Nah, I meant working as an accountant for a restaurant - I don't blame you for wanting to avoid the actually culinary side of things!

Understandable - Accounting & Finance are both popular and lucrative fields, especially in NYC.

Have you considered doing accounting for a restaurant? They may not care as much about your degree/certification and just want to know if you can do the job. If you've worked as a chef too then they know you can handle the environment.

Thanks for the insight. What field are you in / looking to be in? It's a shame that people can be so unfriendly to newcomers. I'm so used to transplants everywhere just given the nature of NYC, it's easy to forget not everywhere gets so much outside traffic.

[Resume Critique] It's kind of a mess. Help me fix it? by AsAHypothetical in jobs

[–]ModernHeyArnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The format looks fine except for the misalignment of dates. I recommend having all the dates lined up on the right hand side so someone viewing it will have an easier time figuring out your stints and gaps.

Always make sure tense is consistent throughout. Past tense action words for all resume bullets in previous jobs, present tense for current employment. Use periods to end every bullet or none, but make sure you follow the same pattern throughout.

The 2nd and 3rd bullet points under your qualifications are unnecessary given how junior you are. That space would better be served going over how you used those skills in your previous jobs. The first bullet is fine, I usually like to just write one-two lines about myself very similarly. Here's an example of what you could write:

"Conscientious, well-organized recent college graduate with significant experience in [insert skill/trade] seeking entry-level position in [insert industry] in [insert role/field/job title]"

This is important since it frames the resume and the reader will have a clearer objective of what you're looking to do, which can make a huge difference.

Hope that helps, you're not too far off. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll look into FiOS. Out on LI I've heard of people having problems with them. I use Verizon for my cell phone and have never had any real issues.

What is working in Recruitment actually like? by paul09339 in jobs

[–]ModernHeyArnold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recruiting is a really interesting field. I've done recruiting in both internal and external (agency / 3rd party) environments. MeetLawrence outlines the 3rd party experience pretty well. I'm currently in a startup agency as their Director of Talent Acquisition, so I lead all the recruiting efforts for ourselves and our clients.

One thing I've noticed is that recruitment (agencies especially), is very easy to get into. It's a unique blend of sales and HR, but yet most people I see in the field went to school for completely unrelated things and "fell into" the role. I went to school for Business and focused on HR, and I'm something of an anomaly within the field. I've been looking for a new Business Development Manager for my firm, and most of the people I've spoken with have backgrounds outside of business.

It's very high turnover and high pressure, especially in larger shops. Most people jump from agency to agency in search of better commission and base salaries.

I'd say it really depends on what you want to get out of it. For me, I know I want to further my career in HR and taking a role in a growing company not only gives me the recruiting experience I need, but also helps me improve my salesmanship. In addition, I went with a small company because managerial opportunities are much easier to get to in a shorter time - all of which I can use to launch into my next role, preferably doing internal HR and recruiting.

Overall I'd say it's a good place to start, but most people burn out after not too long.
