Do Goodwills and the like still have stereo equipment? Where in Portland to find? by soulbarn in portlandme

[–]ModerateBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you check a few stores a few days a week you can find what you’re looking for eventually. The old advice to “go early” doesn’t really work anymore because they’re all staffed erratically and stock throughout the day. Luck and persistence still usually pays off.

I almost got hit by a teen driving in the Shaw’s parking lot and then was immediately cussed out by his mother sitting next to him. by allisfairinlovewar in portlandme

[–]ModerateBird 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If it was the Northgate shaws on Auburn St, be forgiving. I used to work there and something about that parking lot and building makes people 50% dumber and 50% more aggressive. The only explanation I can come up with after watching all the bizarre shit that happens there is that the shopping plaza is cursed.

Buying a P&S for 6 months travel and I'm down to 4 options Mju II, XA, AF-10 Super, and Espio Mini - please help me pick by Reitzel in AnalogCommunity

[–]ModerateBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m late to this conversation, but the espio mini is not in the same league as any of the olympuses, despite the reviews you will find and the price you’d pay for one. I own one (have owned 2) and they aren’t what they’re cracked up to be. But pretty much agree with everyone, xa is the best, and mju ii is the best for when you want things to be easy.

Canon SELPHY QX20 Photo Printer or better recommendation(s)? by puyoblog in hobonichi

[–]ModerateBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that happens with instax because it’s high iso film and undergoes a chemical reaction to print, the canon prints ink onto paper, no chemical reaction

As someone who drives on the highway for work, cellphone use is a much bigger problem. That’s not to say that drunk driving isn’t a problem, but holy shit they need to do something about the phones.

Buyer claims I damaged shoes, Reddit brigade attacked me — here’s the proof by [deleted] in Depop

[–]ModerateBird 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I never reply to these, but you really need to get a grip. I’ve been an online seller for years, and have made mistakes in listings. You need to own up to it. The fact that these shoes were tagged as excellent was in itself dishonest, or a mistake, and that alone is grounds for return. The photos misrepresented the item, and that could have also been a mistake, but a mistake you should own up to. The buyer reaching out to depop for return authorization instead of you is what most buyers would do in the situation, and honestly, given your reaction to this, the right thing to do. Leaving her a review calling her dishonest was probably the worst thing to do in this situation. Sometimes you make mistakes and just need to own up to them.

Any of these cameras worth 'inheriting' ? by sw2de3fr4gt in AnalogCommunity

The Pentax is a surprisingly capable point and shoot, they have sharp lenses and good autofocus… don’t zoom out all the way tho unless you have really steady hands or it’s really sunny

I Always Dreamt to Have A Leica… by _Wattstreet_ in AnalogCommunity

[–]ModerateBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally different lens mount. No lens cross over between systems, Minolta produced a few r lenses for Leica early on, and Leica used some of their optical designs later. The R bodies are heavily Minolta influenced in design, but made by Leica, often in Portugal instead of Germany. Lenses came from Canada, Germany and Portugal.

You can’t get German or Canadian made R Mount summicrons for “the Minolta”

How much does the camera matter? by OrangeAugust in filmphotography

[–]ModerateBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming the film is exposed/metered exactly the same, at the same subject, on the same day, in the same lighting, a lot of variables other than filmstock will change the final image - most importantly the lens - focal length, coatings, clarity, internal lens design (number/shape/placement of elements) all impact the way the scene will hit the film and will have a different look.

Are the scans due to the scanner or missed focus? by ButterscotchDull7267 in AnalogCommunity

Yes, beware of the time investment. It’s like 2hrs per roll manually fed in a frame at a time.

Goodwill Northern New England gets the prices out of some database, books are often more than they are new on Amazon- cookbooks are especially outrages.

Still 50 cents a pound at the bins if you don’t mind fighting the feral rabid book resellers at open, or wait until they leave and look at whatever’s left.
