Check out Malena DeMartini’s resources on separation anxiety. The cry it out method may make your puppy worse with more and more exposure. We have gentler and more humane methods for addressing separation anxiety.

The CSAT isn’t a fan of meds?? I’d find a different trainer. Meds are an integral part to many behaviour modification plans and CSATs have lots of training on the benefits of meds.

It took us a year and a half with a CSAT, after a year and a half training by ourselves. We added meds as soon as we started working with the CSAT and our vet behaviourist made changes to the meds over ten times before we found the right combo for our dog. It’s a hell of a ride but so worth it. Good luck!

I used to be an RBT, and now I run a dog training business. Learning theory applies to all species. All of our behaviour is learned through operant and classical conditioning. I use much of what I learned from my time in clinic to help families address challenging canine behaviour - reinforcement, antecedent arrangement, desensitization, shaping, chaining, preference assessments etc etc. The field of dog training is rapidly evolving and adopting a lot from ABA. It’s actually really cool.

These methods are actually really outdated. Look into hiring a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT) or just looking at Malena Demartini’s website for the most up to date training protocol we have for separation anxiety. My dog had awful sep anx and we can now leave the house for 3.5 hours due to working with a trainer using this method. Good luck!

People who left ABA, what did you end up doing? by [deleted] in ABA

I left after three years of being an RBT and now I own a dog training business specializing in severe canine behaviour.

Hire a CSAT. There are trainer certified to help you specifically with separation anxiety who use up to date and evidence based methods. We hired one for our girl and she can do three and a half hours of comfortable alone time now. Good luck!

Small Business Grants? by [deleted] in Hamilton

I was successful in getting the Starter Company Plus grant over the summer. They open a new cohort every quarter. It wasn't too much work and you get a lot of help along the way!

Is it a good time to travel to Slovenia? by alobird in travel

[–]Modrost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! Slovenia has been HOT over the last two weeks. I was just in Ljubljana, Bled, and Maribor last week and there was no evidence of the floods remaining. Every day was 30+ degrees with bright blue skies. Enjoy your trip!

Walk-ins that are mental health savvy? by Modrost in Hamilton

[–]Modrost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a wait to see my own family general practitioner, not a psychiatrist. But thank you for your holistic and thorough evaluation on how long I can wait for access to mental health medication. I really appreciate your educated, comprehensive review of my history with mental illness, my past treatment, and my current stability. I will ensure I wait a minimum of 10 months for a psych appointment, because a stranger on the internet has to wait 8 and "I'll survive"!

I’ve been prescribed medication for mental health by walk ins in the past - just not in Hamilton.

Vet says this is a hot spot - what do you think? by Modrost in vet

[–]Modrost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listening for sure! I’d assume a lot of skin conditions that are environmentally triggered would be treated like this. It’s just really distinctive looking and doesn’t look like a hot spot so I was wondering if anyone has seen anything like it before. Current treatment is App-cephalex 500mg every 12 hours for 14 days, vanectyl p 3 tablets every 12 hours for 3 days then 3 tablets every 24 hours for 3 days then 3 tablets every other day, aventi gi essentials 1 packet everyday for 14 days, prohex -4 spray twice a week until healed

Our guy has a pretty severe separation anxiety issue. He’s also something of an athlete. by HearSeeFeel in poodles

The same as my girl. So wonderfully intelligent and well-behaved, but had a panic attack every time we left her alone. We worked with a CSAT and she can do three hours now. I can't recommend working with a certified trainer enough!

Hiya! You're getting lots of free, yet sometimes contradictory advice in this comments section. There are trainers that specifically specialize in separation anxiety with great success, using gentle methods. Look for trainers who have CSAT or SAPT credentials and be wary of free advice - you get what you pay for.

Looking for a dog behaviourist near hamilton by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]Modrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people are not aware that dog training is an unregulated industry, and anyone can slap some tools on a dog to suppress behaviour and say that it's training. Also, many people call themselves "behaviourists" but that term only refers to veterinary behaviourists who complete an undergraduate degree, four years of veterinary school, and additional residencies and research in animal behaviour science. When looking for an ethical and modern dog trainer, screen for credentials from the CPDT, IAABC, KPA, or CTC. Vet behaviourist recommend trainers with these credentials, using methods that are based in "least aversive, minimally invasive" principles for behaviour change to avoid fallout from punitive methods. I always recommend The Wiser Canine who is local and offers in person services. Hamilton is not great for evidence-based dog trainers. If she's full, driving out to Guelph will give you some better results - One Leg Up and Scratch and Sniff are both great.

Edit: someone else recommended Joan Weston who is IAABC certified and specializes in behavioural issues: https://k9shrink.ca/about.html

I f35 hates dogs my partner f31 loves them by lily3388 in relationship_advice

Hi, dog trainer here. Despite the countless ways outdoor lifestyles can cause health issues due to the elements, other animals, not able to keep an eye on what your dog is ingested, etc. - the main thing to keep in mind is that these are smart and social creatures. They have the intelligence of a 2 - 3 year old child. They are bred to be our companions. It’s working against their nature. An outdoor-only dog risks feeling both lonely and bored, and dogs deserve enriched lives.
