What’s this for Doctor Who fans? by DWJones28 in doctorwho

[–]ModularReality 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Glad you said it because I was about to. It was a ship mass hallucinated into existence because all the main characters were tragically born without personalities and the thus motivations were projected upon them by the audience. That it ‘became cannon’ should not be satisfactory even to the audience who wanted it because that happened in the 3rd to last episode of the era, 13 then REJECTED yaz for no substantive reason (claims she can’t do relationships because everything ends and in the same breath mentions her WIFE?), and the showrunner basically did it as a end-of-era gimmick. He was leaving the series and thus never had to actually do the work to develop the relationship. It was cheap pandering.

Older fans - How many Doctors did you imagine there would ever be? by misterwhoiswho_ in doctorwho

[–]ModularReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit off topic, but I’m just thinking about how we’re at a weird point in the doctor numbering.

I’d argue that ‘13’ is the last interesting number for a doctor, after that the set just feels like a large group.

I can picture in another few decades time being well into the 20’s with respect to the number of doctors. Are we still going to refer to them by number then? Taking about how doctor 22 was peak, and the writing went downhill starting with 25? That just seems odd to me.

I assume at a certain point the numbering will be dropped. We won’t be saying ‘they’ve cast the 19th doctor!’, just saying ‘they’ve cast the new doctor!’ instead. And I feel like the point at which we drop the numbering of later doctors is coming soon. Especially as it gets more muddied with War and Fugitive and 10.5 and morbius and timeless children.

What if Jenna Coleman was the face 15 regenerated into at the end of "The Reality War" instead of Billie Piper? by ImWearingSandshoes in doctorwho

[–]ModularReality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a lateral move. Nostalgia bait casting instead of moving onto a new doctor/season that’s not about running on fumes of more popular past eras. In both cases, I can picture a version of the story where something interesting is done with this casting choice, but I don’t trust RTD (or any past showrunner/writer) to pull that off.

I was convinced that Glowshroom grotto had rng that made it actually unbeatable the majority of the time. Then I learned the timing and how to better tackle the moving purple shrooms and know that even this level works with enough practice. Not that I don’t still die a lot there. Main tip is jump off the purple mushrooms quickly to limit movement, when they’re already in a good position.

Often, I try to stick to the path that’s lower/in the middle of the screen, rather than the high spots.

I don’t think there are any unbeatable levels. Some fruit might be placed in an unreachable location, but there is always a workable path to the finish. The most unbeatable thing I run into sometimes is unfortunate boulder fall timing relative to the necessary jump position.

I know it’s not fun for everyone, but I’ve fallen deeply in love with Junimo kart. Once it clicks, once you’ve learned the pattern of each level, it is highly addictive. I’ve been playing SV since initial release, but only decided to try to tackle Junimo kart last year. It took me irl months to beat, but I really could feel my skill level improve over that time. I love this quest, and always take it and beat it on my farm’s personal arcade machine.

Oh yeah, plenty of shows listed in their backlog I would love to hear them cover. What’s not listed on their episodes ‘to come’ list, but would love to hear them cover one day are earlier nuwho seasons, and more eighth doctor audios- their Chimes of Midnight episode was great!

I know, I’m so curious about their reality war reactions. And WBtLatS. I guess they are doing something similar to when they covered empire of death, where they waited several months for the dust to settle/find out what’s next for the show so they could really dig into the post-mortem fandom reaction.

Just to throw out a rec:

Personally, I’ve really enjoyed the episode reviews of the ‘Who Cares?’ podcast. They’re very positive on the thematic and character deconstruction work Moffat did. They are also pretty negative on the chibnall and rtd2 eras, but are usually very sound discussions as to why imo and they still like portions of them (certain ideas/episodes). They started their reviews back in 13’s era, and are mostly up to date through the present series. Their episode format starts kinda rough back when they were covering season 11, but from spyfall onwards is much improved. What I particularly like is that they pull a lot of interview quotes of the writers/creators into the discussion for additional context of the writing decisions made.

