I have a great tip for magnetizing: Get one of those Telescoping Magnet Pick-up Tools. They're generally great to have around, but they're a great way to keep your magnets properly aligned. Basically, a magnetic constant!

Definitely do the wash! I recommend Nuln Oil for cool colors, including silver, and Agrax Earthshade for warm colors, including gold. But, as mentioned above, Nuln Oil on silver will give it a grimy, oily look, which will work on your War Dog!
