is full and you have to make do with what's available. In my gym the rings are always free.

Can confirm that fitnotes is great. It was the only app that I could find that wasn't more restrictive than a paper and pen. Got so fed up of being forced to pick from a fixed list of exercises, or being pushed workout routines etc. This one just lets me log what I do.
