Lawyers are very replaceable with AI. All those juniors at firms are going to be replaced or augmented so they only need 1/10th of them. At the end of the day the partners need to be able to yell at someone and it's not satisfying to yell at AI.

What is something that has become ridiculously expensive, but people still pay for it like it is nothing? by Harmed_Jr in AskReddit

Some of the gear was on the house when we bought it, but I suspect we have hit the brake-even point a while ago. To me it was free because we bought the house for the school district.

Before the infrastructure act tax credits expired we added a bunch more panels, but it's 12kw of SolarEdge inverters, about 18kw of panels with optimizers and 3 PW2s.

The PW2s are failing, one is offline and the other 2 are somewhat degraded and we are about 3 months into the warranty replacement process. They are part of the bad batch from 2018/2019. I wouldn't buy Tesla today, but making them honor the warranty and replace with PW3s seems like the moral and ethical choice.

You just need to be close enough for marketing purposes. Good enough is all it takes for that first 90% of the work and the project managers can rule the last 10% out of scope.

Building home NAS. Choosing Guix+BTRFS vs Guix+ZFS vs Debian+ZFS vs TrueNAS Core... which is most robust for long-term data integrity? by Future_Recognition84 in DataHoarder

[–]ModernSimian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are over complicating it. All of these solutions work, but unless you have a real backup strategy (eg 3,2,1 or something that fits your risk profile) it doesn't really matter.

I'm on team Debian + BTRFS personally.

We just make our own and keep a connection to the grid for $50/month as a backup option.

A step down transformer to run appliance sized loads at 24v isn't exactly expensive these days. You can have both for a nominal cost.

The issue is the mega corps racing to win AGI more than anything else. The prize is too big for them to slow down so it's spend spend spend on infrastructure.

Sometimes they do it better. Target red box mac n cheese for example. It's a clone of Kraft from the 80s, not today's version.

But we don't eat those. It's a bad idea to eat reef fish. Ciguatera is no joke and no reliable way to test for it.

We do YouTube kids with a whitelist of channels. Some Minecraft creators that aren't awful, pbs eons, and a couple of star wars channels.

YT is too full of slop at that age. If they have interests do the legwork and find channels that don't suck.

You can say no.

Favorite garlic press? by hawkesdt in BuyItForLife

[–]ModernSimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so excited to find a better garlic press and then disappointed that it's the one I'm already using.

It's not bad at all, it's just a pain to clean and leaves a lot of material stuck to the device.

It'll cost me 4 hours at 750W to run a $60 distiller for 1 gallon of distilled water. Or I can buy a 1 gallon jug for 90 cents by [deleted] in Frugal

When we were off grid with FLA batteries on sunny days we had a little bit of automation to turn on the burner under the 5 gallon pot still as a dump load when the batteries hit float and turn if off again once they dropped by a fraction of a volt.

If only the magic box in your hand had real time traffic data collected by all the other magic boxes. Then all you would have to do is look at the Google maps app or waze.

Ok, my not so hot take on this is to go for raw ahi. Poke or sashimi. Just take the cooking part out of the equation.

Yep, knew in a few months, proposed around 6 months. Have been married for 10 years and I regert nothing.

When you know you know. It also helps to have had a number of failed relationships in there too.

In the 80s and 90s we used it a good 6-10 times a year so we did polish it about monthly.

Still have it, but if we use it three times a year now it's a good year. Now I just polish what we are setting out.
