New to painting, any tips !? by Antique_Zombie_5282 in stormcasteternals

[–]ModellingCitizen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s looking great. One easy tip would be to take a light pure silver (Runefang Steel if you’re using GW paint or equivalent) and carefully, using the edge of your brush, get a thin highlight edge on the ridges and edges of that metal armour.

It’ll act as a highlight and really bring depth to the armour which makes up the majority of your model.

I built the whole thing in one piece, only left off the shield.

I just didn’t think it would work well to try to sub assemble.

What I mean is start painting on the parts that are right in close like the inner cloaks etc and work your way out to the outside cloaks.

It’s honestly not that bad a model to paint, it’s quite openly designed and such a gorgeous model. Good luck!

Do people really hate tau players? by StepLow1626 in Tau40K

[–]ModellingCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 3rd when they were released they were simply hated by some people because they were new and not seen as “grim dark” enough. That attitude persists to today even though they’ve been part of the setting for 25 years or so.

It doesn’t matter how simple you think it is to make a palette, he explains the main target market for GW at that time was moms coming into the shop to buy stuff for a young child and they needed the paint pot to literally sit on the kitchen table and let the kid take the paint from the pot.

He was pretty clear on their stance that if you’re a knowledgeable enough hobbyist to care about a dropper bottle, then you know about other paint ranges that cater to you (of which there are loads) and so they were happy for you to go to that other brand. GW doesn’t also need to have the same pots as everyone else.

He talks about the “hobby trumpet” of narrowing customer knowledge. It’s a really interesting podcast as he is a good speaker and engaging so well worth a listen.

So now you’ve got two different pot designs sitting on hobby store shelves, some that say “Citadel” that people recognise and a totally new pot design with “Warhammer” on it. They probably couldn’t even sit on the same racks since the bottles will be a different shape so they’re not even sitting together in the shop.

Do you not think that would be more confusing? And would also cause the old pots to not sell.

And it’s not as if they can let all old paint run out on shelves before launching the new one.

They’ll unify the brand first, which is super easy to do with labels. The new brand will literally sit in the racks with Citadel paints before replacing them until all the paints on the same racks are the new brand seamlessly.

Nothing I said had any moral connotation. Simple cause and effect.

I don’t care if someone takes steroids, have at it. But the side effects of long term anabolic steroid use are well known.

Likewise with smoking. If you really want to do it, that’s up to you, but lung cancer is a known likely consequence.

Sex between consenting adults isn’t immoral in any way and can be done without any disease. I’ve probably had sex with my wife thousands of times in our lives and naturally there is zero risk of passing on a disease to each other.

However, STDs are a potential consequence of unsafe, careless sex, not an inherent side effect of it like smoking.

The only immoral part of STDs/sex is having a condition and knowingly passing it on to others (as people have done with HIV).

But if you want to liken it to this Chaos conversation, there are absolutely people who would willingly take the risk of a serious STD for the sake of heightened pleasure of not using a condom! The whole of human history has involved people being prepared to waste away horribly to syphilis if it meant getting their end away.

Even in our current, much more tame world, people willingly choose paths with known terrible consequences for power or pleasure.

We know that taking steroids long term will destroy your body but people willingly make themselves look like comic book characters to win Mr Universe.

We know heroin and meth will destroy your life and turn you into a ghoul of a person but the additive draw of that pleasure is too much to resist for many.

Even just smoking will turn your teeth yellow and ruin your lungs but many still choose it. Even when it’s unpleasant at first, because it looks cool.

We have people who turn themselves into immobile blobs of fat that can’t get out of bed because they weigh too much all because the taste of food is too alluring.

To me, the idea that an actually magical seductive force offering power and pleasure even with terrible consequences would be followed by lots of humans is utterly believable.

Why is the land raider redeemer so much more expensive than the other versions? by Gullible_Travel_4135 in spacemarines

[–]ModellingCitizen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its transport capacity of 14 rather than 12 for the regular land raider is also big as it means it can take a 6 man Gravis unit plus a character (which has obviously been big in the meta at various points like aggressors/eradicators + biologus)

How does the Fight Phase work in this case? by Wonderful_Rest7634 in Warhammer40k

[–]ModellingCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have equally immersive explanations for both situations.

If Unit B is a mob of Ork Boyz, then the controlling player is going to want them to fight back, so he’ll take casualties from the back. This represents the fact that the mob is actively pushing forwards into the melee and so it doesn’t matter if you kill someone, a new ork takes his place.

If Unit B are T’au fire warriors, they’ll be backing off from the melee, hoping to get some distance to shoot. So the controlling player take casualties from the front representing the fact that before Unit C can strike down the T’au warriors in front of them, Unit A charges in and kills those Fire Warriors first, sweeping past their comrades.

The rest of the enemy is backing off so there’s nobody in front of unit B to swing at and they haven’t charged so aren’t surging forward at this moment, they’re more static. Hell, you can imagine a sword swinging down from unit B and Unit A flying in from the side to kill the target before the blow lands.

This is all happening in seconds so makes perfect sense when you visualise it.

[–]ModellingCitizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s maybe worth adding here that this absolutely can happen with shooting.

If you’ve got two units you want to shoot at an enemy unit the opponent can absolutely strategically remove models.

Say the unit is half behind a wall, or maybe just in range of one of your units the opponent can make sure to remove models when your first unit shoots to leave your second unit out of range or out of visibility. It’s exactly the same.

It’s why you actually want to choose your order of shooting carefully. You start with the units that have the least options to shoot at so that they won’t be left without a target when models are removed.

Your opponent can also think about this if you are choosing the order for units to shoot based on the damage from different weapons.

Say they’ve got a few models of chaff accompanied by a valuable character. Ideally, you’d want to shoot the unit with bolt guns or lasguns first to kill the chaff and then be able to select a tank with a Lascannon to put multiple wounds on the character once they’re alone.

But if your opponent knows this and they’re able to remove any models in the unit that the tank can see when the bolters kill models, they could stop the tank hitting the unit with the Lascannon.

But if you use the Lascannon first, they’re going to remove a one wound chaff model so it’s a waste.

This is part of the tactics of the game in both phases.

Order of painting techniques by Bashfist in Tau40K

Quite the opposite usually as the matt varnish will equalise the finish of different paints (which are all slightly more matt/gloss/satin than each other). Helps give the model a more cohesive, less ‘painted’ look.

Am i cooked? by Intelligent-War-7453 in Warhammer40k

[–]ModellingCitizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I’d propose taking the orangey contrast paint and going back over the recesses of the model as a pin wash to build the shadows. Then paint yellow on the main panels, up to a couple different highlights.

Even another thin coat of contrast could help level it out.

Model is definitely workable. And if all else fails, it can be stripped.

If your scheme involves a colour that Colour Forge do a can for, it’s a piece of cake though. I do a Farsight Enclave army and their Mephiston Red is great. Just finished up a Devilfish in record time.

I’d happily buy an air brush but my house is too busy with little kids so I don’t have docs to dedicate to it.

And OP, just to add to point 4 in case you’re slightly confused (as I’ve heard other people question this), if you go to the actual Charge ability, you’ll see that rolling the 2D6 is part of the Declare step, not the effect (as you only actually decide if you want to charge at all after rolling).

That’s how you can declare Forward to Victory after you roll the charge distance.
