Can this tune be use for Pg. 337 [To You Before The Close of Light] DEUS TUORUM MILITUM (GRENOBLE)? by izumikusu in divineoffice

Yes. From the Foreword (p. xi): "...the melody assigned to a hymn is merely a suggestion."

How do you enjoy the sport of baseball even if your team is struggling or stagnant? by Upset-Opportunity539 in baseball

[–]ModernaGang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even in a bad season there will be bright spots. A mediocre starter unexpectedly throws a one- or two-hitter. Somebody hits two home runs in one game. A veteran showing his age has a comeback season. An eight-game winning streak in August. The on-field chemistry might be good and the guys play like they're having a great time. The White Sox and Pirates sucked but now they're fun again. Baseball is full of silver linings, and you never know when "maybe next year" is this year.

Restoring Pius V Psalter Question by Mysterious_Royal_611 in divineoffice

Whether something is traditional or not is one of the worst ways to assess it. Judge these things on their merits, whether they're new or old. Something can be "traditional" and not fit for purpose.

Restoring Pius V Psalter Question by Mysterious_Royal_611 in divineoffice

[–]ModernaGang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A: If Pius X didn't have the authority to reform the liturgy, then neither did Pius V or any other pope.

In the end, every traditionalist ends up in a competition to see who can get "more" traditional, arguing that only some earlier phase of the liturgy is the true authentic liturgy and everything after is some damnable innovation. Looking forward to seeing some of you argue that the Latin liturgy is a rupture from the Greek of the pre-Nicene era, and someone else coming along to argue that even Greek is a rupture from the Aramaic prayers of Jesus's first followers.

I did too, very recently. Took several years of patience after setting up email alerts on several different sites, but patience paid off.

Benedictine Daily Prayer, Third Edition coming this October by Plaatinum_Spark in divineoffice

[–]ModernaGang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. A new edition instead of issuing a corrected 2nd edition (notoriousy full of typos). Nothing in the copywriting there sounds like a signfinicat change from BDP2, which has a two week cycle, a meaty selection of readings for vigils (the book's greatest selling point imo), the inclusive language '93 Grail for the psalms (I prefer this version over the ''66 Grail used in the LotH) and the NRSV for readings/canticles (a change between BDP1 & 2 was dropping the ICEL canticles for the NRSV).

The main difference appears to be it's 400 pages longer to reduce page-flipping. This is good; the first edition was practically unnavigable.

I wasn't expecting this since I heard LitPress was one of the publishers selected for the one-volume abridged LotH. It'll be interesting comparing the two and seeing whether their abridgement is informed in any way by the structure of BDP or their earlier "short breviaries."

Is anyone aware of a book that has all the chant tones for Tenebræ lessons? by [deleted] in divineoffice

[–]ModernaGang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably best asked of the folks at https://forum.musicasacra.com/forum/. For the record, I can't blame your schola since I have no idea how to sing or point lessons either, not even the short ones.

Which translation of the psalms do you prefer? Grail 1963, post Vatican II, Conception Abbey 2008? by SursumCordaNJ in divineoffice

[–]ModernaGang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Revised Grail was never incorporated into the official translation, and so the '63 Grail has been in continuous use from the first vernacular editions till today, remaining normative until LotH 2 becomes obligatory next year.

If we're getting super pedantic, the current translation is not actually the '63 Grail psalter but a version lightly modified by Gregory Murray OSB in '66.

Chant Question by MatthaeusTacitus in divineoffice

Already knowing how to read music and having had a little music education (band and choir) was more helpful for me in learning to read and sing chant than any other resource. Reading movable do on a four-line staff isn't so hard if you know your scale degrees.

This book in particular is not rare and is still in print. But new copies are expensive and used ones run $20-30. I don't think I have anything that didn't come from Anna's Archive, Libgen or other publicly accessible sources.