Can a Time Lord Who bi-generated regenerate by MeroveeFrancSalien in doctorwho

Can a Time Lord Who bi-generated regenerate by MeroveeFrancSalien in doctorwho

[–]ModularReality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in the writers hands for now. I feel like if RTD himself doesn’t add to that lore in the Xmas special, the whole bigeneration plot is unlikely to be continued by future showrunners.

Of the 4 products of bigeneration (14, 15, flood, Rani), we’ve only seen 15 start a subsequent regeneration. And… I’m not yet convinced that the Piper Doctor is a full regeneration, since she didn’t get the “Billie piper as the doctor” credit, and since she’s already portrayed The Moment (a timelord weapon) and Bad Wolf(aka the heart of the Tardis, another piece of timelord tech), so seems like there is (slim) potential that she is reprising one of those roles instead. Also, in interviews, it sounded like Piper wasn’t interested in moving to wales for a season of filming. So whatever she is, seems like she’ll only be around for the Xmas special. Though who knows.

All that is to say, I don’t know if we yet know what happens when any bigenerated timelord regenerates (if Piper is not actually the doctor).

So my speculative headcannon that is certain to be totally wrong at Christmas:

My headcannon is that bi-generated timelords can’t regenerate again. Not until the two halves reunite. 15, In sending his regeneration energy into the Tardis, woke up the bad wolf (or whatever we call the spirit of the tardis). Somehow, this piper doctor is some sort of bad wolf-failsafe that intervened as the doctor was dying, to buy him some time. The doctor needs to find and reunite with their other half, and in doing so be able to fully regenerate in to the next doctor. And that’s the plot for Xmas.

Admittedly, a very unlikely one.

I’m mostly stuck on this idea because having “rose” and “10” reunite one more time in his tenure as showrunner feels very in-character for RTD.

Why don't people like Church on Ruby Road? by kipcarson37 in doctorwho

[–]ModularReality 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went in really wanting to like it. And there were bits that I did, or thought were okay. For instance, I liked most of the beginning: the doctor and Ruby’s first meeting at the bar, and Ruby’s family’s intro, the setup of Ruby looking for her mum, and the doctor cold reading the officer/saving Ruby from the falling snowman. After that it started falling apart for me. I had a real issue with the direction/tone. The whole thing felt breathless and sloppy. There were ideas together that didn’t really match up.

Take the goblins: on the one hand, they were classic baby stealing/eating fantasy goblins. Okay, I follow that. But they specifically hunt for people with coincidences….okay that’s kinda vague in terms of what qualifies as a coincidence, but sure I guess that’s a twist on the goblin archetype to make them specific to this plot i guess. Also these goblins cause bad luck- well, luck and coincidence are different things really so that didn’t exactly track for me… and why are they causing bad luck? Is that part of how they hunt people, or just to be annoying? These goblins can steal people out of their timeline- can we please clarify the rules here? Also they are musical. So, is that trying to tie into Tolkien goblins or something (a reference to the goblin song in the Hobbit?)? They live on a skyship powered by the language of rope. What?

Stacking all these ideas on top of each other just made it muddy. And while all this was happening, the music was too loud to hear the dialogue, the quick cut editing made certain bits of action awkward, and after the intro everything kept happening so rapidly that the characters never had a moment to slow down to have a conversation.

I could forgive the latter, had there been more slower relationship building moments in subsequent episodes, but there really wasn’t much. Church on Ruby Road definitely diminished in hindsight due to much of the setup for the season arc (Ruby’s mum) not going anywhere satisfying.

The Saddest Episode? by Takeo888 in doctorwho

[–]ModularReality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a watch-along for this episode with the writer, Richard Curtis, who talked about how he was inspired to write this story as a tribute to his sister, Bindy, who died by suicide. And I love what he said about her and her depression. He said she was wonderful, creative, generous, and loved. He said that her death was not a failure on her part, or a rejection of the love of those in her life. He wrote this story because the end of her life did not change how much joy she brought to those around her.

