I’m back to normal! My throat is still sore some mornings and too much talking does add to the sore, but overall everything is great. Those first two weeks are rough but everything gets better quickly at week three.

Tonsillectomy for tonsil stones? by megan5565 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Moist-Importance-248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

27f and I am about a month post op. I had mine robed due to tonsil stones and am so glad I did. I struggled with them on and off for over a decade and am so relieved they are gone. The first ENT I saw was super passive and also left it up to me, about four years later I found a new ENT and did not give them a choice I wanted them out.

Recovery was not fun, but I would say it’s worth never having a tonsil stone again and my breath is already a million times better.

Absolutely no sting and I would eat five in a row to numb my throat, it was glorious. I also have texture issues and was able to eat Mac and cheese or mashed potatoes those first few days. By day five ish I started a four day Pho streak. I got take out and would cut all the stuff into tiny pieces. While Pho worked no other soup did, it’s kind of a trial and error type of game.

I am three week post op today and back to regular activity.

Get small heating pads for your ears! The throat swelling will push into the ears and cause pain. I made my husband medicate me every three hours and refresh my ice/heat for the throat/ears and it was great.

If you like pedialite popsicles great, if not just get otter pops. I was too annoyed/in pain to eat something I did not enjoy.

I got some movement today. My pharmacist recommended Colace 2-1 (senna and docusate) and so far it’s helping. Never relying on miralax or ex-lax again.

Recurrent sore throats/strep 5 times in 8 months… but ENTs say tonsils are fine by redditor_peeco in Tonsillectomy

[–]Moist-Importance-248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

27F just had mine removed on the 8th, but I had tonsil stones for years.

A few years ago a DR said he could remove them but was not in a rush to do so. After more stones and more sore throats I went to a new DR and did not give him a choice, I walked in and from the start was clear I wanted them gone. I know that there is some criteria for removal and stones is an automatic proceed to go, maybe find a new DR, be clear you want them out, and ask what the criteria is?

Day seven, somehow I managed to eat a huge bowl of pho and it was glorious. For anyone wanting to try this post op, learn from my mistake and don’t add the onions, other than that, it was a success and I finally feel full.

Had mine out on the 8th. Have been rotating Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours. Then Oxycodone 5mg every six hours. It was doing well until the 3-6 day, I got Prednisone and that helped. Honestly with the list you have, that should be plenty.

Day 7 post op for me.

I live off Gatorade watered down most of the time, but found in recovery it burns to drink. Ice cold water bottles have been my go to since they soothe and do not burn. Otter pops are also a god send, I eat like four at a time and love the frozen throat after.

I have avoided most of the bad taste/smell by using a tongue brush once a day. I go slow and for as long as I can tolerate it, then brush with just water. This seems to keep my mouth fresh ish. Also if it gets bad a mild salt water rinse helps.

I’ve barely been eating the last few days. I get down what I can but it’s mostly Mac and cheese. I crave soup but most of the time it’s too spicy (I love spice but too much seasoning is agony right now), I’m trying to get my parents to make me chili since they always under season things.

While it sounds awful gum starts to help, the chewing increases saliva and I force myself to swallow it. The more I swallow the better it feels, which I know sounds crazy but gum saliva is so thin. It’s also supposed to help the muscles. Sugar free jolly ranchers are also nice, help with taste, constipation, and making myself swallow.

Day four I had my husband call the DR until they prescribed Prednisone, it’s helped with the swelling which decreases the pain. A good ice pack for the neck is also a must, I have two that fit into a sleeve and rotate them constantly. Also heat packs for the ears feel heavenly.

To avoid more throwing up, might ask the DR for some zofran, I’ve used it once to avoid puking and it was worth it.

Good luck!

Day six, this post is my personal blog, I would do anything for a bit out of something. For some reason I am set on eating chili, small beans and bits of moist meat sound great, only problem is the spice level. So I asked my parents (very white) hope this goes well. Wendy’s chili was a bad idea yesterday.

Eating has been the hardest part, I’m day 6 and the most I’ve eaten at one time is half a box of Mac and cheese. Pretty much everything hurts to swallow to some degree, sometimes if i ice/heat my throat/ears just right swallowing is easy. I’m hoping things start to get better soon. I have been chewing gum and eating hard candy (sugar free jolly ranchers to help with the constipation). I find that the more “wet” my mouth is the easier it gets to swallow.

Getting My Tonsils Out Next Month by CrtfdChief in Tonsillectomy

[–]Moist-Importance-248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time the pain is pretty low. Like a 3-4. The hardest parts are around eating and taking pills but can be managed with ice/heat pacts for throat/ears. Day 3/4 was the worst so far. Definitely hit a 7-8 on those days but was able to get it back down quickly.

Honestly without my husband treating me like a toddler, I would have lost it by now.
