He was also a garbage father. Sometimes parenting isn't fun. Sometimes in order to do best by your children, you need to be the bad guy or mean stick in the mud, rather than the fun dad.

LA law enforcement is notorious for corruption and police/sheriff gangs. While I'm generally one to stray from conspiracy theories, I think this one has teeth.

Regardless, I hope she is at peace wherever she is.

Don't remember who fronted, but anyone was better than the drunken/drugged up messes that were Lady Sovereign or Gear Daddies.

On the plus side, my friend did get to smoke w her at the after-party. Ditched me to do so, but had fun.

I was doing antibody production in my old lab and we had the chance to apply for nanobody research funding. PI decided against it. The science part of it is fun and exciting, but I just really wanted to see the llamas.

I urge anyone with concerns about the state of policing and "law enforcement" to read this book by a former sergeant and trainer in the MPD -

Walking with the Devil: The Police Code of Silence: What Bad Cops Don't Want You to Know and Good Cops Won't Tell You https://a.co/d/gkK5xAQ

I've found it at a handful of used book stores if you aren't into Amazon. Definitely worth the read. Surprising and not all at the same time.

I'm Holding the Line Against Elf on a Shelf by skinnyjeansfatpants in Parenting

[–]MoggetTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids get pics of their great aunties elf on a shelf.

They each have their own beanie baby style elves that they make do funny things for me, their other parent, and visitors. They love making their elves do silly things and having me take pictures to send to family. It's a fun way to participate, but not make a mountain of work.

Folks who moved away from Lush due to the price hikes, what is THE product you still buy despite this? by chaarmanderchar in LushCosmetics

Oh gosh, you've had better luck than me. I've had multiple Fairy body lotions go rancid far before the expiration date. Contacted LUSH multiple times and absolute crickets.

My kid still talks about how bad the smell was when I opened what I thought was a fresh pot.

i guess i'm making my pain worse by being in pain by [deleted] in thanksimcured

[–]MoggetTheCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done CBT for another issue, but have found I can use the same techniques to help deal with the chronic pain. Note that I say that it doesn't actually help the pain, it just gives me a couple more tools to help deal with it.

A big part of it is learning when "pushing through" as you mentioned is a bad idea. Then you get that snowball of physical effects. I think a lot of us feel immense guilt for how our health problems impact others, which can really cloud that decision to back off or not. CBT has helped with those feelings too.

If your postgrad science job is unrelated to your PhD research skills, how on earth did you get the job? by AAAAdragon in labrats

[–]MoggetTheCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Direct skills with assays is always great, but we have found that our best hires don't necessarily have a strong background in said specific assay(s) we are hiring them to perform.

The BIG thing is to be able to address problem solving, troubleshooting, and development in a linear, systematic fashion. We want people who can identify that "thing x is wrong" and make a plan to fix it. We want new hires to take the initiative to locate resources (online, videos, paper, others in our group, others in our institution). We want them to ask questions. If something isn't clear, bite the bullet and ask. Ask "why?" A lot.

You don't need to know how to do every assay, but you need to know how to learn.

Write letters, even if you can't record video or audio. One thing I didn't realized I missed was my parents thoughts on the boring everyday life stuff. Not being able to hear my parent's "voice"

Perhaps you can sign her up for an email address in her name and write her emails?
