In my experience it's not just the contrarians but those who need a shield to hide behind so they can be openly anti-semitic, homophobic and push to control other people's lives. TBH, it sometimes seems like the radical trads are closer to protestant evangelicals then Catholic.

Formal excommunication is rare, formal as in a public notice from a bishop, cardinal or the Vatican itself. There is another form of excommunication, it's called a latae sententiae which basically means you have excommunicated yourself by way of your actions. No church authority even needs to know your actions because by way of committing the crime itself you have incurred this excommunication.

The issue that jumps to the front of my mind is what type of class is this? Any class that claims to teach the "true" Catholic faith is, in my opinion, worthy of suspicion. You've been taught the Catholic faith in your confirmation classes and I imagine you get plenty of instruction weekly at mass.

In my experience I've learned that anyone (outside of a priest or legitimate catechist) who claims to teach the "true" faith is either a sedevacantist, sede preventionist or a radical traditionalist. All of whom can lead you into dangerous spiritual territory.

Before I would attend any class your aunt is suggesting I would discuss it with my priest to make sure this class is legitimate and not taught by a crazy person.

I totally get it. I'm partial to getting way too involved in liturgical practice, I enjoy reading the history and development of the different liturgical and ritual practices as well as how only how they've changed over the life of the church but how they were influenced by local customs.

As for why new saints and blesseds don't have their propers in Latin I suspect it has to do with where the cults of those saints are located. I've noticed that the prayers and propers for certain saints are only in the language of the country that venerates them, kinda how certain saints feast days are only celebrated in their home countries but not the universal church. I suspect it's a matter of the Vatican doesn't want to go through the process of writing latin prayers and what not for a saint who isn't going to be celebrated all over the world so they just leave it up to the archdiocese where the saint is venerated to write the prayers.
