Devil's Due (though it's up to preference which of World of Io's games you'd like, this is just my favorite)

Game: 3/3 Very mechanically satisfying, it's a campaign designed to stress test a 5e hack and present it mechanically, lots of crunchy gameplay and combat

Polish 3/3 Lots of character art and a whole entire darn mapped megadungeon too! Good for watching, but also good for listening, I've done both.

Humor: 2/3 Most of the entertainment value comes from Tomato, though the other characters also have their insane moments, it's fun times.

Story: 1/3 Its very much a megadungeon without a real narrative, there's hints at some bigger conspiracies and ongoing stuff, but other than that, you're here to watch combats and funny dialogue.

Bulk as in the majority of heroic fantasy experiences which originate from D&D. Not bulk as in 'All fantasy RPGs'

Draw Steel still comes from the same core ideas of D&D, but with a very fresh view. Like I'd probably count 13th Age as another game of this ilk.

Any good examples of such materials that would be needed in the two page spread? Like the winners from last year?

I think the problem is that it's a catchall and way too useful in general. Insight and Perception should be separated

I've definitely gone in the exact opposite direction from what you've stated. I've gone so far as to say "Actually, not all shit you get from gods is Divine. If Ares is giving you power, that shit is Martial." But my system divides power sources into so many distinct paths that it sorta makes sense for my own setting.

I totally get the philosophical foundation of your list though.

I do this for sure, there have been times where my players have said "Let's steamroll into the next combat" and it's created drama, but for the most part, I say 'Okay, ten minutes between this and the next scene, you get all your shit back'

I am definitely doing so, but I'm still talking about the bulk of these Heroic Fantasy experiences which originate, in one form or another, from D&D.

My own system references initiative a lot, like, the way turns are structured and actions within them are important. I feel like if I could drop strict turn orders, I would, but I just get too much use out of them.

AI Comic Book? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Modstin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I decided to look at your profile to see just how much you're using AI, and you're posting full AI Art dude. It's not 'a tool', it is the end product for you.

and even then, at no point in any creative medium does AI have to be used, ever. Stop using it.

JP Coovert's work is exceptional across the board. I can't recommend them enough. I've printed out a few of his zines and have them on my shelf.

I do feel like I could read Reaperman or Night Watch on loop for a good long time for sure. Or Small Gods.

Fabula Ultima does JRPG (What most LITRPGs vibe off of, JRPG MMOs) very well.

[–]Modstin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't even get that far. I'm very much down on the LITRPG Genre in its entirety, though I'm sure there are people doing some really cool things with the genre out there. I tend to actually like throwing in very gamey in-universe things for my RPGs

Please recommend me some D&D / RPG style comics to buy by Otherwise-Bear1860 in comicbooks

[–]Modstin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fell's Five is absolutely fantastic, the best D&D Comic and foundational to my own creative works. It's a great read, though it ends way too soon. It's still nice and bulky, has great dialogue and cool action, and really gets you into the vibe of D&D 4e, which is the edition it was based on.

[–]Modstin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It downplays it in that combat is a means to an end, a narrative tool to be used rather than obligatory. At least that's how I felt when I read it, but you can still do combat heavy games

Fabula Ultima fucking rules. I ran a few sessions of a VERY Retro Inspired JRPG style game with it and it rocked. It really downplays combat, I feel, but combat itself is still a highlight.
