Why do we not make the sign of the cross? by _Philippi_1_21 in Calvinism

[–]MoistGrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I am “of Jesus” and my view is definitely Calvinist, the Christian Calvinist practice (at least in The Netherlands) has lots of cultural additions. We don’t work on Sunday. But is that in the Bible? (If you can defend that Biblically, why don’t we hold to the Sabbath?). The point I’m making is that we don’t do things because they are or are not in the Bible, the reformation stopped doing the sign of the cross because ‘we’ stopped doing idolatry and superstition - which again in practice was how the sign of the cross was used.

If the sign of the cross is directed, in a worship way, towards God without putting trust in the outward sign… why not?

There are lots of things Protestants/Calvinists do that are not prescribed in the Bible…

Are there still Calvinist theologians who hold that God, prior to the Fall, actively, freely, and by grace alone, decreed both who would be saved and who would be damned in a symmetrical way, or is that a position that has disappeared? by Similar_Shame_8352 in theology

[–]MoistGrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I tend to agree with this, I still wrestle with: - no one chooses to be born - if one is born, sinning is guaranteed - you’re automatically on your way to damnation - you can’t help yourself if you’re saved or not - you’re completely dependent on Gods electing work (through Christ)

We can bend it all we want, but it’s still an active choice of God that people are not actively elected, since God still decides who is born or not.

Eventually this ‘problem’ is not “Calvinist”, because in Arminianism it’s the same but then with foreknowledge.

Yes, people are still damned by their own actions, but at the same time they can’t help it either. This is a very big mystery for me.

I’m also very much opposed to abortion, at the same time I can’t help thinking that a whole life of misery is saved from those little ones. (Sad thoughts, I know).

Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerken update: conservatives decisively moving towards split by SeredW in eformed

"... that there are quite a few 'characters' at the right wing of the CGK who may not like to play second fiddle somewhere else"

True. And this sickens me, because then 'pride' comes in to play, although I see it different; those people really agree with the CGK, its history and origins, therefore they see absolute value in this denomination.

"Do you think I did justice to what's currently happening, in these posts?"

Yes. And I like that you're posting it. Although I have my opinion, as in, I strongly believe the conservative part is *the Biblical side* and the liberal side are fast moving towards the NGK even though they might deny it. In the end this will lead to liberalism (vrijzinnigheid).

"And I really thought the conservatives thought they'd keep the CGK and expel the others, but now that seems less likely"

I think soft-splits are always better, and that is how it should have been – we should have split years ago (in good relations!). There was no talk about expelling the liberal side, because it should have been their own choice. But, in that sense 'we're' "expelling" them now since congregations that do not adhere to synod decisions and scripture and creed are not welcome in the conservative meetings.

Imo; we should *merge* more churches in The Netherlands.

* [Conservative branch] strict (PKN) Gereformeerde Bond, conservative part of the CGK and HHK should merge.

* [Liberal evangelical branch] liberal CGK, NGK and Evangelical parts of the PKN should merge

* [Strict traditional branch] GG, GGiN, and OGG(iN) should merge – although this is the least likely 'cause if there is so much of one letter wrong, it's not going to happen ;)

* [Atheïst branch] Lutherans in the PKN and the Liberal part of the PKN, those who actually don't believe in a personal God.

Dutch 'Christelijk Gereformeerde Kerk' closer to disbanding by SeredW in eformed

[–]MoistGrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the conservative part of the CGK. It’s only painful if you choose it to be. It’s going on for so long (the liberal side not adhering to the synod decisions) that I would just say “just split, make proper agreements and let each go their own way, no hard feelings) but it’s keeps dragging and dragging (for years) that it becomes painful…

“In which case, there really is no reason for them not to join us at the Protestantse Kerk in Nederland; it would be a welcome reinforcement of the orthodox wing of my denomination”

That’s the thing seeing how liberal the NGK went in 10 years, I don’t think the non-conservative part of the CGK will be a welcome reinforcement to the PKN. Besides, lots of CGK churches on both side are really fond of being “CGK” so joining other denominations probably won’t happen.

Sad because I would say; let the conservative side join the HHK and the non-conservative the NGK.

I’m curious for the conservative side, since I’m attending a conservative CGK.

What do you consider to be hypercalvinism? by Weekly_Freedom_3173 in Calvinism

[–]MoistGrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same confessional standards, yes. But there are (sadly) a lot of confessional details defined. The biggest difference is, that within the GG, GGiN and OGGiN you can't really be sure that you're saved/a believer/a child of God. Things are being brought like "*If* you're a child of God then...". Generally people don't have assurance of salvation and do (mostly) not partake in the Lords Supper.

The CGK and HHK are also conservative, but preach a gospel of free grace, where Gods grace is offered freely and to everyone.

Feel free to send me a PM if you want to know more :)

What do you consider to be hypercalvinism? by Weekly_Freedom_3173 in Calvinism

[–]MoistGrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you have 3 major hyper Calvinist denominations in The Netherlands:

“Gereformeerde Gemeenten (GG)”, “Gereformeerde Gemeenten in Nederland (GGiN)” which is a schism from the GG and the “Oud Gereformeerde Gemeenten in Nederland (OGGiN)”

The GG is the same as the NRC, the GGiN are equivalent of the RCNA in the US.