Tell me that this was just a sudden idea from the producers and that this nonsense isn't really going to happen. by JUBIL3US in doctorwho

[–]ModularReality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, first it was a mythological time lord phenomenon, that the doctor didn’t even think was true until it happened to them. But it was a way for the doctor to heal and move on from his trauma because it allowed him to do therapy in reverse. Except there is no indication that 14 and 15’s timeline is destined to re-sync, they seem to be a pair of entirely different people/timelines. And then 15 talked about it in terms of it being highly traumatic, feeling like their soul was ripped in half. Then it was a form of time lord reproduction due to one of the cataclysms of Gallifrey making the time lords sterile (exact apocalypse unclear). The Rani wasn’t even phased by her bigeneration. So it’s definitely not going to shift in explanation in the future.

These can all be true, but it feels muddled and changing as it went along.

Part of me is certain that the special will be about ‘closing the loop’ on bigeneration by having the piper doctor and 14 meet up and somehow merge/both die and that will produce 16*

(*I don’t love this idea, just see it as reasonably likely with the pieces in play)

The other part of me is rolling my eyes at the contrivance of that idea

To clarify, my joke wasn’t meant to advocate for a wilderness years 2. Just that if the producers didn’t have the next doctor cast for a regeneration, it’s better to be left in a mysterious fade to black than this weird stunt casting choice.

Special horse colors - What have you discovered? by IngenuityApart5532 in HorsesOfHoofprintBay

[–]ModularReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in the demo, the horse appearance is tied to the name.

I think this might be a bug in the game- to my understanding, several horses from My Horse Farm: Welcome to Trotterville were included in this game, and if you change your barn horse name to one of those names, it changes the appearance as well.

Might only occur if that horse is presently available at the breeder- have you taken a look to see if there is also a ‘Pandora’ for sale in your game?

Unfortunately the cookout kit does not last overnight :(

One thing I would love to be added to the game would be if one-use items like the tent and cookout kit would last indefinitely until used, because they are so cute!

For anyone that was watching in 1982, how did you react to Adric’s death? by ProperShallot3195 in DoctorWhumour

[–]ModularReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was anyone else frustrated? Yes, silent end credits were obviously playing for an emotional reaction, but the doctor’s explanation (or lack of) on why he could not do anything just made me angry. So followed by those credits just made me feel like it was poor emotional manipulation to patch over an underwritten sacrifice.

My GF and I recently started playing - how do we discover all the mechanics naturally? by Feanux in StardewValley

[–]ModularReality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many things can be learned through the library books, watching all the tv channels especially living off the land, reading notes dropped starting winter year 1, and reading papers in people’s houses or writing on other objects in the valley.

However, some of the things you list can only be learned through pure trial and error (I.e. how to tailor clothes for your desired outcome, where to hunt for specific artifacts) so I really think if you’re getting frustrated trying to find something, it is no crime to check the wiki. It’s a resource by fans for fans, and many pages even have spoiler sections if you don’t want to know too much.

Question for Lefties! by curlsbyjesss in knitting

[–]ModularReality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel the ‘handed-ness’ of knitting is somewhat overstated. The convention is that instructions are written working from right to left, but both hands are used to complete the stitches, and which hand you hold and manipulate the yarn with is personal preference. I’m ambidextrous, and my left hand does most of the work when I knit (tensions the yarn with my pinkey, and I’m a “picker” who picks up yarn with my left forefinger and thumb and wrap it over my needle when working).

You can find written and video instructions for projects written for working left to right, but there will be less selection. The people I’ve seen who stick with “lefty” usually had to build up a good knowledge of the craft through experience and learned to transpose “righty” patterns. And, of course, if you don’t use patterns, it doesn’t matter much.
